Is GOW worth buying on the PC?
« on: December 26, 2008, 01:44:04 AM »
Now that I'm rolling in dough I want to pick up another PC game to satisfy me when I don't feel like playing WoW. Most likely I'm going to get the Orange Box since it's such a great deal but I'm curious about GOW. The PC port up to snuff? I'll probably have to get a 360 controller to get the most out the game right?

It runs really well.  I didn't play it so much.  I basically just wanted to see how pretty it was on my monitor.

I just finished this game last week and here is a post from last weekend's "what are you playing" thread:

Quote from: me
omg, I must vent about Gears of War for Windows. I cannot express what a piece of shit this game is, but I am thankful that I experienced the superior 360 version when it launched otherwise I am afraid that I would have been permanently turned off of the series. Your AI teammates follow you........sometimes. Most of the time they stand in an area that you have already cleared and do not bother to progress. They put in this stupid fucking command system that works..........sometimes. My only guess is that they put in the commands to make up for the absolutely shitty follow AI. And as I said, it only works sometimes. And you can't count on your teammates to shoot at anything, even if there are locusts right in front of them. Several boss fights and areas have glitched on me, making me reload the checkpoint in order to progress. The enemies are super accurate this time around, and I have been killed several times while in cover. These things never happened to me on the 360 version.

There are only 2 pros to this port: 1.) The sniping is 2000x better with mouse controls and I can pop heads much easier. 2.) The graphics are much better (but even with v-sync turned on I get screen tearing like a motherfucker).

Oh, and to top it all off there were all of 3 people online playing the versus mode. What a fucking joke.

I cannot express how shitty this port is. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME  yuck
You can get this game cheap, and if you do end up getting it, hit me up and I'll play co-op with you. There is nobody playing this game online anymore.

I never noticed the shitty teammate AI, but I never pay attention to Dom anyway.  There is no online community.  but it's nice if you just want to play single player---GoW at 60fps is beautiful.  I bought it on launch and kinda regretted it.  I'd torrent it if I were you.

I thought it was pretty awesome, playing it in 60fps and at the highest detail settings. But yeah, if you've played it already, you may want to wait for a sub-$10 offer.

yeah, sub-$10 is the sweet spot.  Orange Box just completely destroys it in every respect.

Nah, I would agree with PD here.  The game was made for the 360 controller.  It was an original 360 game after all.

I actually preferred the PC controls over 360 pad. I got the PC game for only $15, and even at that price I cannot recommend it. Get the Orange Box.

You do know that it's a straight port, right? Other than the new levels and improved visuals, it's the same game. Basically, I don't understand your comments about the PC vs the Xbox 360 version.

By the way, did I sell this one to you? I sold it to some GAFer for $15.  :lol

No, I bought mine on sale at CC. I realize that it is a straight port, however I had friendly AI problems in the PC version that never happened in 2+ playthroughs of the 360 version. Dom hardly ever shot at enemies, even though they would be standing right next to him, and I even had several problems with all 3 teammates following me (i.e. they would stay in cover instead of following me to the next area, etc.). The made the game considerably more difficult on the PC, despite the much more accurate controls. I was able to play through the 360 version on Insane difficulty alone, by i found myself wanting to put my fist through the wall on Hardcore difficulty on the PC version.
