If BioWare and Bethseda Teamed Up, I Would Never Get Laid Again
« on: December 04, 2008, 09:35:46 AM »
Fallout 3 play time yesterday: 11 AM - 1:20 PM, 6:00 PM - 3:00 AM

Total play time: 11 hours, 20 minutes. In a 24 hour period. I still managed to go to class and eat dinner too.

Last time I played a game this hardcore, it was Mass Effect. I reached a ten hour day with Mass Effect. Before that, I remember regularly playing Oblivion from the moment I woke up to the moment I went to bed on a regular basis during summer '06 (the first real summer I had an HD monitor)

So, if BioWare and Bethseda teamed up, my life as a social person would be over. It would just end. At one point last night I was seriously considering turning my cell phone off.

Too bad I can't do this tonight. I have a paper to type. The funny thing is, I still haven't beat Oblivion. Oh shit.

same here lol

:bory2

no, but this would be horrible.  Bethesda and Bioware make very different games despite both falling into the same wrpg niche.  Although, Bioware can learn a lot from Bethesda about how to design side missions that aren't complete garbage.

I didn't mean to type niche, I meant subgenre, I swear!

I was just writing a paper for the past 2 hours where I used Niche so much because it was about Print Journalism that it's instinctive

Hey, fuck what other people think. It's what I think that counts.

And I think that I may not get my paper done tonight because of Fallout 3.

Only if you ignore 95% of all conversations/cutscenes in JRPGs (and I like JRPGs)

I just don't understand this.  And I fucking LOVED FFX.

What made FFX-2 so appealing to some people?  Did I seriously miss something?

I still haven't played FFX-2.  The game system and non-linear structure sound appealing and I don't mind the theme (as long as I can play it with nobody around  :-[ ) but what puts me off it is people say it's crazy unbalanced much like FF7/8.  What good are cool battle and growth systems if you don't have to use them?

... yeah, I don't quite get why you'd respond to a post about balance concerns with a list of points none of which address balance.

... yeah, I don't quite get why you'd respond to a post about balance concerns with a list of points none of which address balance.

The game is pretty balanced. Just don't use catnip + trigger happy. Also, the counter this balance, there's a cool feature called Oversoul. When you kill a specific number of enemies of one type on the field, the next one you fight is an overgrown, overpowered version of that type. So let's say you killed like 10 bombs in some area, the next time you fight one, you'll fight a suped up, mega Bomb that's way more powerful. Now, if you oversoul *bosses* the game difficulty ramps up tremendously, especially in Via Infinito, the 100 level dungeons (was it 100 levels? I forgot).

Also, locations have different difficulty ranking. So if you want a challenge go to a mid or high level place instead of one that's low difficulty.

It's pretty great game design and it pains me no other jrpg has taken note of what FFX-2 did.

It'd be interesting to see an RPG with BioWare's character interaction, dialogue, and voice acting and Bethesda's gameplay and world-building.

1) It's totally non-linear. I mean there is a set path of missions you have to do in order but other than that EVERY SINGLE AREA known from FFX is open to you after about 1 hour of gameplay.
2) It's totally embarrassing think the laughing scene from FFX repeated 100 times over and almost in every cutscene.
3) It has the best combat system from ALL FF games. Better than 7s, better than 10s. It's a mixture of classic job system (White Mage! Black Mage! Thief! Warrior! Blue Gun Mage!) with the ability to instantly change a job in a battle (like switching characters in FFX)...
4) ...but the system has flaws: no summons and no limit breaks :'(
5) There are also Garment Grids which have pretty amazing features like for example allowing you to cast ALL Black Magic as a White Mage (so you have ALL WM spells and ALL BM spells in your arsenal) etc.
6) It has about 1 000 000 of minigames where you can win some uber, only one of a kind items in the game like +100% HP and +100% MP accessory.
7) It has a 100 Level Deep hidden dungeon with a final boss that has 999 999 HP.
8) As a whole the game is pretty much a big fanservice to FFX fans, much like FF9 was for old FF games fans.
9) You can beat it in 20-30 hours or in 150-200 hours. It's up to you.

Didn't realise you like it that much, man, but all that pretty much hits the nail on the head as to why FFX-2 is fucking amazing.

if bioware and bethesda teamed up they'd make a 10,000 hour game consisting entirely of semiprocedurally generated tedium. and then they'd charge you for horse armor
