yeah, the game looks like it will be a lot of fun.  My only real problem is that it doesn't seem like you can annihilate buildings.

Wait, you're saying that this is a bad thing? Destruction is destruction, and destruction is fun.

It's probably going to be a mission based game.  Even if it is dumb fun, well, it's dumb fun.  I played Spider-Man Web of Shadows for the same reason (which is actually eerily similar, right down to the dead body surf move and tentacles)

And :bow evilbore :bow2 suddenly I don't feel like I'm the only person who thinks Infamous looks better

Graphically or overall?

Hulk is a known quantity to me, that game was fun. Infamous is on my short list for 09 but I haven't seen too much video on it. Graphically it's obviously better.

The combat and exploration look a lot funner than Infamous.  Especially the combat since you're fighting characteristics change a lot with different forms.

The vehicle and stealth stuff looks accessible but not shallow.

And the graphics aren't bad and there's no lag so it's fine.  It's shaping up to be a good sandbox game.

When people get hyped for one game (like Infamous) they'll end up hating other games that are sort of in the same genre (superpowers/sandbox gameplay).  It's a stupid trend that I see with nearly every game that's worth playing.  Maybe they think that every developer tries the exact same things with their games and so either one game or the other is better.

Oh bore.

You know, you could be looking forward to both Infamous and Prototype....

I don't know what it is with you guys and having to choose one game and shit on the other,

I'm looking forward to both, I was just getting a bit thrown off by all the gaf kids praising Prototype to high heavens.  Honestly, they are different types of games and direct comparisons are a bit weird.  Even a comparison to Crackdown doesn't make sense when in that game, you had to scale a building by climbing it, a bit like how it worked in Assassin's Creed and now Infamous.  Prototype is more like Spider-Man or Hulk games where you just run up a building.

so, um, since I wanted to ask about more than just Prototype compared to inFamous:
RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE, PROTOTYPE THREAD!

One of my friends said Hulk Ultimate Destruction is the best, most pure sandbox experience he's had. When I go back to the US and visit gamestores, I always look for Hulk UD, but have never found it. In a moment of weakness, I purchased The Incredible Hulk, which (a) supposedly follows Hulk UD's formula, but (b) is not by Radical, and (c) is not very good.

Has anyone played both HULK UD -and- Prototype? What about either of those -and- The Incredible Hulk? How are the games different from each other?

Yeah well, I've heard that it's ugly, rigid, boring and often quite irritating, that the controls are lacking, enemies are unimaginatively designed and that the graphics are utterly mediocre. So there.

Playing you when you have all of your powers then starting over!

YAY FUN!

Not a big spoiler (since I have no idea how it happened in the story.   I think it has to do with a tumor or something.) but
spoiler (click to show/hide)
that happens twice in the game.  First there is that intro segment when you are all super strong, then after you upgraded all your attacks and shit, the game takes them away again.  I just got them back after a couple more missions.

Definitely not the most beautiful game in the world especially on the PC but the engine seems solid enough with lots of action going on and simple enough controls to master. I tend to be a fan of Radical Entertainment also.

To be fair, the game isn't ugly at first.  It starts out looking like New York in Spider-Man 2 for the Xbox, then it degrades as the virus spreads and becomes that red mess from up there.  Same thing happened in Web of Shadows.

This game gets really sucky in the last part.  Other than being that brown/red color everywhere, the combat is now having helicopters and tanks pop in to the world and start firing missiles at you non-stop.  (by last part I mean around Mission 24 out of 31, so at least 7 more of this or potentially worse)

Hey, a game with uglier trees than GTA IV. That's impressive.

Prototype's screenshots there are actually looking about the same as the HULK movie game's NYC, which I thought was OK for two years ago. it doesn't break apart very well, but in its pristine state it's not bad.

Prototype is more like Hulk UD than the movie based game was.  Big difference is that you don't cause nearly as much destruction, but you have more varied abilities.

It's not Hulk UD2 if that's what you expect.  Prototype is a lot of fun and I'd say it's worth playing.
(snip)

I never got my hands on Hulk UD, actually. Every time I've tried to find it, it's been sold out. In a moment of weakness, when I heard that the movie tie-in game is "close" to the Hulk UD model, I picked it up. There are so many places where the Hulk movie game just misses being good, I think I know what "close" means now, when I visualize it pronounced with those air-quotes around it.

The game spends so much time encouraging you to jump/fly around, but then forces you to babysit the camera to do it correctly.

There's that "aftertouch" Hulk can do when he's jumping, a gradual left/right rotation. It adds a good sense of in-air control, but while Hulk neatly turns the camera stays facing the same direction. Same goes for pitch: when Hulk's ascending or descending, just a hint of that rotation would be helpful, to get a clearer idea if you're going to be landing on a rooftop and continuing your soaring leaps, or if you're about to smack into a wall.

So many times I've been heading along neatly across rooftops, and the front facing camera suddenly presents me with a fullscreen view of the repeating wall texture, as Hulk has fallen just short of a rooftop lip, and I'm sliding halfway down the face of the building. And even if I can see it coming, there's a moment or two before it registers "grab" to cling to the wall, so I'm forced to freefall. Actually, half the time, the delay between pressing and it actually taking effect is long enough that I assume the input didn't register but it did, so the moment Hulk grabs the wall, the 2nd input registers, releasing the grip and sending me downward again... this could have been solved by automatically grabbing the wall on impact (or removing the delay), but would have even been better served by adding just a tiny funneling action to drag hulk /onto/ the rooftop because it's a decent assumption that it's where the player wants to go.

