The "Bob's Game" dude is scaring me
« on: December 21, 2008, 07:23:19 PM »
Apparently he has barricaded himself in a room for 100 days until Nintendo sends him a development kit. There is a live camera feed so you can watch him.

http://www.bobsgame.com/

"I cannot leave this viridian room. The door is locked and barricaded from the outside.
I am sleeping behind the camera, and yes- I've got a shower. Food is delivered once a week by a friend.
I have no internet access, television, or game consoles besides those I am developing on.
I can receive and send email on my Android G1, so I can get Nintendo's reply and update my site with tether.
The LED counter will be incremented once a day, and sometimes it will display hints and secret messages.

This is my 100 day protest to Nintendo!"

The game itself is somewhat intriguing, but locking himself in his room in protest seems counter-intuitive to gaining respect from a major corporation.

I locked myself in a room for a month when FFTSW came out (really), because I was embarrassed to be an FF fan  :-[

I also locked myself in a room for seven months in 2003 (really) after a girl came on to me because she thought I was deep or something.  I was bullshitting and the fact that she fell for it made me feel ashamed of myself, her, and the world in general.

Peloni has started releasing the addresses of Nintendo execs and offering semi-creepy holiday greetings to Reggie. Oh, also, he's begun threatening to ... well, as he said:

"If I cannot legitimately publish my game, the only option left to fulfill this goal is to bundle a KILLER APP with a DSi enabled 'homebrew device.' ... 'bob's game' is being translated into many languages, including Japanese, and will be released worldwide. Unfortunately, this has the potential to significantly cut into Nintendo's bottom line."

"bob's game" has never been intended as "homebrew." I've aimed to make a commercial game from the very start.
I have tried every approach to release "bob's game" through official means- because it was never intended as a "homebrew" game.
Yet "bob's game," a highly-anticipated, highly-publicized, retail-length, retail-quality, 20-hour-long, 64 megabyte adventure title- is being treated as such.

Releasing a retail length, retail quality game as "homebrew" indeed makes "bob's game" a KILLER APP for "homebrew-enabling" devices.
I do not want to support these devices, because many of them are able to run commercial software. This is damaging to developers like myself.

This puts me in a major predicament. Do I simply give up on five years of tireless effort? I cannot!
I am attempting to inform Nintendo what could happen if this project is released in the only way they have left me.
I am partying hard for them- publicly, on live broadcast, for 100 days- I do not want to release "bob's game" as "homebrew."

"bob's game" is a five year, fifteen-thousand-hour masterpiece.

How can I say this to make them understand?
THE GAME IS TREMENDOUSLY GOOD. IT'S EXTRAORDINARY! IT MIGHT SELL A MILLION COPIES.
I'VE BARELY SHOWN ANYTHING AT ALL FOR A REASON. I'M NOT GOING TO SPOIL IT TO PROVE IT TO YOU.
YOU WILL FIND OUT WHEN IT'S RELEASED. I AM TELLING THE TRUTH! IT'S GREAT!
ARE YOU HONESTLY GOING TO FORCE ME TO RELEASE IT FOR FLASHCARTS? ARE YOU INSANE?!
THE GAME IS ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!

Happy New Year, REGGIE!
(You're the best! I'm counting on you!)

he's breaking down after 20-some days  :lol

wow

Quote
I am publicly partying hard for a Japanese company with a Japanese style celebration to sell me what I require (and meet requirements for)
to legitimately publish my game in a way that costs them nothing, puts them at no risk, and makes them licensing money.

As I've said from the very beginning,
My goal is to release a cartridge form of "bob's game" for the DS and DSi platforms.

If I cannot legitimately publish my game, the only option left to fulfill this goal is to release a KILLER APP for a DS "homebrew device."
There has never been a true KILLER APP released for this kind of device, especially as a launch title for a brand new console.
"bob's game" is being translated into many languages, including Japanese, and will be released worldwide.
Unfortunately, this has the potential to significantly cut into Nintendo's bottom line.
(I really don't want that! Nintendo is AWESOME! They make the best games in the entire world!)

I like Nintendo.
The last thing I want to do is release my game in a way that might damage them.
Why do you think I spent five years making a "Nintendo game?"
I am going to see this project through to the end, and they are leaving me with no choice.
I've tried everything, and it's gotten me nowhere. I have done nothing wrong.

News of my epic 100 day party has now reached several major Japanese gaming sites.
This means that Nintendo of Japan is becoming aware of what its Western branch has done-
and they are beginning to receive a great deal of negative PR on their home front.

In other words- because of what may (or may not) be the decision of a single NOA executive for a personal reason-
Nintendo of Japan may now be at risk of some very serious consequences.
(That would be really awful! I like Nintendo! I'm hoping they contact me and sort this matter out!)

I'm NOT WRONG, and it WILL WORK.

About a week ago I was contacted by a representative of a hacker-for-hire organization.
They said that someone was attempting to hire them to take my site down, but they refused the job because they support me. (I'm sure it was a joke, of course!)
My site is now being DDoS'd from a known commercial botnet and my servers are being scanned by another known hacker-for-hire group. (Some goon I'm sure.)

This is very serious. (business!)
Someone at Nintendo wants to silence me.
(I'm sure someone does, anyway!)
I wonder who it is?
(I really do! Stop that!)

The whole thing looks very early 90s SNES.  It's got no style and the vids really don't show the core gameplay.  Nintendo is a fucking piece of shit garbage maker, but I fully support them shitting all over this deluded distinguished mentally-challenged fellow.

Ergh, I liked Lagoon, too.  I haven't tried it in like 15 years and I am sure it is actually terrible, but back when I was a wee little poor lad, I rented the thing until I beat it.  Same goes for Ys 3 SNES, which I am also sure is probably actually terrible.

I remember the "attract mode" of Lagoon having cool music.  I put attract mode in quotes because that term feels wrong when applied to anything other than arcade games.

I rented it but got stuck (as in no idea what to do stuck, not can't beat a boss stuck) in the last dungeon.

Anyway, my problem with this isn't that it's not revolutionary or the graphics look bad or I think there's anything wrong with SNES-style adventure games or with one person spending five years on a game or anything like that.  I think if you create all the details yourself, even if you don't make any radical departure from existing game conventions, your personality will come out strongly in the final product, which is interesting in itself.  The problem is I get the impression the guy has a fairly unpleasant personality, and I don't mean his Aspergers or whatever.  e.g. the guy in the first trailer who's supposed to be a pacifist I guess.

Lagoon has some sweet-ass music but the small sword length makes combat seem very trial-and-error and luck driven. The game is also a total Ys ripoff.

Apparently Bob has been contacted by a chinese company who can distribute his game on a flash cart via wal-mart

Quote
I have been approached by a Chinese homebrew cart manufacturer that can secure a retail distribution deal with Wal-mart, similar to what Tengen or Galoob did, but on a DSi enabled homebrew cart with "bob's game" included on a microSD card, for less than the price of a high-budget DS title. It gives them the legitimate means they've needed to go to retail, and it gets my game on a cart.
The plan will work.

I think the premise of the game is that the player is insane.

It would make sense why it's supposed to be with Nintendo, why Bob wants it to be sold for real cash moneys, and why Bob acts like he does.
