I bought Guardian Heroes and Burning Rangers from someone on GAF a couple months ago as Christmas presents for myself (they cost $40 each 8)) and I'm going to go hook up my Saturn and play them.

Discuss the Sega Saturn here.

Panzer Dragoon Saga is pretty fun but no way worth $200.

Sega Saturn was worth it for Dragon Force alone.

I'm not sure any game is worth that, but PDS is really superb. Great battle system, great design, great music, great everything. It's such a gem. The day it gets a port to some console or remake or whatever and more people play it will be really great.

I like my Saturn, I think it has the best controller for 2D fighters, but I still think the Saturn is horribly overrated by internet forum kids.  Maybe it's because I'm not jappy enough to enjoy all the 2D and jappyness of it.

Don't say that! I've gotta pawn mine off one of these days!

I've still never bothered to pick up a copy of Shining Force or Burning Rangers. One of these days.

Guardian Heroes is definitely my fave on the system, though.

Saturn is a great system.  I have a bunch of the games that are hyped up by internet folks and they're all pretty great, though I don't know how much they'd cost you nowadays(I got my system, about 10 controllers including the Nights donut, PDS, Castlevania, Bomberman, Bust-a-Move 2, Shining Force 3, Guardian Heroes, and Radiant Silvergun all for $150 from a friend years ago 8)).  I've actually been thinking about breaking mine out again, but I have to buy a new video cable.  What's the best type available?

I never modded it 'coz I got it when I was in middle school, but I still had tons of fun with it.

 :bow Shining Force 3 :bow2
 :bow Dragon Force :bow2
 :bow Sonic Jam :bow2
 :bow Capcom Fighters :bow2

I also had Panzer Dragoon Saga at one point in time, but my feeble middle-school mind could not comprehend it that well so I let someone borrow it and haven't seen it since. Dude's not on Facebook either.  :'(

It's funny, because the turning point to buying a PSX was around the time Guilty Gear and Bust a Groove came out.

It was a great system but its 3D games have aged poorly (since they didn't look all that great to begin with) and a large majority of its 2D library, particularly the fighters, have been re-released as superior versions on other platforms.

Mine is sitting here and I'm going to hook it back up, but really all I can see in my collection that I'd want to play are Guardian Heroes, Cotton Boomerang, Elevator Action Returns (which is also on PS2), Keio Flying Squadron 2, and Bubble Symphony.  Yeah there's some great Capcom ports, but who cares when you can play the arcade games perfectly emulated?  And the mostly-mediocre Neo-Geo ports are all done better on the PS2 now.

It's funny how things change.  Years ago I would take the Saturn over the PSX in a heartbeat (although I played my Neo-Geo CD and later AES far more than either), but around 1998 things started to change and the PSX just got better and better.  Yes the Saturn version is better than the PSX version in comparison, but it was still a major turning point when the game hit the PSX with no Saturn version in sight (at the time).

Give me Guardian Heroes and (the original) Jet Set Radio on PS2 or another platform, and I'm done with Sega hardware, I think.  I sold off my Genesis/Sega CD/32X collection some years ago and don't miss it at all since I can play everything on my PSP.

SEGASATANN

Saturn was the best but the 3D games do NOT age well as mentioned above. Time to whip out the Sho Nuff collection and see what i gots

House of the Dead: Ugly but super fun with the gun
Toshinden Remix: OMG why do I have this, hilarious voice acting tho
PD Zwei: :bow :bow
VF2: Hot sex om nom nom, high res at 60fps ommmmggg
Ghen War: Puke
Virtual On: Good fast and playable
Golden Axe the Duel: Bad STV port drek, but it has Tyris Flare mmmm
PowerSlave: Fucking awesome, great fast FPS
Winter Heat: Winter Games on C64 was better
Sonic 3D Blast: Interesting but Genny ver is much more interesting/impressive
Decathlete: Better than Winter Heat
Mortal Kombat II: I seem to remember this being terrible with awful load times mid-move
Shanghai: This must have been one of the $1.99 games I got from walmart
Panzer Dragoon 1: Still Good
VR Virtua Racing: Turd, 32x was better
Virtua Cop: Mmm yes please
Street Fighter The Movie the Game: Hilariously bad
V Cop 2: More please
2D street fighters: all amazingly good
Tunnel B1: Dumb demo coder wankfest
Xmas Nights: Play it every holiday season
Tempest 2000: Better music than the jag
Daytona USA: Plays great but a visual abortion
Star Fighter: 3DO Port drek
Sonic R: Best music ever, actually playable, probably terrible now though
VF Kids: Bizarre joke taken too far
Scud the Disposable Assassin: Nice clean rendered 2D graphics with terrible gameplay, almost as bad as X-Perts
VR Virtua Racing: Why do I have two copies of this
Impact Racing: I don't think I've ever played this
Daytona Circuit Edition: Way better graphics with way worse control :(
Sega Rally: King of Saturn racers
Sega Touring Car: Came out way later than Rally but looks 10x worse. GROOVE TO ZA EUROBEATO SOUNDTRACK
Sky Target: Decent Model 2 port

This doesn't count my import selection which is back in my apartment in Japan....hmmm gotta bust out my Saturn again methinks. Also, do not play Saturn on an HDTV, RF modulators probably provide the most pleasing image on a 12-inch Zenith TV

Saturn looks surprisingly decent (well, as far as horrific 3D polygons go) on my plasma... BTW I didn't know they made Tempest 2000 for Saturn, I really want to play that game but I thought I would need to buy a Jaguar to play. Will definitely look into the Saturn version...

I do wish I still owned an old TV so I could play Virtua Cop 2.  Now the only light gun games I can play are the shitty Time Crisis 4 or Wii games with not-so-ideal controls.

It is an ok system but most of the best games have been re-released on other platforms.  That or superior sequels or remakes that make the originals pretty aged.  You could buy Metal Slug 1 for $45 but why the fuck would you when you could get a the Metal Slug Anthology that has seven games for $20.  Shit like that.

Another beef is that the software is overpriced in general.  You can find some good common hits like Virtua Fighter 2 for almost nothing but you have to pay out the ass for the good ones.  PDS is not worth $200 or $100.  HOTD seems nice to own but it is ugly as fuck, a butchered port, and expensive as fuck to own.  In other words, it is shit.  If this shit is unacceptable for the Wii, I don't see why I'd fork over funds for withered old Saturn games.

I'm still holding out that Sega will start bundling up their AGES collection and re-releasing them on 360, PS3, XBLA, or PSN.  They're good if you can get them for cheap but avoid the traps of buying expensive crappy games because only 10,000 copies were ever manufactured.

Edit: Speaking of crappy, overpriced, and undermanufactured games, did anyone play Final Fight Revenge?

It's still in my collection.  Right before I left Japan, I saw it in a store for 20,000 yen.  L-O-L-Z.  I knew it was gonna be shit going in, but I had to get it for the novelty value.  Truly an awful, awful game, and YET it got released.  There's no way Capcom Fighting All-Stars could have been worse than this.

I grabbed Panzer Dragoon Saga and Shining Force III for $20 each at Toys R Us, and I still kick myself for passing on Burning Rangers at that price.  I figured I'd grab it later, over 10 years later and I've never played it still.
