Just saw the gametrailers review, which isn't that good in itself, but I got a few things

The Ubisoft:
-Automated platforming: game plays itself
-Replaying levels to progress your first play-through
-Nathan Drake turns the Prince into a modern smug all-American soulles guy. No accent, no prince of persia, nothing.
-No challenge in combat either

The Good:
-Looks gorgeous and has great animation

I don't know, the video review basically spelled "It's a great ride, you just don't need a whole lot of skill".

Guess what, i don't play games to test some distinguished mentally-challenged ass skill, i play games for the ride they involve. Who gives a fuck about how skilled i can be?

I get little to no satisfaction out of watching my dude see do cool stuff that I hardly feel like I have any input over myself. It feels disconnected.

No i didn't. I said the trailer was really well put and was better than other videogame trailers. Why you putting shit in my mouth?

And the redeeming qualities? The experience. Yes, it's all make believe to me, like movies, in movies i get to watch, in games i get to control, that's what's appealing to me, but then again, i only became a gamer with the Playstation generation. I like games to be cinematic, i want an adventure, regardless of whether the game requires great skill or not (guess what, i like finishing games that cost me 70 euros, who would've thought).

Heh, how far can you go? Seriously, how far can you go? After all it's just a game pad with some face buttons. The character does what the controller tells him to do.

I guess WrikaWrek is all hard and sweaty over Heavy Rain

As a matter of fact, i think Heavy Rain looks awesome, and i'm a fan of QD.

Sure, make the A.I challenging, but the thought of making the character a complex thing to control is just dumb. You should be able to do complex things with ease, whether you should win a fight easily is another question.

But again, better to be easy than to be hard and not finish it.

I'm not all about challenge. I like plenty of easy games. I didn't say this game would suck or is bad. Just that it sounds kind of differently focused than PoP classic.

As someone who spent dozens of amazingly fun hours with Assassin's Creed (enough to get every single damn thing in the game, including all achievements), I can't wait for some more Ubi Soft "auto" platforming.

Especially since I'm in the middle of tearing through Mirror's Edge and want to break the disc every time I miss a jump if I'm looking two inches in the wrong direction.  I'm slowly becoming an ornery old man who doesn't like to be frustrated, and it seems like Ubi Soft did everything in their power to eliminate most of the frustration common to adventure/platforming games with Prince of Persia.

sure, I can't take that away from you.  I'm of the school of thought that a decent challenge should come first.  that's basically how I value gameplay--how the challenge is balanced with the fun.  Too much challenge kills the fun, not enough challenge also kills it.  I can't pretend to enjoy the Prince's wisecracks and sub-B level story if the game isn't challenging me or fun.

So basically, the first time I saw gameplay and saw the Prince get saved, I knew this game would not be so hot.  I voiced it and of course got eaten alive at gaf, because most people there allow graphics to cloud honest assessments of games before they come out.

Heh, how far can you go? Seriously, how far can you go? After all it's just a game pad with some face buttons. The character does what the controller tells him to do.

As far as I feel like I am playing the game and I have to make effort to pull off stuff. It's more difficult to make fun challenging gameplay that's not overly frustrating cause it requires a lot of time and effort to finetune the gameplay, Ubisoft chose to easy way. It's one of the reasons why the AC gameplay was so boring because there was too much disconnect between what your character is doing and how you had to control him.It was ultimately boring to crawl up a building, compare that to the simple platforming mechanics of Crackdown. Another bad example was relying on the Uncharted animation system to keep you safe from danger when jumping, you could actually see it line up and take over.

Games can still look cinematic and have fun challenging gamplay: look at Halo or Mirror's Edge (or SOTC or ...). I don't like it when a game takes over too much too many times in lieu of 'teh cinematic' and 'teh epic' because more often than not it ends up feeling empty,  cinematic' without substance. The standard example I always use in this case is taking down a scarab with a warthog in Halo 3. There's a ramp and you can do it. It's not forced, you don't have to do it, you can and the game doesn't take over. It's just excellent warthog physics, you have to time it right. Compare that with 'teh epic' scripted events in COD4 where the game pretty much takes over when you do anything more than shoot an enemy.

Most of the jumps I miss are due to not taking my time, but Mirror's Edge should be more organic when jumping while hanging from walls, ledges, poles, or pipes.  That's mainly what I'm referring to.

Oh God, yes.  When you're rushing that much, it's incredibly difficult NOT to screw something up, which is why I've already given up on many of the speed run and time trial achievements, which breaks my heart because I really like replaying fun, short games when I have additional goals to accomplish.

rainbow six vegas was fuck awesome.  it was like uncharted if uncharted was a a lot better game with good mechanics and fun.

Meh, maybe the MP.  The single player spawnfest once you pass invisible checklines made the campaign annoying.  I slogged through the first one, but never even bothered with the 2nd.  Best thing about R6 Vegas was the graphics and the cover button.

Vegas 2 is a lot better, though.

Except the shitty enemy spawn patterns in Terrorist Hunt that pretty much ruined the best mode in the franchise.

The core game was great fun...for a $40 game...much like Left 4 Dead.

RIP Ubisoft.  When you were young and full of imagination I loved you, and then you became a sell-out poser whore of an empty shell.  :(

RIP:
Beyond Good & Evil
Splinter Cell
Prince of Persia Sands of Time
Rainbow Six 3
XIII
Rayman

Actually looking back, Ubisoft was never really that great.  I think nostalgia somehow made them seem like a more artsy and exciting company than they ever were.

XIII, BG+E, and Sands of Time gave that impression.  and when all 3 failed it was like "oh poor creative company, see what happens when people only buy Madden? woe is us."
they also released all those pretty awesome games (well, XIII was only half awesome but still not bad) damn near simultaniously, and got really surprised when they all failed to sell, not only competing against themselves but against every other holiday blockbuster that year.  That was stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid.

I do give them credit for branching out a bit this gen.  And I really like seeing them publish stuff they don't make (No More Heroes, Tenchu 4, Wartech), which isn't always great, but hey, they're taking chances, I like that.  And gol-dern it, I still like Splinter Cell, they haven't fucked that series completely yet, so I hold out hope for them.

depends on the game, sometimes i like to go along for the ride

the half-life games are pretty good at balancing challenge with roller coaster moments
