My back aches thread of poor posture
« on: December 15, 2008, 11:27:28 PM »
I slouched at my desk in school. I think it has caught up with me. All my time spent in front of a computer is catching up with me I feel.

Chiropractors always seemed like a quack to me, but I'm feeling more and more like going to see one for fear of some long term damage I may face. I'm a side sleeper to boot, so I use a body pillow but I constantly find myself in the fetal position and try to consciously straighten myself out at night. I also have to carry a kid or 2 to bed nightly. 50+ pounds of dead weight is getting more bothersome to do daily. :-\

Anyone here see a chiropractor?

I used to go to a chiropractor and it helped out a great deal.

I have nothing going in like that, although I have strained my lower back a couple of times in the past couple of months working out. Standing up straight was a real pain... literally. Fortunately, that would only last a day, and then it would just be stiff another day or so, and it would be all good. The second time (which was last week), I distinctly felt it gave way and immediately knew I was screwed. Finished my workout, though. The pain would set in later.

Read a book and figure out how to deadlift, then go do it.

Despite what modern daytime TV infomercial slug culture may have you believe, your posture is not going to improve by lying on your ass and having some dude massage it or stick pins in it or whatever. You actually have to strengthen the muscles involved by using them the way they were meant to be used, i.e. by lifting heavy things in an anatomically correct manner. As your back strengthens, you can tolerate awkward positions and heavier loads better, as your back muscles will keep your spine in the proper position.

And you will come to ENJOY lifting your kids and throwing them around, trust me on this one  :D