In short, any game where the player is supposed to be a superhero, it helps if you can make them feel cool instead of faceplanting into a wall. If Prototype looks exactly the same as HULK, but has addressed all these pissant TUNING issues with the controls, it's probably a decent game.

Quote
I just want to find the people who did this to me and make them pay before another innocent person gets hurt.

A helicopter passes below my rooftop vantage point. I pick up an industrial air conditioning unit and heave it at the chopper, missing it entirely. Brakes lock and the injured scream as a packed intersection somewhere below is thrown into chaos.

The helicopter continues on its way, but I pursue. Several blocks and three air conditioners later, I change tactics, gliding through the air and kicking the helicopter to death.

For the better part of an hour, I scour the city for helicopters.

I'm Alex Mercer, and they did this to me. I don't have many memories. I just know that they must be stopped. Now.

I run up the face of the largest building in the city, leap backwards, and let myself fall. The wind assaults me with the force of a tidal wave on a storm-battered shore. My hoodie never wavers. My impact cracks the asphalt in a shockwave that spreads twenty feet in every direction. Muscle and metal alike are ripped apart within this circle, but I am unharmed.

After punching a taxi, I sprint up the way I came to do it all over again. If the inhabitants of New York are smart, they will stay far away from this intersection for the next hour.

All I want is to put an end to the sadistic people that wronged me. I think my sister is in danger.

Now in Central Park, I turn my right arm into a shield made of guts. Sticking to the sidewalks, I plow into a mass of humanity at 100 miles per hour, never slowing in the slightest even as scores of civilians connect with my gut shield with enough force to send their lifeless bodies sprawling through the air.

When the sidewalk comes to an end before a stone wall, I turn around and do it all over again.

I don't think anyone can understand what I'm going through. They did some kind of experiment on me. They had no right. This is about justice.

Disguising myself as a soldier, I slip into a squadron of U.S. Marines unnoticed.

"There!" I bellow, pointing a finger at an old woman walking by. "That's Mercer, he's disguised!"

The soldiers open fire. When the body is inspected, I shrug, then point at a man in a business suit.

"That's Mercer! Right there!"

Still in disguise, in plain view of the soldiers, I run up the side of a building and fall ten stories. After I land, I point at another old woman, identical to the first victim.

"Mercer!"

I run up the wall again as they unload their rifles on another innocent person, then jump off and glide toward a timed race that I see in the distance.

I'm Alex Mercer. All I want is justice.

I stand on a bridge, holding a delivery truck over my head. Three seconds later it's a hundred yards away, sailing through the air over the harbor on an upward trajectory. I grab the first pedestrian I see and throw him at the airborne truck.

They are so far away from my position that they are little more than tiny specks on the horizon. Even so, I'm pretty sure I see them collide.

I'm getting closer to my ultimate goal. I can feel it.

yeah, this game is like a C game.  The missions are mostly stupid and the game is only really awesome towards the middle.  Rent it if you want to play it.  It's pretty short, the side missions are trash and I don't think it will be fun to come back to.

Like, one of the later missions is following a tank for 10 minutes, then at the end you kill the guy in the tank.  So...why did you have to follow it? while it's driving, it even has the option to hijack it, but if you try the game glitches and you just bounce off of it.

The more you guys talk about it, the more I'm thinkin' it sounds like that dumbass HULK movie game. The mission conditions never make logical sense. In some missions, Rick is standing exposed so Hulk puts Rick on his back, and jumps around. If Hulk's hit by missiles, or crushed to the ground by Enclave giants with maces, Rick's OK. He's an inert backpack. Other missions, it's "Hulk, protect my car as I drive to this place." Hey. Bitch. Why don't I just carry you? Or if you love your car that much, why don't I just carry your car?

I just finished a mission which required travel ALL over NYC to get THREE critical items, each of which is needed to cure Banner of the Hulk -- after getting all three items to the gathering point, Enclave troops show up to steal them; I have to make sure they don't get all three. Well, shit, if only one of them is needed for story progression, why did I need to get all three? I blew the mission five times by trying to protect all three of the items, because the story and the actual mission goals were in opposition.

Just started playing this. Kicking the game off with a CG movie showing a highly detailed neighborhood certainly doesn't make the actual game and city seem less ugly.

20 minutes in: it's certainly some game made by the guys that made Hulk UD, only with lots of gore and a much less likable character.

The grunts don't seem to think there is anything strange at all about their commanding officer running around on the walls, leaping across rooftops and dropping 40ft off of the side of a skyscraper.

Also, this last mission with the monsters really sucked. Running up skyscrapers is a bit of fun, but whoever wrote it off as a "lumpy environment" was right. The slicing and dicing feels pretty good, I suppose. I guess if you really like slicing up civilians and soldiers and haven't already played Hulk UD, this might be a fun game.

Driving a tank in this game feels about as exciting as it did in Resistance. The flow of the game being constantly interrupted by very poorly acted/written cut-scenes and drawn out explanations of what's what and why before every sub-mission is also starting to get on my nerves.

I had to choose between picking this up or Red Faction.  I picked Red Faction and I'm glad I did.  Shit blows up better and the multiplayer is actually pretty awesome.

[PROTOTYPE] will be a good $14.99 Target sale game.

Red Faction is plenty better than this, that much is certain. Well, based on a couple of hours of play, we'll see how this develops. Hopping around the environment is a bit of fun, for a few minutes. I haven't enjoyed a single mission so far, and that can't be good news.

If you can't enjoy Red Faction, you should probably stop gaming - you'll never enjoy anything then!
