LTTP: The Shawshank Redemption
« on: December 08, 2008, 12:18:27 AM »

What a marvelous film. It's a shame I hadn't seen it until just now. One of the most satisfying denouements I've ever been treated to in a film. I can see why IMDB's users have it ranked as the number one film of all time (doesn't make them any less insane, however). I can't say I've seen a single film quite like it. Truly an example of film as art (most movies these days have me forgetting that motion pictures were ever considered art).

And not to derail my own thread, but I also just recently saw Citizen Kane, which was, to my absolute surprise, an unbelievably superb film as well.

I meant to ask, how are Darabont's other films? I'm a fan of Jim Carrey, so I'll probably end up watching The Majestic, but how's The Green Mile? The Mist?

The Majestic sucks.  The Green Mile is a good film.  The Mist is one of the best Grade-B films made in the past decade.

Those are all really different movies but people are usually pretty polarized on them from what I've seen.  I'd recommend watching The Green Mile first to see how you like that.

The Majestic is not the best "dramatic" Jim Carey movie imo but I think I remember liking it at the time (it was like 5 years ago when it came out?).  I think the Truman Show was more well made though.

The Majestic is not good, The Green Mile is Oscar bait-ish but decent, The Mist kicks arse and hates people in general.

I disagree, I think it's enjoyable if only seeing the cool way he evolves the prison and the inter workings there.

I'm gonna watch it again when I get my blu-ray in the mail, hopefully tomorrow.

Saw this movie a year ago. Like Oz, it's pretty damn depressing (yes, I know it's obvious). I can understand why people like it, but not really one of my favs. Though I have to say it has some great dialogue and I likes the happy ending. :)

The only part that really saddened me was

when Brooks gets out and ends up being so confused and dysfunctional in a world that has grown without him and can only respond with suicide. It's kind of interesting that early prison movies (The Big House and Thunderbolt) present the fellow prisoners as evil, then in the 70's there is a rash of prison movies that represent the Warden as the source of evil. Could just be following the formula set forth by Cool Hand Luke ... or it could be a response to the Nixon administration.

The evil warden's a cliche because it's so natural: cast the most powerful person as the villain to set up the biggest struggle for the protagonist.

You don't really see it crop up until the 60's/70's, when there was a much more anti-establishment slant in films generally and they didn't have to worry about the Code.  But even before then there were many evil movie jailers.  They were just written as Nazis or Japanese.

TA managed to put together a good list without even dipping into Roger Corman.

I love this movie, and hate those who say it sucks because it's a "Count of Monte Cresto" rip-off or those stupid conspiracy theorists who went to say that it's "the Israeli/Palestinian conflict retold from a person who believes in the development and protection of a Jewish nation point of view". It was so farfetched and incredibly distinguished mentally-challenged that it killed a couple of thousand brain-cells. :duh
there's a reason most conspiracy theories in fact are barely veiled racism, and most conspiracy theorists are made of pure stupid.

Quote from: Fast Blacks
Every so often, Andy would show up with fresh bruises. The Sisters kept at him - sometimes he was able to fight 'em off, sometimes not.
So what happens when he can't fight them off?  That sounds pretty clear to me.
