What's the best point and shoot camera?
« on: January 22, 2009, 12:08:26 AM »
I got my dad the Sony T500 and was really impressed by it. The HD video recording is amazing:

But I am also considering Nikon and Canon. Portability and IQ are big factors, price kinda isn't. Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks in advance!

If price is no issue, get the best Canon.

Canon are pretty much the best in my opinion - great sensors, good features and very user-friendly (all as a rule of thumb anyway).  Panasonic are also well-regarded among compacts although I haven't used one myself.  I don't really know much about Nikon's compacts.

www.dpreview.com is the best resource around if you feel like researching.

I was just looking and they've done some group tests (under 'Reviews/Previews').  They could be useful.

Enthusiast Compacts: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/Q408enthusiastgroup/page13.asp
Premium Compacts: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/Q408premiumgroup/page12.asp
Slim/Ultra Compacts: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/Q408slimgroup/page15.asp
Super Zooms: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/Q109superzoomgroup/page16.asp

Canon are consistently in the top groups which is quite telling I guess.  Panasonic are up there too.
