Back to the daily grind!
« on: January 05, 2009, 08:03:36 AM »
Winter Quarter begins today, which means I have to start waking up at a set time everyday not just Friday (work day).  It's for the better though... sitting around like this makes me so lazy.  In fact I haven't left the house in three days.  I DON'T REALLY WANT TO THOUGH!

I'm going to be taking German.  Hopefully soon I can just get on Counter-Strike, join some German servers and yell at people.

WHO ELSE!

Eh, I've done both--granted my job doesn't require anything physically--and being that I want to 4.0 all my classes, I do just as much work as I would working at the job.

Research in library, reading, writing, studying and other boring shit.

The german class might make things easier than previous quarters, it's just a 100 level class, while my others are 300, and one 400.

WTF did you guys do at Uni that made it like a vacation?  I just do work--granted I find it pretty interesting work.  I find the work at my job interesting too though.

I worked 40 hour weeks for 3 years prior to getting back into Uni... and I can honestly say it consumes just as much of my time (I had a construction job for a while that was killer though)... and I still work one day a week presently (and weekends assuming there is work that weekend).

don't fool yourself into thinking that german is easy, though. it's hard! and you will hate a lot of things about it. the grammar is totally fucked up. :'(

the bonus is that once you get a really good hang of it, you can use it to scare people.

Deutsch ist ganz einfach wann sie Niederlandisch sein.

Isn't the German they speak in Sweichz all crazy and messed up though? High German or something.

high german or "hochdeutsch" is standard german. swiss german is a group of alemannic dialects. germans can't understand swiss german, but swiss people can understand german (hochdeutsch).

yeah it's nothing like standard german, a lot of words are completely different and the ones that are similar are pronounced way differently. it also sounds a lot nicer than german, imo.

i always liked this description of the way swiss german sounds:

Quote
It’s a language that implies movement. Simply put, its sounds are very up and down. Descriptively put, some parts of their words create sounds like that of a smallish round stone plopping into the river; of sand shaken within a container to slosh against and fall back from its walls. Of an object pushing into and then bounding off of a material that’s slightly elastic but still innately taut; and of a spring being twisted closer and closer around into itself.

it is a much more melodic and almost twangy sounding language than standard german, which leans much more on the monotone side.

here's a good example:

i still like the way german sounds because i think it's a very clean, structured-sounding language, which i like. but something about swiss german is just more charming :)

oh and you have a few mistakes in your sentence there... :P

I got back from lunch to find my headphones sitting on top of my desk in front of my monitor. Now I don't know if they've been in somebody else's ears. :(

Oh well, so much for those. The official record on them is still going to show MIA.

first class (advanced accounting) wasn't bad. The teacher actually let us discuss the current financial crisis instead of simply reading off a bunch of boring slides. I only have one class on Mondays :bow

I tried to pull that off but couldn't get it to work

monday: 1 class
tuesday: 3 classes (including one that starts at 6pm)
wed: 1 class
thursday: 2 classes

(the 6pm class meets once a week)

I like night classes. The people in the class are usually more serious which is always a plus

Yeah holy shit.  We spent the hour today introducing ourselves and telling each other commands like "sit down" and "shut the fuck up"--which I feel I was appalling at.  Plus she touched on the informal/formal thing, and asked us to spell our name with German syllables.  It was all harder than I thought.

HS Spanish seems like it will have been easier.
