Mirror's Edge DLC announced
« on: December 04, 2008, 07:13:46 AM »
Pure Time Trial Pack: 7 maps for 10$ sold!
Release date: January 2009
Video: http://www.gamersyde.com/news_7382_en.html :drool
Very different from the main game, yet still similar. Very cool! Such a cool esthetic! Also frees them from making a map that makes sense in real world to just completely focus on platforming.
Obligatory :bow swedes :bow2

I bet the names of the maps also refer to how they play: "flow", "velocity", "reflex", etc

I hope this sees release on both 360 and PS3 (unlike most DLC these days).  Mirror's Edge is one of the few multiplatform games this holiday that I picked up on the triple simply because I couldn't stand the 360 pad for this game (the shoulder buttons/triggers are like the anti-Mirror's Edge).

Oh geez, I hope this sees release on both 360 and PS3.
It will. This isn't the PS3 exclusive DLC and from some googling it seems Mirror's Edge DLC isn't PS3 exclusive anymore.

My concern was actually that it would be 360 exclusive, as that seems to be the norm these days.  Then again, if it is included with the PC version (maybe?) I will just rebuy the game on that platform so that I may experience these visuals at 60 fps/1080p (unless they fail to optimize it like some other recent PC ports).  Of course, then I'll need to use a wired Dual Shock 2 instead of my 360 pad (hopefully it is fully supported).

I've been hanging around too many AV forums.  If you really want to see what picky is, visit AVS...

Hell, since I'm talking about CONTROLS here, you should consider arcade stick builders and how anal THEY are in regards to their controls.  I don't see the problem.

Many people are very picky about different aspects of their hobbies and there's really nothing wrong with that.

Official PR, doesn't seem like the DLC will be included in the PC version.

Guildford, UK. – Dec 4, 2008 – Leave the city behind! DICE, an Electronic Arts Inc. studio (NASDAQ: ERTS), today announced that the highly acclaimed first-person action adventure title, Mirror’s Edge™ will release downloadable content (DLC) for the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system, the Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system and the PC in late January. DICE also confirmed today that the PC version of the game will ship to retailers in North America on January 13th and worldwide on January 16th, 2009.

Players will be challenged to achieve the fastest times possible on nine races across seven all-new and totally redesigned Time Trial maps. No guns, no cops, and no city: this is true aesthetics, agility and flow that will challenge any runner. This special DLC pack will be available for $10 USD or 800 Microsoft points. As an added bonus, all PLAYSTATION 3 Mirror’s Edge fans will be able to download an additional map for free.

“The freedom of movement and control in first person has been the most popular aspect of Mirror’s Edge so we decided to distil these down to their purest form for this map pack,” says Owen O’Brien, Senior Producer, DICE. “We deliberately chose a more abstract aesthetic that is still within our distinctive art style and then focused on flow and gameplay to create an experience and challenge very different from the main game.” Time Trial is a popular mode in Mirror’s Edge that challenges players to find the fastest route across various maps. Players can upload their best time to the Mirror’s Edge leaderboards for their friends to download and compete against. Players can see their friend’s ‘ghost’ run as they race their way through the course to the top of the leaderboards.

Mirror’s Edge was awarded “Best Xbox 360 Game” at the recent GC Developers Conference in Leipzig, Germany. It also received the “Best Action Game” of Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) by IGN and the Game Critics Award for “Best Original Game” at E3 in July. Mirror’s Edge delivers players straight into the shoes of Faith, a modern day heroine who traverses the vertigo-inducing cityscape, engaging in intense combat, fast-paced chases and challenging puzzles. With a never-before-seen sense of movement and perspective, players are drawn into Faith’s dangerous world.

These should've been included on the disc.  If it's anything like the time trials on the disc, this is something like 10-20 minutes of actual new content that you'll just be repeating over and over until you nail the perfect line.  And don't compare it to a racing game where you have the infinite variability of different cars and different opponents.

