He fell asleep infront of his laptop.
He went to a doctor and he probably slept on a nerve or something. He received some medication but it doesn't seem to be improving.

Didn't know that could happen! :gloomy

Holy fuck, now I will really freak out, the next time I sleep on my arm.
Usually I just tell myself nothing bad can happen, but you took that away from me...

I hope your step dad will recover!

Whoa seriously you can get paralyzed from this shit? Sounds like something my mom would tell me... And I used to sleep on my arm all the time. :-\

Hope your dad gets better though.

when I clicked on this, I was expecting a followup post a half hour later that said something to the effect of "Oh, he's fine now, his sensation of pins and needles was only a false alarm."

Shit man, that is frightening.  I hope he recovers.

I often have something like that too, when I sleep on my arm I can't move it after waking up for like 30 sec until the blood flows back in. If you sleep like that too long shit like with your stepdad can happen yeah.

Hope he gets better.

I do this almost nightly.

Anyone ever had sleep paralysis?  When I wasn't sleeping well I got it pretty often, it was weird/scary and is amazing the lack of disconnect the brain has with the body when you are 'asleep.'

If I slept one of my arms to death that would be tragic, I hope your dad is alright.  I've often felt it was my legacy to lose a limb (my dad's dad lost an arm due to a bad break/quack doctor in his 20's) so perhaps this is the way I'll go out.  I'll bump this topic when it happens.

I think he'll be kay. One time when I was 13 I woke up and couldn't move my head. I had to walk around school with my ear to my shoulder for like 3 days. Good news was that I got out of P.E. !!

My Dad did this. It took him like 6 months to get back to full mobility, he pinched a nerve or something

Worrying and yet hopeful at the same time. Can you give some more details? How long did it take to get any feeling again?

I was really young- He fell asleep on the couch and pinched a nerve. I think he had limited mobility but it was incredibly painful. I just remember that it was a really long time, 6-9 months, before he was able to be 100% again

I did this once. I could not scratch my nuts without blinding pain for a month. But it does get better over time in most cases.

Now I'm going to be paranoid every time I sleep. I wake up with limbs asleep constantly.

Hope he gets better Tieno.

Permanent paralysis?  That sounds real strange considering the vast majority of palsy conditions are temporary (though they can last many months).  I can't imagine sleeping on an arm would be a permanent palsy - considering i've never even heard of that happening.  I hope he recovers Tieno, I have a feeling he will.

Because of my dad's unmanaged diabetes, he has a temporary palsy on his optical nerve.  I don't understand why your dad's would be permanent.

It can take a while to get normal again. Sometimes, it requires physical therapy to push things along.

I don't know, I only have the details they sent me in the e-mail. I also posted this to get some more information from people who have had more experience with this. Some of the posts here have been comforting and reassuring, thanks!

Same thing happened to Dave Mustaine of Meagdeth. Dave fell asleep in a chair, messed up a nerve and had to reteach himself how to play guitar. Hope your dad gets better.

So, I'm at Bloodwake's house and he was browsing and I had to reply.

This has happened to me.  It's called radial nerve palsy, or wrist drop.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrist_drop

Took me about 10 months to get full flexation back in my hand.  There wasn't any pain, just complete immobility.  Usually caused because you sleep ontop of something that presses against your arm, right where the nerve is.  It took about 8 months of OT therapy.  Its all stuff you can do at home if you know what to do.

And I had a big fucking brace that I had to wear that was a total pain.  The OT person can usually order that.  Medication doesn't really help, it's more of a time thing.  Tell him to be ready to wait for a while.  Pix of brace when I get home (if the thread's still around).

I slept on my left arm while taking a nap today. I couldn't move it for a full half hour after I woke up. It freaked me out.

I'm never going to sleep on my couch again. It fucking sucked.

No, I couldn't move my arm an inch. It was just dangling and seemed as limp as my dick.
