Virtual goods are selling like hotcakes in Sony's new PS3-based virtual world 'Home,' says Susan Panico, Sr. Director of the Playstation Network at Sony (SNE) in an exclusive interview with SAI.

When everyone has the same tools to create a virtual worlds avatar, buying something no else has -- or no one else can afford -- is the only way to stand out.

Susan didn't provide numbers, but she said in Home's first four days, virtual goods priced from 49 cents to $4.99 have generated more revenue for Sony than PS3 movies and video priced up to $14.99 generated in their first week. "It's a classic 80/20 model, where 20 percent of your customers create 80 percent of your income," she said.

The hot ticket item so far: Costumes, with Santa Claus outfits being a huge seller. "You can imagine the opportunity with costumes for partnering with other companies and their intellectual property," Susan said.

She's a PR monkey, so hopefully it's all smoke.  Home being a success would be the biggest letdown in gaming since Wii blew up.

im guessing there's very little video and movie content under $15 and even if there isnt she says 20% is providing 80% of the income. so it's just 20% of home users are massive fegs, instead of just being regular fegs

Sounds like PR spin to me - they would have put out a press release with an exact dollar figure otherwise - but still... :yuck

After seeing all the horseshit people buy on XBL (themes, crap shovelware) nothing shocks me anymore.

I love how she doesn't hide the rationale that people are buying shit to stand out from everyone else. There's something that just feels icky about that.

Doesn't sound like much at all or else a solid figure would have been presented.  Maybe it is a few hundred thousand dollars or a little over a million; which isn't bad but hardly a stunning success.  It will be interesting if people will continue to buy costumes and whatever next year once Home's newness fades away.

In fact, anything that Sony is able to make a profit on is probably big news for them and worthy of a press release.

She's just saying it did better than the first week of the movie service...did that do really well?  'cause honestly, I forgot you could even rent movies on the PS3.  Since she didn't cite any hard numbers, I'll assume it wasn't anything impressive.

Do sfags still care about FFXIII anymore since SE betrayed Sony and defiled their honor?

Probably not. I seem to remember a bunch of people playing the game up as Sony's Ace or something. PS3 losing hope :'(

Edit: Dcharlie hit the nail on the head. Versus is the new FFXIII.

FFXIII is the new FFXIII

Versus is the new Kingdom Hearts when KH3 gets trashed up on the Wii (btw, Versus will probably end up on 360)

More and more I get confused when Japanese devs only go single platform with next gen games.  Sega should port Kenzan and RGG3 to the 360 to make them more viable in the states.  Same with Valkyria.

sega has some weird hate-on for ms post-xbox. i think something in the ms-sega relationship went sour a couple years ago? maybe dcharlie or one of the industry types around here can clarify.

I thought there was drama over sega getting screwed over the JSRF/Sega GT pack-in or something like that?

I thought Sega was just nostalgic for it's prime when it was last place that they keep supporting the current last place console.

your FF sf@g simple opinion chart , from the XFE war department :

Pre-Ps1                   : lol - who cares?
PS1 / PS2 days         : FF - major system exclusive, best RPG ever.
GBA remakes            : Lol - old games rereleased who cares
GC/Wii FF title games : Not a major numbered FF release, doesn't count - and it's probably crap.
Post Betrayal ton      : Game will be on 582 disk
FFXIII Versus looks better anyways, it's the real FF13 we always wanted
Level 5 are the new SE anyways
WKS the first and only truly epic AAA+ RPG this gen anyways
Future ?                  : This game looks like crap because it was downgraded for the X360 version
FFVII remake probably took all the good deverlopers

Conclusion - no, they don't care about FF13, they care about FF13 Versus or any game that's a PS3 exclusive.

Mass credibility seppuku for Kagiri and co.

Needs to be updated for WKS disappointment-ton but otherwise, solid work as usual XFE.

HA! I actually bought the Rock Band one, just to see what the difference would be. I regret it, because I could have bought a song instead.
