really? I was always under the impression that it didn't sell that much.

I still think that Forza 1 had a bigger impact because it came out at a time when Gran Turismo was the only real console driving sim (not really a sim, but whatever) and it both looked and played better than it.  I like both series, but I don't know who would really think that GT has better driving than Forza.  Well, I guess that could be subjective since it depends if you want something closer to real driving or the weird driving style GT formed.

Duckman working overtime. Funny stuff

Anyways i bought an arcade unit this last week as did two coworkers. Doesnt suprise me that Microsoft is doing well now. The 200 dollar Arcade is simply an attractive option.

People love GT because it's pokemon with cars.

Not even kidding, kids buy GT, and it's not because it's a driving sim.

Motorstorm's problem is that it's a racing game. Outside of NFS and MC, arcade racing games are dying. Additional problem: It's on PS3.

Is it just me or does it seem like this gen everything is hyperbole?

I think my favorite time to be a gamer is after the dust settles. This past summer I had so much fun filling out my collection on PS2 because you could find the games cheap and you could talk to people about games and gaming rationally and cooly. I am curious to see how gamers reflect on the 360 and the PS3, but I have somewhat of a hunch it isn't going to be as positive as I sort of feel about it now.

I'm not sure if that's the trend for everything-- ninthings have managed to hold on to memories of the SNES, for example, and the PS2 still enjoys a sort of honeymoon period even in year 9-- but I just don't see our memories being kind. :\

I still love the SNES/Genesis stuff, though the biggest complaint is that most of the games feel too short.

I like SNES/Genesis waaaaaaaaaaaay more than the newer systems.

Given the investment in Burnout, what did it end up selling? I remember something in my head like 1.3 million or something. I don't think it was an incredible success and definitely not at first.

I remember Beetle Adventure Racing!

check out the GTi+ whatever it's called demo on euro PSN.  I thought it was a pretty fun arcade racer and would pick it up if cheap enough.

Dumb admission:

The second game I bought for N64 was Cruisin' USA because the girlfriend and I liked playing it at the bowling alley or wherever. When I got the game home and couldn't immediately go to my favorite course because it was grayed out, I assumed the game was broken and took it back to the store. I wasn't familiar with the concept of having to unlock things, you see.

I'm not sure if that's the trend for everything-- ninthings have managed to hold on to memories of the SNES, for example, and the PS2 still enjoys a sort of honeymoon period even in year 9-- but I am not sure the same will be said for these five or six years.

I know this is being somewhat myopic...

Probably because you read too many internet gaming boards.

I have noticed it too.  Every big release is now a Game of the Forever, complete with 5,000 post threads, creaming over a mediocre looking bullshot.  This might be a jab at GAF but they're not the only ones doing this.  A lot of it has to do with fanboy wars and scarcity.  I remember when DS fanboys were hyping up Hotel Dusk like it was a brilliant classic.  Most people bought it and talked about how fucking amazing it is.  A year or more later and it's largely forgotten and in fact, some people even regretted buying the game.  Still, if you go back and look at those release and pre-release threads, you'd think it was a 10, as opposed to the 4 or 5 that it really was.  Now that the DS is flooded with games better than Hotel Dusk, a lot of them have calmed down.

That was just one example.  This gen has a lot of disposable shit being packaged as premium.  People now have finally accepted yearly sequels, after harsh resistance two gens ago, and some resistance last generation.  Now people eagerly wait for yearly installments of Call of Duty, Rock Band, and Tom Clancy games.  I think that a lot of these games are hollow and soulless, meant just to cash in on their popularity.  As long as online multiplayer seems to work fine, the game itself can be a POS as long as it is fun online.  As a result, you see a lot of shit that people play a ton of and after the first month, nobody plays it.

It is why I'm kind of glad I just got a 360 now.  I'm trailing this gen by 2-3 years but at least I can tell what games were really worth buying or if it was a disposable monthly Game of the Forever.

