HDTV LCD Users?
« on: December 17, 2008, 11:03:02 AM »
So I'm going to be picking up a new TV soon.  Upgrading from a Sammy DLP I can't stand.  Budget is about $1500.  That's B&M.  I'm not dealing with stuck pixels via freight companies.  I'm definitely getting LCD.  I would've liked Plasma, but I use my TV far too much as a PC monitor, and don't want to worry about leaving it on and dealing with IR or burn-in.

So what's the scoop on good LCDs?  I'll probably go 42" or 46".  I know the general rule is stick with Sharp, Sony, Samsung.  Is 120 Hz worth it?  I'll be using the TV for mostly gaming and Bluray.  Seems like there are some complaints about it causing lag and judder.  Do the Bravia, XBR, and Aquous branding matter?  Some Sharps and Sonys don't carry that branding, just generic LCD.

Why can't they be clearer with these fucking model numbers?  It's beyond distinguished mentally-challenged.  I always feel like I may accidentally buy the step-down model on accident b/c I wrote something down wrong.

Thanks for any help.

As far as i know, Samsung LCDs don't have branding, it's just series 6, 7, 8 and so on.

I got a 40" Sammy 1080p earlier this year. I'm not even sure they make this model anymore since they're always changing things, but I'm happy with it. Haven't used it for gaming much, but I haven't had any issues with it on the few games I have played. This may be true for all HDTVs, I don't know, but 480i looks like junk, 480P is pretty good, 720p+ is  :hyper

I have a Samsung A650. I think games and Blu Rays look absolutely amazing on it. I only play HD games on it.

Automotion/120mhz is garbage. I never use it.

Thanks for the responses.  I'm getting an idea on the model numbers.  Damn I really want to get plasma, but my habits would probably burn it in.  I just spend too much time using it as a PC monitor after work.  Then I fall asleep. :(

Seems that way from my experiences too.  So I don't know what to do about my older gaming consoles (and the Wii, lolz Wii).  Stuff looks like shit through my monitor's component input, and not everything I have is component anyway.  So my options are to either buy a cheaper, smaller-sized HDTV or see about getting an SDTV.  The one I can get for free is a 20 inch WEGA with S-video.  This would be for the PS2, Wii, Game Cube, Dreamcast, Neo-Geo, Saturn, and SNES.  What say you guys?

My PS2 is a jaggy mess on my HDTV over component, but it's better than PS2 over composite. I can grow accustomed to it, at least. And DVDs on the PS2 come across great. My Xbox looks pretty good over component. Haven't tried any other older system on it, and I don't have component cables for those systems anyway. I have 20" SDTV back in the bedroom I could attach those systems to if I were so inclined.

Is there any gaming lag? How do you have it connected?

A plasma is definitely not for him.

Via HDMI, through a receiver that is also hooked up via HDMI.

I detect no appreciable gaming lag. No lag has ever stopped me from getting active reloads in Gears, or insta revving in DMC4, or nailing moves in SC4.

LCD is the king. Plasma fegs retreat along with your dying technology.

I don't know the answer to either question.

Do you use game mode when you play games or is it fine with normal settings? I'm thinking about getting a 46 inch LCD, the 650 seems like the best bang for the buck, and seeing how winter is over I have no use for a plasma.

I do not use game mode. I just have some color/contrast/brightness calibrations done.

I got a LN40A550 samsung and I love it. It may be 60hz but its still lovely. Until lag is completely diminished and black levels are like crt's or better you cant go wrong with any of the samsungs.

650 does seem to be the best lcd.  the input lag has me sort of worried, but if you say it's not there then that's good.  i don't really play twitch games anyway.  fighters and QTEs seem like more worrisome than something like an active reload, which you can learn to anticapte the lag.

My Sharp Aquos is pretty tight. PiP would be nice feature, which I dont have. I think it has overscan issues too - could explain why all my Wii games arent even widescreen (except nintendo ones)

I'm going to go with that Samsung I guess.  My Dad has a Samsung LCD that has been problem-free for him, and it rates the best in the reviews I've read.  The comparable Sonys and Sharps being more expensive make it an easier choice.

Any tips Draft?  I know enough to turn off most video processing, and have got a copy of DVE Bluray.  Any gamma or backlight suggestions?

All of that shit is going to depend on the room you're watching in, and personal preference. Google the calibration guides for whatever set you get, and start from there.

I don't know my settings off hand but I think I have sharpness at 0 (natch), backlight on like 5 or 6, brightness and contrast somewhere in the middle maybe? I'd have to go check.
