ITT: hip hop and you don't stop
« on: January 08, 2009, 12:32:22 PM »
I've posted this before but it's too awesome for one mention: Deconstructing Illmatic. Features all the samples from the album as well as in depth analysis on the creative process

Deconstructing Illmatic
http://www.ohword.com/blog/926/deconstructing-illmatic

now on to other things: I've been going through albums from Big Daddy Kane and Rakim. This was brought about after my brother said Kane was better. So yea, I listened to Long Live the Kane for the first time in ages, and I ask the question: anyone think it's better than Paid in Full? I still say Rakim is the better rapper but I gotta take Long Live the Kane over Paid in Full...

now on to some videos

(Q-Tip's new album isn't bad btw)

And another shout out for Y Society's debut album Travel At Your Pace, which is absolutely amazing

PD that third video you posted was boring.

Eric P, not getting the 'modern day Del' reference. He sounds like Lupe more than anything.

XV is pretty cool. One of the "hip hop nerdsters" who can actually rap

I'm also liking Jay Electronica. Some of the hype is going overboard but he's tight

New DOOM ("Ballskin")
http://www.myspace.com/MFDOOM

Not feeling the beat too much (might be Jake One) but DOOM sounds good. Can't wait

And another shout out for When They Reminisce, an amazing hip hop blog. Check it out, you'll love it
http://whentheyreminisce.com/

kinda cluttered with "best of 08" posts but definitely check out some of the previous posts. Plus I've been checking out his "best albums 08" stuff; I slept on most hip hop last year

I like DOOM in small doses, and am vaguely psyched for his new shit.

I was trying to think of any hip hop I really got into last year, and the only thing that comes to mind is The Roots. This is the only original version of 'Rising Down' I could find on youtube...fake video.

3 year anniversary of Dilla's death. I can't say I'm a huge fan of his work, which is worshiped by tons of people. But no one can deny his impact, especially in terms of building the Detroit hip hop scene into one of the best in the country

Venomous Villain or Mouse and the Mask might be the most accessible, although Venomous Villain is so much better imo. Check out the Madvillainy album

Operation Doomsday is great but it might sound too raw to some people; I wish I could find the remastered version. MM Food is good, but has lots of skits. Granted they're cool but the album doesn't have many songs

New Music: DOOM: "Cellz" [Stream]

The rapper formerly known as MF Doom is back in the mask again, and the outlook for his upcoming BORN LIKE THIS continues to be off-kilter. Now calling himself DOOM, he sets cinematic horns and cartoony spoken-word snippets against his blunted, labyrinthine, deep-voiced prognostications on newest leaked track "Cellz". "Candy corn crap rappers pale by comparison," DOOM announces, calling himself "a bad Samaritan." Also generating excitement: a 40-second snippet of DOOM's new theme song with Ghostface Killah for the upcoming "Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars". You can download the clip here or watch the trailer here. (via Vulture)

I'll review it later but I'll say...it's good. I wasn't really hyped for the album until Cellz leaked, which is fuck awesome. That's probably the best song on the album. The production is weaker than his previous albums. So yea, a bit disappointed overall. That being said it's great to hear DOOM sounding fiery again

Cellz :bow

More than a few songs sound like old left overs. You can tell by DOOM's raspy, almost tired voice, like he sounded on Danger Doom. Like say Angelz, which came out awhile ago (just has different drums on this album).

And of course the old Dilla beats like Lightworks, which is craazy, and the Dimethyltryptamine beat which kicks in half way through Gazzilion Ears.

The more I listen the more I like it

2008 was a bad year for DOOM fans. The entire Doomposter fiasco spiraled out of control, culminating with allegations that he either lip synced or didn't show up to his anticipated Rock the Bells concert; I certainly would not have guessed he'd pull something like that in front of so many esteemed peers like fucking Rakim, Nas, Tribe, etc.

I'm hoping this album is the beginning of good things for 09. My initial concerns about the album

-weak production
-lack of theme/coherence
-recycled songs/beats

Is DOOM being hurt by sampling laws or something? The lack of cartoon skits for the most part, replaced by wack re-enactments, is kinda jarring to me. Maybe Marvel finally found out what was going on lol. Overall the production is meh, with some exceptions like Madlib's Absolutely and DOOM's own Cellz which is my favorite song on the album. I like Dilla's stuff on Gazillion Ear but jeez, recycling Dilla beats is getting very old. And speaking of recycling, reusing Angelz but changing the drums is definitely a head scratching move. It's such a smooth track so the new drums feel out of place.

DOOM has always been an abstract, free associative rapper, but most of his older work still had some semblances of theme. Like the food stuff on MM..Food or the origin stuff on Vaudeville Villain. This album kinda feels like a mess at times. There are still some great songs on the album, and lyrically DOOM's metaphors and similes are still on point. The album is full of quotables. There are a few missteps imo, like Yessir (lazy beat, even lazier Rae appearance)

Batty Boys=funniest song of the year

3.5/5
better than Mouse and the Mask imo

what's he talking about in battyboyz?

its free spirited style were all familiar with, but he's juxtaposing costume heroes as no gayer than what rappers wear nowadays?
add to that his problem with in the closet rappers raising monster rates
and the fact that theyll get aired out eventually?

seems like doom is pro gay. Born like this......HRMMMMMMMMM

Yea that's what I took from it, which is hilarious lol. DOOM going hard on the fruity costumes of super heroes, comparing them to the girly rappers out today more concerned with their wardrobes than their rhymes.

New Clipse (edited)

hmm

I can't decide whether or not I like this... I think it's kinda meh, tbh, but I'm enjoying it nonetheless. I think Kanye killed Clipse lyrically.
