Will the next gen systems all use...blu-ray?

Pushing Blu-ray will prove to be a dumb move for Sony, I'm thinking.

Assuming Digital Distribution will catch on and systems have one sku with big ass hard drives, I'd say multiple DVDs and full installs would be cheaper.  Consoles slowly assimilate the good and bad of PC gaming.

btw, this would probably be in 2012 or something and we'd either be poor/dead or somehow super rich thanks to St. Jesus Obama and internet is fios standard.

I don't think Digital Distribution will catch on as long as the majority of people have really slow internet connections (which they do).

yeah, we'll need better internet access in the U.S. Digital distribution seems more like a gen-after-next thing (of course, it'll gradually grow, as size limitation barriers are broken.) 

I think I agree that multi-DVD and installs will be the way they go. MS and Nintendo probably won't want to fund Sony...though if blu-ray gets big enough, they may go for it.

If they don't, I imagine it's some reason other than there being a more expedient delivery method. But we'll know based on when the next round launches.

A lot can happen in a couple of years.  It might be possible for the public to move past disc media entirely but its a gamble.  I could definitely see DVD still being used (it will still be common in 2011-2013) but with a 1/2 TB HDD out of the box, with multi-terabyte storage options available at launch for heavy DD buyers.

It will be interesting to see how launches first.  I don't see anyone going super early like the 360 since Nintendo will ride the Wii for as long as they can, the 360 is pretty much the success as far as traditional gaming consoles go, and Sony...Sony is so arrogant to do something like that.  If anything, I see Sony releasing the PSP2 and having that as they main device for a while.  I don't think it's so far fetched if it it's somewhere between the PS2/PS3, is designed to also be used on the TV from the get go, and has online integration all at the start.

actually typing that out made me realize that the next gaming device I'm looking forward to most is the PSP2

I don't know whether this makes it likely, but if the next Xbox doesn't use a bigger format than DVD, I think people are going to be immediately down on it. I don't think it makes a big difference myself, but I can see there being a backlash.
