Any Stern fans on EB?
« on: December 31, 2008, 02:12:05 PM »
I'm thinking of getting a Sirius subscription, primarily for the Stern show.  I just have some questions.  Is the show on demand?  Or does it only have a set timeslot just like when he was on regular radio?  Can I download the show legally, much like podcasts, with a sub?

I believe that after his show runs, they run his older stuff. He has his own channel so it's mostly all him. I think they rerun the show later in the day also. You can listen online too for a small extra monthly charge.

I listened for a while, but found it to be 80% boring most of the time.  What's good is very good, but man do you have to sit through a lot of inane chatter.  I was only familiar with the E! Stern show prior to listening, and I had no idea they spent so much time going on about pop culture bullshit (celebrity news, dancing with the stars, etc).

Yeah, I listened to stern on terrestrial radio originally.  I love that filler crap.

I listen every day, although I get his show from newsgroups.  I'm probably going to get a car sub this year though, although I'll still listen to what I grab online.

I don't think you can download it legally, but they sell/offer a thing called a Stilleto personal radio.  It has a HD inside and you can record the show or other music on that, it's pretty sweet and functional.  The show comes on from 6 am to 11 or so, has a few commercial breaks, and only comes on Mon - Thurs.  Friday they air 'Mastertape Theater' that is a whole old (usually terrestrial) show.  When he goes on vacation they try to put together specials to keep it interesting.

Stern has two channels and replays his show on both of them at various times, Bababooey and John Hein host the Wrap-Up show after the Stern show where they take calls and replay highlights of the show.  That show is pretty good if you're a big fan, as Artie comes on from time to time (as does Fred, Sal/Richard and various other players.)

If you've never heard the show on satellite you're in for a treat imo.  You should subscribe and also look for older shows to catch up on what you've missed.

I just cancelled last month. The quality of the show is as bad as it was in 2001. Stern isn't really trying any more and his bit players are pale comparisons of the ones he had in the past.

The first hour of the show is still solid (where they bullshit about the news, any events in their lives, etc). But hours 2 and 3 are full of scripted drama, porn whores or washed up celebs they have had on 100 times. Howard just doesn't care about mainstream pop culture anymore .. and it shows. Then he rushes through the news at the end of the show and barely pays attention. The news used to be the best part of the show.

The good news is that the rest of satellite radio is pretty awesome. Living in BFE Ohio, I hear a lot of music I would never hear on regular radio .. and they have a ton of other personalities, channels that are worth your time.

That sucks about the news section.  That was easily my favorite section back in the day.  I've recently heard some clips on youtube of his recent stuff and you're right about not caring about pop culture as much anymore.  The porn star stuff got old years ago.  I do love when he has comedians on.

I do miss Jackie the Jokeman as well, since he made a great punching bag.

This recent clip had me in stitches.