Instead of pushing something genuinely exciting, they have decided to go with the sterile, competently engineered but ultimately drab, B-grade shit of PGR and Forza.

honest now,
did you play either?

Enough to know that they are boring as shit. Forza is understandably drab; it's a "sim," and "sims" all suck balls since developers/publishers just do not seem to understand the worthlessness of transferring a "racing experience" without doing something to compensate for all that is lost in transition (not to worry, I have plenty of dislike for GT too). PGR exists in some shitpit between arcade and "sim," without ever reaching the highlights of either. I bet Hitler would have been a big fan of PGR.

But that would have been fine, had Microsoft offered some alternative. You know, like RSC.

All the Black Friday deals were much better in favor of Xbox 360 than PS3. NO ONE had good PS3 hardware deals.

Wal-Mart had a Xbox 360 Pro + the two pack-in games + Guitar Hero III w/ Guitar for $199. Who the fuck is going to buy a $400 PS3 with The Happening over that?

But still, how the hell could anyone argue that the XBOX game ethos has fallen further than the PlayStation? XBOX had like 10 good games on it in its lifetime if it's lucky, PS2 was fucking amazing.

PS2 was a shit console with three good game series on it. Xbox was an all-in wunderbox. With RSC on it.

I don't care about sales that much, and this is anecdotal evidence to be sure, but none of my friends were interested in the 360 until it dropped to $199 and they found out you could pick up 20 gig HDDs for $30.  I guess the modular console approach was a smart one.

Totally. It's still a disappointment for those of us who absolutely fell in love with the all-in-one and more is more strategy of the Xbox. Unfortunately, I think that strategy was basically a failed one, and the PS3 would support that.

I don't know anything about possible drawbacks of the format, but would it make sense if they used static memory instead? Considering the capacity of common memory cards, it'd seem like a smart way to go.

I wouldn't mind the network-centric approach if I had more confidence in ISPs. As long as not everything is tied into a network, to the point where playing any game requires an active connection to the mothership.

I'm surprised it's this close since the anecdotal evidence seems to suggest an even bigger gap.  I wonder how much more 360s Microsoft could be selling right now if they had made enough Arcade packs?

PS2 was probably the best machine released.  It had the quality and quantity of titles.  Its a shame that this generation doesn't have a successor.  I suppose you could say 360 but there are some genres that aren't even close to be represented adequately.

It seems to me that the most well-made online games are made by third-parties.  They probably are more concerned with releasing a finished and functional game rather than just milking their cash cow to death.

There is nothing superior about PSN compared to XBL.  There are definitely less people talking but there's still the same ratio of assholes.  An asshole who's willing to talk to himself is more annoying.

:COLOURDOG Quit gaming, take up knitting.

i just get the feeling you play games for 5 seconds and decide on their worth - or not at all and just guess.
and i think saying "enough to know..." is a tacit nod to this fact.

How long did you play? Come on, this is self help, you can only get over these mood swings and outbursts if you take the first step.

Just to note, this ISN'T the first time i've seen people with this affliction - i used to do it a lot when i was young, and i've seen several people do the same thing.

EVILBORE : We are here to help.

Meh, I don't have time to spend on shit boring games. Racing sims and sim/arcade shitpit games, so fucking meh. Sims in particular just totally fail to provide any gaming value: they try to make them "realistic," and completely fuck everything up by assuming that there is no need to compensate for all that is lost when it's translated into video game form. That's why games like Burnout, Wipeout and most recently MotorStorm are such winners, and why sterile shit like Forza and GT suck so much shit.

As for not spending a lot of times on games in general, why should I? There is limited time and plenty of genuinely gripping games out there, why bother with the meh? Besides, there's very seldom any reward for giving meh games more time. I tried that with PGR 1-3, never again. I've played some of PGR4, enough to know that it's the same shit once more.

It seems to me that the most well-made online games are made by third-parties.

That really doesn't make any sense.

I posted a sentence after that explaining why that's so.  Don't know if you saw it.

