Should I buy a 360?
« on: December 27, 2008, 08:27:53 PM »
Here's the story:

My brother had a launch unit 360 that I used, but it broke a couple months ago and instead of getting it repaired, he just put it away in his drawer until the warranty ran out. There's no way we're paying $100 to get it fixed when it will likely break again in a few months.

Of course, he refuses to buy a new 360, so I'm thinking of buying one for myself.

A couple of questions:

- Is the Arcade unit the new smart buy (especially since I already have a hard drive)?
- What do I need to know about the DRM bullshit?
- Should I wait a bit or buy one now (and risk missing a price drop, improved model, deal, etc)?

thx

Price drop to what? It's $200 now. Quermo

DRM is content you buy is tied t that Xbox & Gamertag you're using. Put your Gamertag (be it by recovery, memory card, or hard drive) on another Xbox, it reverts back to trial mode (or doesnt even work in the case of DLC), until you connect to Live to authenticate - and even then you have to stay on Live. This is remedied with the License Transfer Tool in the case of your Xbox dying, but you can only use that once every year.

Now is the right time to buy, imo.  Not likely to see a price drop in the next six months or so I'm guessing, and if you get an arcade you'll get the latest chipset (Jasper) which is the way to go.

If you get the Arcade, you'll probably want to get a harddrive.  You can get a 60 gig, headset and 3 months of live for $100.  That's what I did.  Oh, also be aware that if you get the Arcade you'll need to get an hdmi cable or component cables since the arcade only comes with yer standard a/v.

If it "broke" by red-rings, every xbox is warrantied for up to 3 years of purchase date.

True, I missed the word launch. I would still call them and if they say you're out of warranty... tell em to fuck off and hang up

Arcade now comes with 256MB of on board memory (on the newest models), and 214MB of that are free. I imagine most of it will then be used by the NXE.
