RE5 demo
« on: January 26, 2009, 10:21:18 AM »
It's out on Live, not sure about aidstation. Online co-op and singleplayer, which is essentially co-op with a bot. I don't know, the aiming felt slow and the chainsaw dude could only be stopped at seemingly random times. It's been awhile since I played RE4, but I seem to remember that the chainsawers stopped when you shot them in the face? well, that's not the case here. I had to empty over half a clip in order to stop the chansawing african. And there was hardly enough ammo in the demo. The co-op stuff seemed cool, and you can assign pickups to your partner and whatnot.

There's plenty of ammo in the demo. Kill the random villagers, they drop a lot.

Who wants to guess the ratio on console sales.

Gonna go 3:1 for Xbox 360. It will sell like hotcakes... PS3 version will sell more than Killzone.

The demo defaults on Type D. It's weird, I didn't know which I preferred; the RE4 tank controls or these controls. It's like the game's schizo, it doesn't know if it wants to be progressive and go GearsofWar, or keep the tank.

It don't make no sense
but gears is better than killswitch (and deadspace).

deadspace is meat corridors and 4 hours too long.

Dead Space owes a huge debt to RE4, but improved on it greatly, just like Gears owes a huge debt to kill.switch, but improved on it greatly.  Gears 2 and Dead Space aren't really that similar.

And I beat Dead Space twice.  Even knowing what I'm doing with upgraded weapons, it's NOT a four-hour game.  First time through it's at least 8-10 hours, which should be perfectly fine for us working adults with families.

I share Cohen's sentiments about Dead Space's length. I found myself just wanting the game to end during the last 20% of the game. But I guess that's an improvement over RE4, which I thought was about 8 hours too long. Both are good games, just a grind at the end.

at least RE4 was constantly changing shit up, even if there were a few too many plain old ganado fights in the last third.  Dead Space was just the same fucking thing all the way through.  Damn near every level looked the same, and there were so few enemies that they actually had the nerve to use retextured enemies later on.  The combat itself was pretty good, but the crazy repetition combined with the same old System Shock setup of empty scary ship with lots of chat logs sunk the game for me.

Dead Space's last level is horrible, made slightly less so by a cool-looking, but dull final boss.  A big poop stain on the whole thing.

I loved the last level and hope that the sequel has more levels like that in the sequel where you're not just inside a ship.

I agree that Dead Space's last level was traditional Western design where instead of bothering to design a last level they just throw huge waves of every enemy from the game at you over and over and then at some point so "ok, you're good; go fight a boss and watch the credits".

But I cannot agree with crazy Genghis and his sentiment that clunky RE5 demo with flawed gameplay design decisions off the bat is somehow more compelling than the polished and fun Dead Space.

Man this game must be utter shit, if people say it's even worse than Dead Space.

Dead Space was a tech demo, a boring ass, repetitive, "Will this shit end already, goddamn, sick of this game", piece of crap.

You could say the same about Bioshock.

Both games worked because of the atmospheric adventure.  Bioshock did a better job with more varied locations, but DS did a good job too.

I don't understand all this hate about RE4's escort section. Ashley never got in your way at all, and from what I recall you didn't even have to escort her for that much of the game.

:bow Resident Evil 4 :bow2

Also, I read on 1up that the U.S. demo is 3 levels... wasn't the J-demo only two?

Bioshock was very different from Dead Space imo. From the weapons, to the enemies, to the powers, to the locations, story....it was much more than the one trick pony that Dead Space is.

I think we're all buying it day1 because we love the series.

Hopefully the full game is better than the demo.  I've been keeping myself on media blackout so at least the "exploring mysterious areas" should keep me hooked if the gameplay doesn't.

I already tried the demo co-op, was not impressed. You might as well be playing two separate games. You each just stand there and mow down the zombies. Sometimes the game flashes HIT X TO SAVE YOUR FRIEND and you do a QTE and then you go back to shooting.

When you do co-op in something like Gears you're calling to each other to take position with a sniper, or to throw a grenade on your position, or to kill the guy who's trying to beat you down. In this game it feels pre-baked, like it makes no difference if your partner is a CPU or a human.

This game is way too big for that.

It's gonna be like a 15 to 20 hour game.

A game like Gears can be nicely played Co Op, because it takes like 6 to 8 hours.

Please bring back the single player, no escort experience to Resident Evil.  My favorite games in the series are RE1 and RE2 since they focused on the isolated single player experience.