My favorite online games seem to be sort of obscure (except for CoD which is getting milked pretty hard every single year).  I like games like Rainbow 6 and Grid which most people can't get too into for a long time.  I enjoy it when there's actual depth and a long, rewarding learning curve.  First-parties seem either add gimmicky crap to their sequels or they just copy whatever worked before.  I can't remember any first or second party sequel that actually surprised me (in a good way) when I played it other than Metroid Prime.

sega superstars tennis is kind of neat btw -- it's a depressing reminder of how cool sega used to be, and mascot crossover games are shameful, but it's good fun. might keep it

SST Is pretty awesome. Controls like shit sometimes, and the super moves are a bitch. But god the Segafag in me smiles seing Alex Kidd playing tennis vs Nights in the Samba World

Yeah Sega Tennis is definitely sega fanboy wet dreams come true. Ulala & Gum v. Samba & Nights? :drool

Only thing missing was Ryo and Lan Di playing a game at the docks with tractors driving around :hyper

I wonder if all things being equal, if the PS3 didn't go with Blue-Ray would it have had made a difference anyways? I think this generation would have still played out the same way.

As a new HDTV owner, Blu-Ray only increases the PS3's appeal to me (seeing as the games aren't really doing it)

The 360 had a very convincing launch.
PDZ and Kameo sucked people in (though most of realized we'd been had.) Condemned and CoD2 were also pretty awesome launch titles, then DoA4 a few weeks later.  add Geometry Wars, Hexic, Outpost Kaloki X, Mutant Storm, and Wik Fable of Souls to the roster of interesting XBLA games.  There were some fun retro titles as well--Joust, Smash TV, Gauntlet.  It was a pretty solid launch.

Not sure what is was like on gaf, but in the weeks leading up to the 360 launch, people on CAG were like "lol achievements, XBLA, who needs them?  Early launch?  360 = dreamcast lol."  Then launch day was a complete 180 :lol

PS3 would have already blown 360 out of the water if it didn't have Blu-Ray, Cell, and was therefore competitively priced. Don't kid yourselves. How it fared versus Wii would be another matter.

But Sony had other priorities and sacrificed gaming (willingly or not) to achieve them. Anyway, that alternate reality is all in the land of make believe, so it really doesn't matter.

speaking of which, blu-ray won, but have they done anything with the cell processor?  whatever happened to "your toothbrush will be powered by cell in the future"

The ps3 being 600$ killed it.  Any other arguments are moot.

Meh, I don't have time to spend on shit boring games. Racing sims and sim/arcade shitpit games, so fucking meh.

Okay - so that's clear then. You don't like racing sims - i'm not sure then how you can even begin to comment on Forza being B-grade.

Quote
Sims in particular just totally fail to provide any gaming value: they try to make them "realistic," and completely fuck everything up by assuming that there is no need to compensate for all that is lost when it's translated into video game form.

you need to understand that they don't provide any gaming value -to you-.

Have I claimed to be a UN representative or something? Of course it's based on my opinion of it, who in the hell else would I be talking about? And to me, of course, the game types are by default B and as such do little to add any value to the console, hence they deserved t be mentioned. My bitterness stems from their being three games of largely the same drab type, and not a single game that is even almost like RSC. It's really not that fucking complicated.

you are absolutely more than welcome to not play every game or spend too much time, but you can surely see the trapdoor you stand on when you have a pronounced opinion on something you a) admit you don't like in the first place b) play for a limited time (or AT ALL) c) rate as a B-rate grade.

But I have played them. I've played PGR 1-3 quite a bit, and gave PGR half a shot despite knowing better. Played Forza 1, and Forza 2 is more of the same sort. I really don't understand why it is seemingly so remarkably difficult for you to get why actual playtime in hours with the latest iterations is completely irrelevant in the context of this argument.

Andrews, while you may hate racing sims, you need to understand that there are a fuckton of people out there who really like them.

Er, why is that? Is that somehow going to make the Xbox 360 seem like less of a relative disappointment to me? Which, you know, is sort of the point.
