My mom just came into my room and told me about this. Apparently birds got stuck in the engine? What the shit? How does that even happen?

Glad everyone is okay! I hope no one got frostbite. I can't imagine landing in a river when it's so. fucking. cold. I hope everyone was able to stay dry or mostly dry!

Seriously! The world's largest birds today only have a wing span of less than 10 feet, and those are California Condors. They are virtually extinct in the wild and definitely do not live anywhere near the Hudson River. I imagine there are large cranes and stuff around the Hudson, but seriously, how can a bird cause a plane crash?

to my understanding typically there are bird guards to prevent this.

Bird strikes are unusual, but they do happen! And after takeoff, like in this case, the event can lead to a crash or emergency landing. The bird doesn't have to be gargantuan. A medium size bird can damage a small jet engine enough so the pilots are forced to shut it down. This was an A320, a medium sized two engined plane. At takeoff, the plane is loaded to its heaviest configuration, so loss of one engine will force the pilots to an emergency landing since they might not be able to make the climbout.

Here's a good video of a birdstrike on a 757-200, this strike was right on takeoff so the pilots could do a safe go-around and land on the same runway again.

I saw a video on some show about crashes that showed a plane taking off then crashing and erupting in flames. They found that a bird hod flown into the engine on takeoff. Fucking scary stuff. I have never flown in my life and probly never will.

around a month or 2 ago a group of these large crow looking birds stopped in my neighborhood and perched in the big trees behind my place. their wingspan had to be around 5 ft. it was insane. you could even hear them flap their wings.

my dog just sat there and stared at them for an hour.
