Chinese GB Micro clone thing

This thing's sweet. It looks like a GB Micro but it has a bunch of emulators, video and music playback. I want one.

Gizmondo is trying to come back as an "open source" platform. It's wierd to see hardware manufacturers openly relying on piracy as a business model.

I'm probably the only guy in here nerdy enough to still carry a GB Micro + flashcart filled with emulators and stuff around in my bag.  :-[

All the emulators are there, you just put the ROMs in. I think it comes with 4GB built in memory, with expansion for SD cards.

I'd love to jump on one of these devices since a portable emulation machine is the best thing ever (and the only saving grace from me dumping the PSP into the garbage). However, the PSP fits the bill quite nicely as a portable emulator and I wouldn't want to throw cash on a slimmer device if it isn't up to par with what the PSP can do. So I'm curious how this and the GP2x Wiz stacks up in terms of emulation accuracy.

The Wiz comes out on March 6th.  The specs are superior to the PSP, and it's completely open source so people will be able to harness the power easily.  The previous GP system had very strong emulators (I think that the MAME emulation has yet to be surpassed), and with the Wiz being much stronger, it's logical to assume that it'll have excellent emulator support.

It also has a nice OLED screen so you can play it in the sunlight, if you care about that stuff.

the Wiz looks cool, but it seems like it's a big bigger than I would want it to be.  Plus it looks like it has 2 d-pads instead of face buttons.  The pandora looks like it could potentially be great, it's still big and all, but what with what is promised, it could be worth it.

This Dingoo thing seems great.  I expect it to have some crippling aspect like a 2 hour battery or something, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of info about it out there, especially no place to actually purchase it.

I think I like The Wiz best.  I'll keep my eye on OpenPandora, but the layout doesn't look optimal for me.  From a brief look, I feel that the inclusion of a keyboard made them make compromises in the placement of the game portion.

How big is The Wiz?  It doesn't look that big.

The Wiz is about the size of a Gameboy Micro.

The Wiz does not have two D-pads.  Those are old prototype models which unfortunately seem to be the majority of the pictures of it on the Internet.  The released version will have traditional face buttons.

The Pandora is unquestionably more powerful than the Wiz, but it's also much more expensive.  If price isn't an issue, go crazy with it, I can't justify spending so much on it though.

I think that is the final model.  Notice how the buttons are separate, but it still doesn't look as good as what this Chinese Dingoo thing is doing.  It is smaller than I expected

Not sure if that was because of his camera or something because the action seemed to move at a smooth clip anyway. Not expecting 100% full emulation on this thing, but like I said it may at least beat what's on the PSP right now.

I've got the flashcard already, thanks to one of your earlier threads. I hadn't seen much on the emu's for it, and had assumed they weren't that good. Sounds like I'll have to do some homework first then, although I'll admit that part of my wanting this thing is "shiny new toy" syndrome.

This thing looks like a piece of shit.  Just wait for the Wiz, it's more expensive but much more powerful and will likely run things much better.  Hell, they've already got a working build of Quake running on prototype units.

Eh, they also have an early build of Quake 2 running on the Wiz prototypes.  I'm going to assume that it took them awhile to port Quake properly on the DS (although I have no idea).  Once the Wiz actually launches, there's probably going to be a lot of power that people are going to play with.  Since it's open source, there'll be no roadblocks to limit the potential of the system.

originally it was talked about being $75.  Although this site doesn't have shipping, so it might balance out.

yeah, that's how I saw it.  The mic he was using on the camera could have been shitty.

Bump -- a friend gave me his GP2X Wiz :hyper

Pros:
- Amazing screen, it is OLED and destroys all the other portable screens around
- Controls aren't as bad as I thought, much better than the original GP2X
- Selection of emulators/apps covers the basics.

Cons:
- Shit support. Nobody's writing new stuff for the thing anymore it seems. All of the devs are looking into the Pandora now (if that thing's ever going to be released). Though the MAME, SNES, Game Boy and Genesis emulators are okay; that's all I need I think.
- It looks embarrasingly tacky with the red bezel and chrome-trimmed buttons.
- Screen tearing on some apps (though I think the latest firmware release fixes this).
- Boot up takes foreverrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

I like it overall, it's pocketable and should keep me entertained between breaks and stuff.

might as well mention that I actually bought this Dingoo thing (what this thread was about).  Turned out to be pretty alright, got better when they got linux on it.  Haven't been following too much since then.

Also, that Pandora device is coming out soon.  It's looking pretty solid.

What?  There's new programs and emulators being written for it on a regular basis.

Every Wiz owner should have this site bookmarked to keep up with the scene: http://gp2xwiz.funurl.com/

The Wiz scene is hardly dead!  Lots of the devs are waiting for the FunGP site to open up (along with releasing the proper devkit) before they put a lot of effort into big projects.  The occasional contests are a good way to get some good games out there, and the emulators are pretty damn good right now so there's little reason to keep updating them (although progress is still being made a lot of them).  What exactly do you want from the Wiz?  The official Korean games are also coming out soon, and they seem pretty interesting.

Sure, I guess the Dingoo "scene" might seem more active, just as the Wii gets more overall software than the PS360.  Doesn't matter when the majority of projects are underpowered and rather pointless.  It's not necessarily a good thing when the emulators have to constantly be updated to try to achieve the efficiency that the Wiz has had from the beginning.
