I know I said I wouldn't post here anymore, but this is important.

deamentia on GAF, who used to work for Hudson while he posted there (and was my roommate back in 1998) is now involved in a murder/suicide:

Jason Montes, 33, of Sacramento was found dead by police at the home of his estranged wife in Concord, California on Sunday, January 11. His wife Serena Montes, 25, was fatally wounded at the location. According to police, Montes had called a friend to say he had shot his wife and planned to kill himself. The gun belonged to his father.

Montes, a science fiction and video game devotee, joined Ultra Game Players then published by Imagine Media, in the mid-1990s. According to a resume posted on Facebook, he went on to work for IGN, The Official PlayStation Magazine at Ziff and Prima among others. More recently, he worked in marketing for Hudsonsoft, before pursuing a career in web design and animation.

Serena Montes, a pastry chef, met Montes online and were wed in 2007. However, the two parted last year. Montes had recently filed for bankruptcy protection.

I'll break my self-imposed silence for this.

Jason Montes was the first person I ever met in the game industry.

Back in 1996, debaser and I wrote a piece of fanfic about Kabuki Jo and Plant 42, winning an Ultra Gameplayers Online contest. Jason and I chatted a few times via e-mail, and when my brother came out to L.A. that summer for a music program, we arranged for me to come by the office and meet him as long as I was out here (and to pick up our prizes!). I got to meet everyone working on UGP and Next Gen, which for a game-addled 16-year-old was, like, I dunno. Meeting the Beatles at the height of Beatlemania? I wanted to be Next Gen when I grew up. I'm still somewhat disappointed that I - and my industry - are not.

Anyways, it's a goddamn shame, and considering where I am today, I'm more than a little distressed.

P.S. My mom totally freaked him out when she was able to name all the Final Fantasy VII characters on his desk.

A lot of people actually knew the guy. Probably hard to comprehend the situation.

The main defense posts were by people who knew him only by his hudson stuff. None of those who knew him seemed to get defensive of the guy really.
