EB (tabasco) recommend me a need for speed
« on: December 18, 2008, 09:07:55 PM »
I've never played a NFS game, so I downloaded the Most Wanted demo and it was pretty fun. ProStreet is available for only 11 bucks from gamefly. I asked GAF which one I should get and they gave me 900 different answers stretching back to like NFS3 on the PS1 one or something. no. It needs to bet his gen since I need pretty graphics.

I'm pretty tolerant of shit framerates as long as the games are fun. Is ProStreet good? Carbon looks a bit assy but ProStreet looks cool. Or should I just dive in and get Undercover?

My options are...

Most wanted (fun, kind of shit graphics?, old)
Carbon
ProStreet
Undercover

u tell me!

Most Wanted is probably the nicest looking, since it doesn't have a colour palette consisting solely of neon pink and dark streets.

Most Wanted is the best game out of all of those.

Pro Street is the best looking, but it's a pretty shitty game.  Most notable part of the game is the great smoke.

Why do you really want to play a NFS game anyway?

Go play Haze or something if you want a shitty swan song game.

If you want a good racer, there are many better ones this gen even in just the street racing subgenre.  PGR4, GRID, and Midnight Club LA are all good recent alternatives.  If you want to go older, try Test Drive Unlimited.

FlatOut Ultimate Carnage. Buy it. Love it. Treads such an awesome line between sim and arcade, and is absolutely gorgeous.

Most Wanted, dude.

I had a lot of fun with it, it should be dirt cheap by now (since it was a 2005 release I think), and Josie Maran :drool

The downside is that I hate sandbox racing games but there is always enough for you to do with plenty of challenge.  Towards the end, some missions really suck as you get the police that drive in Hummers that basically try to knock you around.  A lot of fun!

Didn't play Pro Street or Carbon but they look like NFS games that tried to recapture the spirit of Underground, which, I didn't care too much for those games.

I already played Haze...it's pretty unplayable.

Midnight Club is better? Most Wanted has fun running from cops ^___^

I'm 90% sure Midnight Club has you evading cops, although that isn't the focus of it.  Others may disagree but I think that the crux of what Most Wanted is all about is in the demo and unless you really care about trying out other cars and all that, playing the demo over again would probably be enough.

I only played a bit of LA at a friends house and it felt exactly like Midnight Club 3 to me, which is a really good thing.  I want to pick it up, it's just that I have an RPG backlog and want to play Valkyria first, so hoping that it drops it price when I eventually do get it.

And a bit random, but the game Wheelman looks like it will be pretty fun.  It's like Driver 1 meets Pursuit Force.

y2kev said nothing that old

Besides, it's Hot Pursuit 2 that's the best NFS game.  Specifically the PS2 version of Hot Pursuit 2 and not the weird other versions that aren't as good.

My fav is actually Carbon, though I'd say 80% of people I know prefer Most Wanted.  I really don't enjoy the forced progression in Most Wanted where I have to do a lot of cop chases just to race.  And to be clear, Carbon requires almost no cop chases.  If you really like that aspect, then go with Most Wanted.

Someone mentioned Flatout, and it is outstanding.  It really is Redneck Burnout, with an occasionally frustrating physics engine.

Yeah, getting knocked off your line by a piece of fence is fucking annoying, because it gets pretty technical later in the game - you really quickly learn that you can't just smash your way to victory over and over.

I like cop car chases, but I also like racing. That's kind of why I thought Undercover was supposed to be good-- you could just go from one thing to the next to the next without a lot of crap in the way.

NFS is like Madden in how quickly the games drop in price, so maybe I will go to the store tomorrow and see what I can find. I also need to get gas :\

Undercover just isn't good.  It's so bad technically it saps a lot of the fun.  I was able to get a few hours of fun from Most Wanted before it felt like grinding.  It's probably the best place to start.

edit:  Don't get Midnight Club II unless you enjoy pausing the game action every 30 seconds looking at a map.

Now I want to try this Carbon you speak of! :hyper

Prostreet is 20 MSRP/11 from GF, so I figure I should be able to grab MW and Carbon for like 20 tomorrow.

prostreet is bad (I like sim racers, keep in mind)?

I put midnight club LA on my queue.

The demo of ProStreet was enough for me to know I didn't want it.

Carbon is racing.  It's shorter and easier than Most Wanted.  It's also better imo.  Good choice buying both, though.

That wasn't terrible, it was kind of unmemorable though. I just had to race in a straight line.

Does anyone get the impression that these consoles render better in SD or something? It's like I'll play a game in SD and it'll run great and then I'll play it in HD and it will run like shit.

I've only played one game in SD, and it was Quake4.  Didn't notice anything different.  darkx10 has something similar about one of the Tomb Raiders.  I'll take the framerate hit for HD rez.

I only played the Forza 2 demo on SD before at a friend house and it only helped to remind me that I'm a huge nerd.  They were all going crazy over the graphics and I'm sitting there thinking that even in HD the game doesn't look that great compared to other racing games this gen, and this is them watching it on an SDTV...no wonder they're all Wii owners.

I haven't tried it yet, but it really can't be as good as the second one.

I should go buy it today.

have you played Midnight Club 3? I thought 3 had better single player stuff than 2, but the multiplayer wasn't as much fun.  Midnight Club 2 multiplayer was a blast.

Okay, I see why EA is going to be laying these people off. They are basically all redundant. It doesn't really do anything better than Burnout and does a whole lot worse. Well, not true. It does shuffle you quickly from event to event and the geeky story stuff is kind of cool.

Criterion could rock this shit.

the driving mechanics aren't as good as Midnight Club 3, but after spending a decent amount of time with LA, I think a big part of it is the weird camera.  Every single camera option is terrible.  It's so weird since Midnight Club 3, even the PSP game, had good driving cameras.  it does kind of feel like you're car has a giant ball in the middle that causes you to spin in unnecessary ways.

I'm still enjoying it, just not as much as Midnight Club 3.  AI is shit tho.  Both the other racers, civilians, and cops are really annoying.  Are drivers in LA so distinguished mentally-challenged that they would drive into a car? it's like they won't deviate from their predetermined paths.

Midnight club LA is a boat racing game, camera is horrible with the car stuck in the center of the screen. this isn't even better than burnout or motorstorm, so it's definitely not the best this year.

I'm done getting other racing games for a while.  I have my PGR4, Burnout Paradise, Motorstorm 2 trio I always go back to anyway since they're the most fun.  (and Wipeout HD, but I wanted to say trio)

I'll still play Midnight Club for a while and see if getting cars later on will make it more fun, but getting money is annoying hard.  And the damn cops take $800 when I get $250 for a 4 minute race.  And then I actually need to upgrade my current car to actually match up with the absurd AI drivers, so I'm left with no money to buy more cars.  This is reminding me too much of real life money situations.