I really do like the style, but I'm frustrated enough trying to pass the time trials included on the disc without hitting up FAQs/YouTube, so I'll probably pass...unless  there are achievement points  :D

People really need to stop looking at content in general amount of content created. They could probably create a level where you're just running for hours and hours, along new buildings but that's not fun. I bet a lot of time goes into creating and finetuning, balancing those maps so they're fun and have good flow. That's where the bulk of work goes into with this stuff.Work that you don't see visually or in a single playthrough, but in the gameplay and replayability.

There won't be achievements. What would they give you achievements for? It's for the time trial enthusiasts and that's it. There hasn't been a single EA game that got the achievement increase either, afaik.

There are 250 points for DLC.  Why not use them to further entice people to pick it up?  It might work on me.

I know EA added achievements to The Godfather, although I don't know if that was just to round it up to a full 1000 or go over.  Also, Mass Effect had 50 points added and that's technically an EA property now.

But this is much different than a track pack or a map pack.  There's generally one best line to take through the level and once you nail it, there's no reason to return to it.  That's much different than multiplayer maps or tracks that you can play over and over and over.

This feels like content that was originally going to be included on the disc, does it not?

If you can nail those lines perfect every time in ME, then you're a god. Don't think I've ever even nailed something perfectly in ME, always a slight hickup.
Could be that this content would have been included in the disc, but what you gonna do? I feel like I got more than my 40euros out of the game and I love it a great deal so I'll probably get that pack and support Mirror's Edge.
I hardly play multiplayer shooters cause they're not my kind of thing. Never payed for a mp map pack.

It is possible to enjoy all three platforms, you know.  I have divided things up pretty evenly based on the quality of each port.

Of the multiplatform releases this fall, I picked up Pure, Saint's Row 2, Sonic Unleashed, Prince of Persia (just bought, haven't played yet), and Tomb Raider Underworld (Christmas gift) all on the 360.  Furthermore, I went ahead and picked up Brothers in Arms HH for the 360 from Amazon for $18 (don't have it yet).

I also decided on the superior PC versions of Far Cry 2 and Fallout 3.  Then, on the triple, I picked up Mirror's Edge, Dead Space, and Silent Hill.

The PS3 ports of those games were all very solid.  Had Dead Space and Mirror's Edge been available for the PC day and date with the other two versions, however, I would have purchased those versions instead.  Silent Hill is virtually the same on both platforms as are Dead Space and Mirror's Edge.

I considered Prince of Persia and Tomb Raider for the PC as well, but Assassin's Creed had odd performance on the PC and Tomb Raider was missing a lot of the special effects used in the 360 version (though it did run at 60 fps on the PC).

As you can see, the 360 gets the majority of my playtime and purchases, though the PC is actually my preferred platform.  Gamertag is dark1x if you don't believe me.  Go ahead and check for yourself (yes, I'm picky as hell)...

I actually use it quite a bit and continue to have absolutely no problems.  It almost doesn't seem possible, all things considered, but it's working beautifully.

Hey dark10x, the PC version has an official release date now: 16 January.
Heh, I love this game so much I probably WILL rebuy it.  :P

The game will likely retail for $50 and, if it includes the additional content, I won't have to buy that either.  I certainly hope it is well optimized, however.  UE3 ports are really hit or miss on the PC with some ports running beautifully while others have framerate and loading issues (I still can't believe that Turok actually had loading screens added to the PC version while the console version supported streaming).

With the PhysX additions, it does seem as if they are actually putting effort into the PC release (plus, DICE has a history on the PC).

Seems like a waste to me personally.
What seems like a waste?

Mirror's Edge is the kind of game that I could play over and over again.  I find myself playing it much like I do older games like Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in that there is always room for improvement and simply playing the game is a joy.  It becomes so much more fun the more you play it.  I would love to play the game at 60 fps with superior image quality, however, as it just screams for a high framerate and smooth lines.
