Real talk: oven popcorn>>>>>>>>>microwave popcorn
« on: December 15, 2008, 04:37:25 PM »
:bow

Pour it in a heated pan (with olive oil) and cook it until it's ready, then dump it into a big bowl. Melt some I Can't Believe It's Not Butter in the microwave and pour it over the popcorn. Salt it to your taste (not too much for me), shake the bowl around

and BAM

you've just outwitted Orville :bow

PD, right as usual.  Unfortunately I have been avoiding popcorn due to my recent dentistry.

My microwave protest is ongoing, I do break down sometimes and heat canned soup in it but I mostly still use the top/oven. I can't believe how different things like chicken taste when you defrost it in the microwave (as opposed to using cold water, or defrosting in the fridge). The microwave makes it all gummy and the texture is rubbery. I would imagine the same thing for corn (where natural heat would make it light and fluffy, the microwave gives it more of a rubbery texture).

movie theater popcorn is overrated.  I never buy it myself, but my friends always do and they drench that shit in butter.  It's kind of nasty.

and ot, but I just watched 2 big women on the verge of passing out eat a lasagnia sandwhich between two loafs of garlic butter bread.  I honestly don't see how Paula Deen manages to live eating that type of stuff.

Hot air popper > all.  $20 appliance that does it all for you!

I disagree, Triumph.  A hot air popper is better than the microwave, but the stove still wins.  You need the right amount of oil.  That is stove magic.

Whatever, mang.  Stove is too much effort generally speaking.  Although I will say that the last couple times I've made microwave popcorn it's been more burnt than the stove popcorn I used to make before I acquired the mighty air popper.

you're lazier than i thought!

Cooking it on the oven takes little effort. Sure you have to watch the pan to make sure you don't burn stuff, but that's no deal breaker. I can pop a huge bowl and butter/salt it in less than 10min.

That chemical they put on microwave popcorn is toxic. I will never eat that shit.

There were a bunch of ConAgra workers near me that had lung diseases because they worked around that crap all day.

Most people have never had real popcorn, it's a dying art.  Growing up, my dad had a pot dedicated to popcorn making.  The key is getting the oil the right temp, heat your oil with 3 or 4 kernels in the oil and turn the heat up slowly until they pop.  Then throw in the rest of your kernels and enjoy popcorn for the first time.

The movie theaters used to serve good popcorn, but they switched their oil and most of it tastes like shit too.  But, compared to the cardboard nastiness of your average microwave popcorn, it tastes fantastic.

Both pale to DIY popcorn on the stove.

Olive Oil is hard to get hot enough. Use peanut oil, it also gives the pop corn a great crunch

I worked at a theater, and the stuff they use at Regal is GOLDEN FLAVORED BUTTERY TOPPING. No real butter to be found! Just coconut oil and crap.

And still, people would buy the 7 dollar refillable bucket o'corn and demand MORE BUTTERY TOPPING. Oh, and then they'd come back for more, all while looking like they were one step away from being confined to a Rascal.

Also, the health problems those microwavable popcorn workers were experiencing? http://www.butterflavoringlunginjury.com/  BUTTERLUNG.

Forgot to add, hot air poppers suck too.

But, they are better than microwave popcorn.

Someone who's never had stove oil popcorn just wouldn't understand.  The quality can't be matched.
