But in seriousness, what kind of work do you actually do for the advertising firm? What kind of skills do you need to have to do well there? Advertising is one of the fields I was considering looking into.

My title is "IT Support", but in addition to doing general software/hardware support for the users, I've also done image work, Flash stuff and some solutions for scripted prepress/preflight. My background is a three year university education in graphic design with a strong influx of technical knowledge for print. After school I've been working for three different newspapers, two temp contracts and one longer employment for three years. Did IT support/prepress then as well. I decided to go for the technical side since I am a mediocre designer at best.

Serious answer is that I'm a Distribution Engineer of Natural Gas.  So it is my job to basically ensure that everything is up to regulation, ensuring that there is enough natural gas flowing through the pipes, setting up natural gas systems from homes to large businesses, designing gas regulator stations, etc.  Twice a year, I will go to conferences with utility boards and discuss regulation matters.

The pay is pretty damn nice for a starting graduate and since it is an essential utility, it is pretty recession proof.  Someone, somewhere in my district is going to use natural gas.  That is where I'm needed.
