King's Bounty: The Legend (PC) - $10 this weekend
« on: December 02, 2008, 10:15:24 PM »
Just finished a run of this game on hard difficulty, took me about two solid weeks of play to get through (I pretty much cleared everything and did every quest) and had a fantastic time with it. It's no shocker that I fell hard for this game-I loved Space Rangers 2, the team's last work-and adore the HoMM series and its allies.

I just want to say, though, it was SO nice to play a strategy game where the game properly scaled up the encounters as you go to compensate for the player's growing familiarity with the game's mechanics and statistics. Every time I felt I was preparing tactics and combos that I thought might be "absuing the game" , the game comes back with megastacks of enemies so nasty that it was necessary to use them. As the kind of guy who uses spreadsheets with strategy games from time to time, it was awesome to see a game that wouldn't just collapse under its own formulae four hours in like most I play do. The pacing was perfect as well, and the game always gave you plenty of interesting monsters and spells with which to mix and match your army.

Honestly, the one thing that I wish the game had done a little bit more for was itemization. Even this was pretty robust, but had they really blown the doors off for more customizable via keeper battles and a large number of items with more varied stats, it would have given the player even more interesting army/spell combos to play with.

Another thing that hit me as I played was how polished the game felt. Normally playing Eastern European titles always has some things that drag down the experience-evil islands style voice acting, crash bugs, inexplicably choppy framerates on beefy hardware. KB really didn't suffer from any of this and the game looked pleasant and ran great (without being at all demanding). Instead of voice acting 1c instead got some compentent translators and the game was MUCH better off for it. The music was also good all the way through and never really came across as repetitive or tiresome.

Definitely one of the stronger strategy game releases this year, if not the strongest, right up there with Europa Universalis III: In Nomine and Sins of a Solar Empire. If you want something besides evilbore and porno to keep your attention at your PC this holiday season, you really can't go wrong with King's Bounty.

Excellent review, you are one of the best posters in regards to PC gaming.  I need to get back to this game.  I started out as a warrior and decided to reroll as a mage and stopped a bit after I killed

I played through as a mage, but avoided the sort of cheesiness tactics that clearly were at my disposal by choosing that class. When the expansion comes out, I'm going to play through it on Impossible, and hopefully the game will proceed to do everything in its power to beat me senseless. Even on Hard, I felt from time to time that the game was holding back just enough to entice another play through on Impossible (where the stacks are 70% bigger than normal, and experience is cut 70% accordingly).

Also, YAY FOR RANDOMIZATION. Yeah it can screw with you if you planned out "X L33T TICTACS" for your character with certain item/spell/creature combos, but it's fuck awesome for rewarding players for adaptation.

i dunno if it's "that good" for everybody, but something about it resonated with me. i'd explain, but i am fucking lazy tonight. i think it works better as a console game, by the by, even if the pc version looks and performs better.

eh your tastes and mine generally run on the same harmonics. I'll give it a go as soon as this defrag gets done, if it doesn't hit me I've got the new NWN2 expansion in tow anyway.

$10 on Gamersgate, no client BS required just pay and download. Awesome game, ignore that "backlog" if you have it and play this instead since it's better.

Will give it a shot for $10.  Always enjoy some different genre.

First time using Gamersgate here, how is Universe at War?  It's only $5 right now.

^ I have a similar question. I've watched some videos, but I can't figure out if there is real-time exploration in the overworld, and then random encounters? How does it work.

I realize the battles are turnbased, but alot of the videos showed your character on horseback riding around in real-time.

Worth noting that if you're in the US expect some download time.  Might just be the site getting hammered because of the deal, but it's only going 60-150k/s for me which is between 4-8 hours remaining.

-Turn-based hex combat
-Real time overworld
-Enemies appear on the overworld and will chase you if you get close to them
-Main hero levels up
-Gold is used to buy more troops [both humans and animals]
-Lots of main quests and side quests to get loot, gold, and experience

A lot of people report that it makes their laptop fans go bananas. Probably some sort of wack CPU or GPU usage.

It's probably my favorite game of the last couple of years. It's awesome right from the start and only gets better as you get further into the game-I LOVE the way that the developers encourage you to bust out crazy combos and break the rules, but in turn try to break YOU in turn by putting you up against some really hard encounters.
