And my night is capped: I just heard libertarians on the radio
« on: December 19, 2008, 10:16:22 PM »
I turned off my Zune and checked out the radio to see what the landscape looks like.  I believe that one cannot be properly "plugged in" to society without at least minimal exposure to the lowest common denominator traits of our gross and collapsing capitalist society, so I make sure I stay up to date on radio ads and what gets airpaly and the like.

Seeing it was almost 7, I turned on KIRO, hoping to catch some Too Beautiful to Live, but there was instead this insane ranting libertopian dude talking about how some billionaire businessman needs to rise up and form a defacto third party, eschewing the current US political system and going completely rogue, buying up lots of TV time in all 50 states and all sorts of nonsense.  He even went on to compare this idealized character to BRUCE WAYNE, which was also hilarious.  I think he may have seriously been a bit drunk; either that or some sort of hillbilly.  He later forgave some of John McCain's faux pas (particularly the "Obama has said a lot of bad things about the people in PA, and, well, I AGREE" one which was awesome) because he was a POW.  I'm not kidding.

And then I turned on The End and they were playing some song called Backdoor Santa or something by Jet.  I silently prayed to Putin or whatever one of his puppets controls this things and wished for the USSR to rain nuclear fire on the United States.  We deserve it, we really do.

In his defense Batman is THE libertarian of the super hero universe. He's also the most popular super hero.

Coincidence?  I think not.

Too bad superheros are for children and, well, manchildren, which would explain why foolish idealism such as libertarianism has a home there.

If Batman was a Libertarian wouldn't he stop helping people who are too weak protect themselves?

What does money have to do with it?

I'm libertarian on some positions,  but I'm liberal in others, and if I followed my own foolish ideals, I'd be some flavor of anarchist.

hell, i'm libertarian on most social positions, if you get right down to it.

I think I should be able to buy guns and any drugs I want.  I think there are far too many laws.

Where I am not rationally libertarian is that I believe in social programs (including "entitlement" programs) and I think big businesses need to be regulated to a degree.  I'm also anti-lobbyist.  That shit should just be banned outright if it's going to basically be mainline corruption and purchased influence.

i think drugs should be legalized to a degree

i would never support the legalization of heroin, for instance

but i think pot and lsd are fairly harmless (well, no more harmful than tobacco or alcohol)

spoiler (click to show/hide)
and i'll own guns whether they're legal or not

batman isn't a libertarian, but most libertarians have batman fantasies about gearing up and dealing vigilante justice to some negroes

that's because that's an accurate representation of the eighties: mohawks, leather, and mutants roaming post-apocalyptic urban wastelands, waiting to be beaten with pipes by men with bleach-blond mullets and sleeveless t-shirts

I have no idea why you'd expect me to argue that point.  I love Caligula, but it is a bad, bad wreck of a movie.

the 80s weren't so awesome to live through, though

not because of politics or anything like that

the culture as a whole was slightly embarrassing, even at the time

That's what I was getting at.  I guess my "cultural awakening" was probably in 91 or 92, but even then, as a youngin, I remember being kind of astounded that 80sish things were ever popular or accepted.

i remember girls on the school bus dressed as "Durannies"  (Duran-Duran fans) and Madonna wannabes

i remember this one girl playing "Planet Rock" over and over again on her handheld tape recorder

i remember Fangoria magazine

i remember reading Elektra Assassin and Stray Toasters, and being completely blown away by Bill Sienkiewicz's art

i have lots of memories set to tunes by Oingo Boingo, The Outfield, and Howard Jones

yeah, the 80s were pretty awesome

I liked the 80s a lot.  Too bad I was kid in the 80s.

Fave 80s icons: PeeWee's Playhouse, cheesy action flicks, chemistry sets--remember those what the heck happened to those, Gremlins, yada yada yada

meh.  I hated the 90s.  Not because of the artistic output, but because it was a depressing time for me.

we weren't gonna die, it was all hyperbole

we just didn't have an internet to filter out all the bullshit

i envy you younger people

my friends and i used to dream about making low-budget movies, and comics, and art

it's so easy nowadays, and costs so little

you had to have $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ to do anything when i was coming up
