Gamespot Review: WoW: WotlK
« on: December 04, 2008, 04:01:36 PM »
Can someone explain to me the complaint: No content for new players. New players have never played the game, so how would they know what content is new? Additionally at 11 million subscribers or whatever, how many 'new players' are there. I mean it got a good review, but if youre gonna nag it for stuff say stuff like 'new Death Knight class is OP'

Interesting that he didn't include any screenshots from any dungeon higher than Azol. A Dungeon you can do immediately at 70...

Yes, but you aren't a new PLAYER. Plus the games been streamlined so even new players will progress to 70 that much faster. Wtf review guy.

Mounts at 30 makes it a lot easier to explore the world too.

Why do they even need to review WotLK? They probably just gave it to the new guy with a note that said "Give this at least a 9", and he just read some stuff off the box and Wikipedia and wrote the review while playing Fallout 3 or Prince of Persia or something.

Though it's obvious to us, pointing out that there's nothing for players who are brand new to game is a valid point. He's just letting them know there's no point in picking up this expansion until you're at least level 55.

How is it a vailid point? If they are new players, then its ALL new to them.

Im arguing that its a stupid point to make in a review and an editor should catch it. What he COULD have said is there isnt any new content for someone who is re-rolling, but what does that mean when Blizzard spends major amounts of time making the level 1-70 process even faster.

The flattened leveling curve that Blizzard maintains for new players as expansion content is released is a huge deal for people new to the game, not to mention all the class, quest, encounter,  and talent changes that also occur.

Yes, all of that is available via the base patch process, but it is enabled in full by expansion availability.

ultimately, it's a useless observation, since this is an EXPANSION PACK TARGETING EXISTING PLAYERS. you can't play wrath of the lich king without installing the original wow!

What new player will start their time sucking WoW quest and think "I wish there was more content". There's assloads of shit to do and they don't have any experience to base anything on.

What if I'm a new WoW player and I see WotLK and think to myself "I should buy that new expansion"?

I'm pretty happy that Justin Calvert from GameSpot is looking out for poor little me.

REQUIRES ORIGINAL WORLD OF WARCRAFT TO PLAY

i dunno. what if in jon calvert's next review of valkyria chronicles, he informs the reader that it doesn't support 2009 NFL draft picks. as a football fan, i'm thankful for his help!

I can see the complaint perfectly, although it should be phrased differently.  Somthing like "not worth it for brand new players" would be better.

more like "need to be level 70 to appreciate the mass of new content" which is also a DUH for an MMO expansion

yeah, but how many of those idiots read gamespot for their timely reviews? might as well add other gems like "requires a keyboard and mouse" or "must be able to read at a 6th grade level" if the bar is set that low

it was a dumb attempt to shoehorn another negative in there. given that there's plenty of negatives to focus on, it just underscored the complete lack of effort calvert put into properly evaluating wotlk.

Frag is correct that there's a lot of updates (UI changes, talent/spells/class balance, itemization) that is available to lower level people without the expansion, plus the overall flattened levelling curve. still, I mean, uh, WoW has plenty of content for people who have never played it before. the expansion doesn't need to cater to them :P
