Man this is the 2nd or 3rd time it has happened to me. Sometimes, a game during hype launch, doesn't quite deliver for me, somehow, i'm so blinded by what people write about it that i don't look at it straight.

I remember starting playing gears 2, and the first levels being like "Man what a piece of shit", and then it got better.

Now, holy shit, i just installed the game, and went for a spin, and goddamn man, this thing is fucking awesome  It really does feel like a interactive big budget Michael Bay movie. The dialog is cheesy but fun, the action is off the charts, the 5.1 is bringing my room to its knees, the music sounds exactly like some "The Rock" epic kind of shit, it's full of badasses and explosions.

I'm in love with this game. If COD was the best attempt at recreating a high octane Tom Clancy story, and if Mafia was the best attempt at something like the Godfather, and if MGS was like the best attempt at Ninja Scrool sci fi, this thing is like fucking Michael Bay all the way, some sort of cross between bad boys 2 and whatever man, just balls to the wall son.

Damn. I think i'm gonna start doing this more often, not playing games right in the middle of the hype explosion.

My friend convinced me to buy this game, and so far I'm not liking it at all. I bought the original way back when it came out (along with my 360 and plasma TV), played through it and had fun but who knows how much of my enjoyment came from playing one of the best looking games of the time on a 42" plasma. But this new one, seems like a total rehash of the first game, with even more cheeseball dialogue and more story/cinematics that take itself MUCH too seriously. The graphic sheen has even worn off on me, as I'm sick of UE3 unless you do something real creative with it (like Mirror's Edge). Not to mention I'm finding the movement really chuggy, especially after the smoothness of COD4.

I would've been better off taking my $60 I spent on this and put it towards the AC Blu-Ray/FFXIII demo

The pace is slower, but there is nothing wrong with the frame rate, which is rock solid through 99% of the game.  You're just used to a different pace.  Complaining about the story/cinematics is silly since you know going in they don't matter to you and can easily and quickly be skipped.  And it's not like any cinematic is longer than a minute or so.  Also, for a game that doesn't really have many new mechanics over the first game, I was surprised at how much it did NOT feel like a rehash.  It was bigger, better, and much more varied than the first game.

With that said, you should be playing co-op and Horde for maximum enjoyment.  Ignoring these modes is like playing L4D by yourself.

Yeah...I've barely even tried it outside of some private matches and even with friends, it's not as fun as it should be.  There's a reason why I don't talk about multi when I fellate Gears 2.

I really like it as well.  I preferred the first game during my initial playthrough, but I've grown to prefer Gears 2.  The campaign is fantastic and horde mode is incredible.  I still don't really care for standard multiplayer, though.

Maybe it's just not your kind of game.

It plays great, looks great, sounds great. The action is just amazing. Imo it's the same kind of leap from God Of War 1 to God Of War 2. You might say it's a rehash, to me it's a sequel. If you wanted a different game, you would get something with another name, not the same name with a number added, that's what sequels are, the previous, but bigger/better. That's what God Of war 2 was, and that's what Gears of War 2 is.

Regarding U3, i don't see how it affects anything here, the game has amazing art imo. I liked Mirrors Edge graphics, and prince of persia, and going from those to Gears 2 doesn't affect me in the slightest, as Gears 2 owes nothing to those in terms of art design. It just might not be your cup of tea.

I can deal with that, but some of the segments require you to be absolutely perfect for too long in order to get a checkpoint. I'm up to the part in chapter 4 (I think) where you are on that cable car and you have to shoot the Reavers that swoop by. You don't get a turret and if you don't kill every one on their first pass you instantly die.



edit: lol, it appears their multiplayer patch finally hit today. I guess I have to take back what I said about that. Unless this update is not comprehensive enough, then I'm REALLY done with it

The game has much more "unique" situations (action set pieces), much more varied environments, more enemies, and a couple of gameplay additions like using locusts as shields.

If you are a gamer and you say they are exactly the same, then you don't know what exactly the same means, and if you are a developer, then i worry if you understand what a sequel is, but who am i kidding...sequels mean the previous game was successful in some way.

I'm not saying that Gears of War 2 is the Pro Evolution Manager to Gears of War Simpsons Hit and Run, i'm saying that Gears of War 2 is the 2 to Gears of War 1. You know, it's a sequel.

The leap between Gears 1 and 2 is at least on par with the leap from God of War 1 to God Of war 2.

I did Insane by myself, there was only like 2 choke points or something. If you think Gears is hard go play a real mans videogame, like Stranglehold or Bionic Commando Rearmed on Super Hard or something. Then you'll actually have some difficulty to complain about

I played through Army of Two twice and while it's a much worse game overall, it does do the co-op thing a little bit better, especially the mechanic where one of you rages to draw fire and the other one turns invisible.
