Movin' South...
« on: December 22, 2008, 12:42:21 PM »
So, we're going to be moving from Michigan to Alabama. What an interesting change that'll be. It'll be nice not having to deal w/ this snow. But I will miss my family and friends. :(

Also, I've been at this job for 7 + years, so it's kind of hard letting it go. Today is my supposed last day, but hell I've even consider coming in after I quite just to finish shit up. :lol :( Sometimes this place can be a pain in the ass, but overall I guess it isn't too bad. I will miss it for damn sure, I dunno I felt I had to make a thread about it.

What do you guys think about the south? :lol Does anyone here live down that way? or are we all yankees?  :lol

Where in the south? Why are you moving?

If was to live in any southern city it'd be Atlanta. But even though I've lived in central/south my whole life I think I'm more of a northern person. It's been calling me for years.

The south is okay but there's a few things to know:

1. have a car. Unless you're in a big city, public transportation is seriously behind compared to the north, midwest, and far west.

2. The weather is typically random. This winter in Houston, for example, has been surprisingly "cold" (by our standards). Even in winter time, sometimes it can get a little warm.

3. Be prepared for hot summers. Personally that's one thing I love about the souf.

LA here.

as Himu said, weather is insane here. High of 41 today, and will be in the 70's tomorrow.  :-\

With modern advances in technology, it's fairly easy to lead a somewhat civilized life pretty much anywhere, I can at least vouch that there is internet in Alabama (since 2002!).

Might want to buy a Crimson Tide hat.  :lol

 :lol :lol no way.

Well, 1 good thing, I'm only 2 hours from Atlanta and 2 hours from Nashville. So, that should be pretty cool. I've been in Michigan all my life, so it's going to be a interesting change for me.

As for music, my sound already sounds south, so hell at least that'll fit. :P

Jesus, ALABAMA? You'll be lucky if you have electricity, let alone an internet connection.  I heard they just got 14.4k modems there, fast fast!

I'm in Atlanta.  It's all right, one thing I can say I like is the weather.  It's a bit cold right now, but the last few days were so warm you could walk around outside in a t-shirt.  On the flip side, the traffic here is horrendous.  Some of the worst in the country, I believe.  When it's rush hour, you might as well stay at home or wherever you are for a couple of hours until it dies down, because you aren't going anywhere.  Oh, and downtown Atlanta is a dirty shit hole.

2 hrs from Cashville and the ATL? that puts you sorta near Lake Guntersville.

I've been there. It's nice.

Just don't be like the last guy from Michigan I saw down there, trying to go out on the lake in whitecaps. Sumbitch was lucky it was 4 foot deep where he was :rofl

Alabama? Well, I guess get either a Tide or Auburn hat and start watching NASCAR with the rest of the good ole boys. You'll be known as a Yankee, your Children as Yankee brats, and their kids as the kids of those Yankee brats.  ;)

Nah, hope you like it down here. But do get ready for some hot summers.

After getting stuck in a mcdonald's entrance today, Alabama sounds better than Michigan.  lol, I can't believe it took us a few minutes and a lot of burnt rubber to get fast food :rofl

Make sure Kaiden behaves.  If not, Uncle Dan will steal his three-six-zero next time he visits.

:lol The line of cars behind us was getting rather big before we got out. :P I didn't know if you saw that. :lol

The kid always like hanging out w/ you. :) After he gets his three-six-zero I'll tell him Uncle Dan said be good or you'll beat him up and take it when you come down. :lol

That puts you somewhere around Birmingham, which is where I live and have spent most of my life.  Like most cities, the downtown sucks (save for a few very cool areas) and you want to spend most of your time in areas around the city.  Despite the shit given to Birmingham by Atlantians, it's actually just a smaller Atlanta with less traffic, fewer jobs, and less to do.  It's greener and hillier than what you're probably used to, for sure.

I've got 28 years of advice on what to do (there's a surprisingly good theater scene), what to eat (Milo's Jim N Nicks, etc), and what areas are best to live in for what you want to do.  Just let me know if you have any questions about anything.

I've only been to Huntsville, waaaaay too small for me, but the people there were surprisingly non-redneck. Probably because you have so many engineers due to the NASA location down there. Where in Alabama are you gonna be?

Huntsville is definitely the most progressive (and fastest-growing) city in the state.  If I didn't have so many friends and family here in Birmingham, I'd seriously consider it.
