Xbox 360 controllers are poorly-manufactured pieces of shit
« on: January 19, 2009, 04:55:53 PM »
I've already been through two Xbox 360 controllers and now my third controller is going downhill thanks to a sticky "A" button and a wandering left analog stick.  The first two controllers also had wandering left analog sticks (where sometimes it would settle slightly in a specific direction instead of dead center, which is a giant pain in the ass for games with small analog dead zones).

I've calmed down a lot since my NES/SNES days when I'd fling the controller around by the chord when I'd get frustrated, and I'm actual very gentle with my controllers.  I never eat Doritos while I'm playing and I even clean them every once in a while.  I don't remember having this problem with my PS2 or Xbox, and I don't play my other systems enough to run into this problem.

Am I the only one or are other people experiencing the same thing?

no, but ive noticed that the 360 controllers have progressively gone down in quality since launch.  my launch on was the best, it was the heaviest, and the grey plastic area was shiny and obviously of a better material.  the black controller i got over a year ago was worse, lighter and cheaper and they switched to that lighter textured grey piece.  and finally the white one i just got is the lightest and creakiest of them all

Haha, my controller has that wandering issue too. I thought it was just me. My controller would stick slightly up so my character would slowly move forward. It doesn't really bother me, but there are some random spurts where the direction would not respond at all.

I went through about 5 DS2s due to the shoulder buttons sticking in the casing. Never had a problem with the 360 controller in terms of quality, and I've spent far more time on it than any other console.

Never heard of problems like this. With any controller really.

I have 2 controllers since launch, and aside from the awful D Pad on the wireless one, they work flawlessly. That added to the fact i never heard of this problem, it seems to me that maybe you are the one with some goddamn dirty ass troll hands, and should go see a doctor.

I've had the wandering issue before, but as soon as I move the stick it rights itself and doesn't happen again.  Never had a problem otherwise...well, other than the jank d-pad.

yeah, my left analog stick is incredibly loose now.  I wish I could use my S-Controller on the 360.

actually, so far the wii remote was the quickest to get fucked up.  Some dust went in the speaker port and the rumble got fucked up, and this was after a week or so.

My first controller developed wandering stick. I also just got a new one and it's really weird. The Y button takes more pressure to register than the other buttons, and my start button has no click to it (though it works just the same).

I actually thought the pad was pretty much the only piece of 360 hardware that was even close to decent quality but I guess they're shit too. I haven't had any problems either on my 2.5 year old white one or my more recent black one.

I did have the wandering control stick problem on a Wavebird.  And it was the C stick - wtf.

My controllers seems fine although the play and charge kit I got at launch no longer holds a charge. :(

My DS3's sticks squeak though, It can be pretty annoying.

This isn't a 360 troll, but why is it that none of the other companies can figure out how to make an analog stick like Sony? Seriously, it seemed like my DualShock 2 NEVER fucking wore out, and my Dual Shock 3 is holding up quite nicely as well. Meanwhile, the 360 sticks get looser and looser, getting that annoying "phantom moving" syndrome in one direction (specifically up since it's the first direction on the stick to go since it's the most commonly used direction in most games these days)

The worst analog stick award has to go to the sticks on the Gamecube controllers. I think I wore out one controller in less than a month before. Fuck.

You clearly never had an N64 controller.  It was a million times worse than the Gamecube.  One session of Mario Party could wear it out.

Sony might have the most reliable controllers (though I did have to replace my DS2 twice), but why are they so poorly designed?  The left analog stick is still in the wrong place, L2/R2 suck, and the analog sticks are a huge step down from the 360's sticks.

Aside from the shitty black/white buttons, the Xbox Controller S is the best combination of design and reliability I've ever seen in a controller.

I agree that the Xbox S-controller is the pinnacle of game controllers.  If it was wireless and added two extra buttons on the top, it would be even better, but Microsoft had to change it to the still great, but not nearly as good, 360 controller.

