I have a friend who is in the market for a netbook.  I know that we have quite a few users here and I was curious if there was anything they could suggest (either for or against).

I like my Eee PC 901.

Buuuuut, I think you can get better value for money now.
Pluuuuus, there's these new processors coming, so he should wait for that.

I'm too low-tech to be any more informative than this.

my own biases were for an XP version whose storage was flash based for the speed.

is processing power really all that necessary when you're essentially browsing or writing?

If you ask me, no. I love my Eee PC despite it's total lack of power and storage capability.

I wouldn't wait, but the thing I've seen around the web is people advising to wait. So, there you go.

He should try it in a store first.  I can barely use the home keys on the 9 inch version.  It'll take a little while to get adjusted even if you use a bigger one.

CES is happening soon, so he might want to keep an eye on product announcements from there.

why would you want a netbook when you could have a 17" laptop with a non-removable battery and anti-glare and drm-less music? it's too cool and you should get one because you need to be cool

I just got the Samsung NC10 and absolutely love it.

...well except for the fact that it has two thumb sized smudges on the goddam screen that, it turns out, are a manufacturing error on the part of Samsung.  Found a bunch of websites that are talking about it.  So now I have to send it off to Samsung to get a new screen.

Other than that I absolutely love it.

Prole might be right about the new HP.  Saw it at Best Buy on Monday and damn it looks nice.  Fast as lightning it was too.  Thin and sexy.  If it wasnt for the battery life on the NC-10 being so good I would just return it and get the HP one.

:'( I like just throwing my Wind in whatever bag I'm carrying and keep forgetting my VX Nano. Do you have that crazy air mouse Prole?

On the topic, Asus revealed a new netbook today:

- Tablet screen
- 2lbs., 1" thick
- Intel's Z520 Atom (dual-core?) onboard
- Built in TV Tuner and GPS

That's all well and good but where are the damn ION netbooks?!

i don't think i want to spend over $350 on something which is going to get thrown into a bag and is likely to get the hell beaten out of it over time

ughhhhhh

I was gonna order my 1000ha tomorrow, but I can't buy that now knowing the T91 is coming. Hopefully there's a date soon... I really need a netbook ASAP.

Actually Asus says "in 3-6 months" but no word on pricing. There's a couple of actual shots of the netbook in the link too.

specs are pretty much the same for all current netbooks. the hp one has the best keyboard by far, and (imho) the best size and form factor.
