The Tales Series
« on: December 30, 2008, 02:35:20 PM »
I'm really enjoying Tales of Vesperia on the 360 and wanted to know if there are other Tales titles worth checking out as well.  The ones that come to mind are Abyss for PS2 and Symphonia for GCN.  A Symphonia sequel recently came out as well for Wii, but I heard it was garbage.  Are Abyss and the original Symphonia worth playing?  Are they on par with Vesperia in terms of quality?

I haven't played Vesperia yet (hear it's good tho) but of Abyss and Symphonia, Abyss is the way to go.  Better battle system (field of fonons, free run) and not as many cringe inducing stereotypical homojapual characters, plot devices, etc.  Plus, Jerk Luke is awesome.

Well, really, no. I could see going back to Abyss. Has loading issues but it's not horrible. The cast blows compared to Vesperia. Mieu will make you want to die.

I also heard the skits in Abyss don't have voice acting.  Is that true?  Voiced skits really do give the game [Vesperia] charm.  It wouldn't be the same if you had to read them all the time.

Skits are for weeaboos. I dont watch any of them. You can buy them when you beat the game anyway, for the achievement. Meh

Neither Abyss or Symphonia have voiced skits.

I prefer Symphonia to Abyss, personally - better graphics, less technical issues (like horrible loading an a world map that runs at 5FPS), and less run-back-and-forth-between-towns. Destiny and Destiny 2 on PSX are pretty fun too, as is a SNES or PSX translated version of the original Phantasia. But whatever you do stay away from the GBA Phantasia port, it's horrible.

Symphonia was my first Tales game and I really enjoyed it, then I played most of the rest (not the DS games or PSP ones) and realized that Symphonia was the only one I actually liked, or really I just got bored after playing middling game after game.  I was hesitant on getting Vesperia, but after IU let me down I picked it up and now I consider that the best Tales game.

The Tales series is really weird for me.  I think if you play the best, you're better off not touching the rest, and Vesperia is the current best (UNTIL TALES OF TEN FOR WII!!! LOL).  Vesperia has the best combat, dialogue, and characters.

Symphonia is so... cloyingly homojapual tho.  I know that doesn't really bother you, but I feel dirty playing it.  Plus Abyss has muuuuuch better combat, with free run and field of fonons.

I enjoyed Symphonia and even liked Legendia, although I didn't finish it. Haven't played Abyss or anything else.

Although I must say playing the Vesperia demo this afternoon didn't do wonders. I think it's because it made me feel like I was too old to play that game.

The Vesperia demo didn't seem like a graphical juggernaut. It looked like it could have been on GameCube.

Vesperia looked alright for the most part.  I like how the cel shading was very sharp and clear compared to Naruto PS2 and Valkyria aliasing fest.

Blue Dragon is still the best looking 360 jrpg.

It will be comparable to the graphical quality of Vesperia. Because it is on a Wii, and a Wii is more powerful than a Gamecube.

Doesn't look much different to me. The point is I don't see how it being on Wii is a bad thing, graphically speaking. The Wii is powerful enough for this kind of game.

The characters are of different quality, but the scenery looks the same to me, or at least comparable. Keep in mind I'm also going off recollection and different televisions were used in the playing of Symphonia and Vesperia.

I still think SE will produce some kind of Chrono sequel at some point.  Maybe they could co-develop it with Monolithsoft, in which case I guess it would have to go on a Nintendo platform.

No particularly strong reason, just I'm not sure they have the manpower to do it internally at the moment, and MSI is as likely a choice as any (they already worked on background graphics for Dirge of Cerberus).  Kato's not at MSI anyway though, he's still freelance and actually is working on the new FFXI scenarios.