And the L1 and R1 buttons are significantly superior to the 360 equivalents, as are the face buttons and the d-pad. Let's face it, this generation isn't about anyone giving anyone the complete package.

Nope.  It still sucked.  All Nintendo games would've been better on the Xbox-S or even the DS2.  The only thing they got sort of right was the analog stick placement.  Everything else, including the stupid triggers, sucked.

well, the extremely limited c-stick did work well in assigning different tasks to different directions and not only limiting it to camera control.  Things like Smash Bros or Zelda games had different tasks for left/right and up/down.  But it still was bad for most other types of games.  It actually felt more like a digital stick than an analog.

Meh, I liked it. It also had a great feel to it. Too light and slim for some, but I've got pretty girly hands. But it was definitely not intended for games other than Nintendo's own. It's like the PS3 of controllers, or something.

Sony's DS2 & DS3 controllers so poorly designed.  The left analog stick is still in the wrong place, L2/R2 suck, and the analog sticks are too tall and round on the top which is terrible for thumb traction...... overall they are a huge step down from the 360's sticks.

On a related note, I got some sort of cover for the thumbstick with my Fragfx, had a concave, textured surface, and I sort of wish I had two more to use on the regular controller. Anyone know where to get them?

The 360 bumpers are great, I've always detested L1 and R1 with their curved surface and analog sponginess.  The Sony face buttons have always been too big and spaced too far apart for my liking.  I like the 360's better but would prefer a flat-surfaced buttons.

As for the d-pad, the 360's is terrible for precision, but the PS one is uncomfortable for me.  Nintendo's d-pads are awesome this gen, but I rarely get to use the damn things.

Are the face buttons on the 360 even pressure sensitive? And the bumpers are plain shit, really.

The Wii controller(s) are hot. Then again, they had better be hot.

They aren't pressure sensitive, but it was probably a good idea that they didn't make them that way.  The only games that really use it these days are Metal Gear and an alternate scheme for racing games.  I can only recall Dead or Alive 3 having analog button support on the original Xbox.  On the DS3/Sixaxis, with the exception of start/select/ps, everything is pressure sensitive.  Even the d-pad is analog, but support for that is even more rare than face buttons.

And while a lot of people hate on the Dual Shock controller, I think it is just under the 360 controller.  I think it's a huge improvement from the Dual Shock 2, which made FPS game borderline unplayable.  Although, I did need to get those conclave triggers that cost $3 to make the L2/R2 triggers comfortable.

DOAX on the Xbox used the analog buttons too.  I tried it for quite a few matches but didn't like it.  I hate analog buttons especially for an accelerator because I end up pressing really hard since there's no indication of when you're pressing at 100%.  I was really pleased they got rid of analog buttons on the 360.

I love the 360 bumpers, but when I first got the controller I would accidentally bump them with my index fingers when pressing the triggers.  I'm not a four finger shoulder button person unless it's SSX.

The Wii buttons and d-pad are my favourites.  Such a waste. :-\

Wipeout HD without pressure sensitive buttons  :-X Although, I don't mind the lack of sensitivity as much as I dislike the shape and feel of the buttons. Feel like pressing petrified jellybeans. That was pretty much the only weakness of the S, as far as I'm concerned. I didn't even mind the black and white buttons, and absolutely prefer them to the bumpers.

See, this is why we need these two companies to work together in the future.

problems with X360 pad : the damn digital pad is garbage, the Y button tends to get a little sticky. And that's on all of them.

problems with PS3 pad : DS3 - the one i got is complete garbage, the right analogue gets stuck and the X button gets trapped. First issue with any PS pad really, so i'm pretty sure i got a duff one. Insert moan here about the shitty triggers - if feels so wrong that FPS's default to using bumpers for shoot and the triggers for weapon change too :/

I'd love a nice clicky digital nub like the Neo Geo Pocket :click :click :click.
