I've been a member of the cult of Trader Joe's for years now. I used to rent a place that was a couple blocks from one, it was awesome.

My house is a couple blocks from a Whole Foods. While awesome, it's just not as cool. Now, the nearest Trader Joe's is about a mile away.

And yeah, Trader Joe's rules. They're owned by the same corporation as Aldi's, but their food isn't dumpster-quality like Aldi's. Though incidentally, TJ's is great for dumpster diving.

Trader Joes is hot. Maybe it's different in other places, but the two locations I've shopped at have had a bit of a loft atmosphere, as opposed to the yuppie smog of Whole Foods.

I ate a York peppermint patty sometime in elementary school. I didn't like the taste, but I forced myself to finish it anyway. My stomach felt like shit for the rest of the day. Ever since then I feel nauseous just from smelling any combination of mint and chocolate.

TJ's is awesome, I always shop at the Lake Grove location. Great snack foods, and marinades/sauces. Also occasionally has some cute granola-girl types working the cash registers too.

There's a Trader Joe's close-ish to where I work, but unfortunately I take the metro so it sorta prevents me from doing any shopping there. There's a Giant closer to my apartment, so that's where the majority of groceries are bought.

TJ's is pretty cool, good prices! Can't always find exactly what I want though. Whole Foods is just...super expensive. Neat, but you can't always find what you want either (unless it's super organic super expensive).

Yeah this, NY pizza is gross. I'm a fan of the exotic ingredients and better balanced crust of the California-style pizza (though I am NOT a fan of it in chain places like CPK, waaayyy to greasy).

Never had California pizza aside from CPK though, which I'm not a fan of. I'd have to take a look into it. Best pizza I've ever had was a small place near the Throgs Neck in Whitestone, crust was crispy and thin as hell. But I'll never forget the first time I had pizza in Buffalo and almost vomited, while all the kids up there were talking about how amazing it was.

go threre right before close if you can-usually at that time the hipster crunchy granola types are tending to their litter of kids and you can navigate the aisle with some degree of peace. Dunno about the asian folks there, maybe they are home too putting grandma to bed by then.

question for NY pizza fans-

what happens when you want more than one or two toppings on a pizza in reasonable amounts? the pizza style is designed for thin sliced meat and that's about it, it's just not versatile for interesting ingredient combos or vegetable toppings in anything more than the most trivial amounts.

That was the plan before Dentalgeddon 08. I'll reassess my situation come the middle of next year, by which point I am expecting the preventative dental work to be complete. I may have to make concessions on account of school (since I started school on the east side, it might be in my best interest to continue there for now), but believe me, there's nothing I'd like more than to move back into the city.

Well, it may just be this particular one for some strange reason, but on average I've found a lot of their products it to be surprisingly more expensive than say Ralph's.

Their meat and produce isn't any more expensive either, when it is compared with similar products in normal stores (free range vs. free range, grass fed vs. grass fed).

Where they get slightly up there is with their prepacked and frozen stuff.

It's a good supplement store. When my wife and I go grocery shopping on Sundays, we visit four stores to get everything: Safeway, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's and the local fruit stand. Luckily they're all within a mile of each other.

and after years upon years of eating Chicago-style thick crust pizza from Lou Malnati's, I'm now a fan of thin crust and NYC style pizza. Thick crust just gets old.

The cool thing about Trader Joe's is that you can tell them to stock certain foods. They had those at my north chicago suburb store, but not in madison, wi. I bothered them enough and got them up here!
