The 360 version has had tons of players online in ranked since it came out last week.  I just tried a ranked match on PS3 and no one is available.  I am beginning to feel like double-dipping on this game was a stupid idea.

Hey, send me a friend request so I can kick your ass all over play some friendly matches!  :hyper

We will never play together.

Want to answer my prior question, though - of all the characters, who has the easiest super to pull off?

Hey, fuck you too buddy.   :-\ :'(

What do you mean "who has the easiest super to pull off?"  Most characters' supers are all done the same way!  It's either gonna be two quarter-circle forward motions, charge back, forward, back, forward, 360 motions (Zangief), or charge db, df, db, uf (Guile, Vega).

Is it possible the PS3 controllers can get interference from other devices?  I shut off my wife's laptop and now the pad works fine.  ???

So the pad went back to being fucked up after I turned the laptop back on.  And turning it off again didn't "fix" it this time.  Dunno what to do now.  The Mad Catz pad is perfect for SF4 and other controllers I tried just don't work as well to me.  I think it's back to 360 for now.

PS3 :lol

And lyte, I like playing the game, but I'm not sure I'd like getting my ego bruised!

S'good practice to play others, mang.  Plus you're gonna get your ass kicked whether you like it or not if you play online matches.   :P

I got both, therefore I am qualified to answer:

STFU fatty. It's the exact same game.

Well, except for the fact that the PS3 versions switches to some weird resolution on occasion, has no AA, and most importantly has shittier online.  Add to that the install needed to get the load times down to the same level as the 360, and online is even WORSE since you get distinguished mentally-challenged fellows who didn't install, so pile on the waiting times!

No, i'm saying the PS3 verison has a controllre that is actually playable.

It has a better D-PAD, sure.  But the bottom line is, you want to play this game right, you NEED a joystick or suitable fighting pad on either system.  I am having a terrible time with the PS3 controller, and I am fine with it for everything else.   This game's use of two or three buttons together (for throws, focus attacks, ultras, and some special moves) means you NEED a better layout than either stock pad can give you.  Period.

I dunno, the game looks crappy regardless AA or super resolution or not.  I mean it animates well, but I'm surprised Capcom isn't doing a Wii port since the visuals wouldn't take much of a hit.

Online is always better on X360, but I can't say I've had any lag playing people on the PS3 even when the bars are low, so it's perfectly acceptable.

I hate be one of those "shoto scrubs" that people over at GAF complain about, but Ken has always been my favorite character to use. I played some guy online and beat him six times in a row. It's not like I'm good or anything, but I wondered why he didn't log off, he just kept coming at me and getting killed.

It's more detailed than it seems, and the animation is amazing.  And having seen this game squished into a non-HD 4:3 cab in the arcades, it ain't pretty that way.   :lol  I think they could do a scaled-down version too.  Fuck Wii though, I'd want a PSP version.

Is there any reason you got this on PS3 over 360?  Controllers?

but you can set a shoulder button to do those things

They are not as responsive as they should be, ESPECIALLY the triggers.  I am making due with the standard six axis right now by using the two shoulder buttons for medium kick and punch.  It's responsive enough that I can get out the focus attack every time when I need it.  The triggers are set to 3P and 3K.  I find it easy enough to do 3K with just the face buttons and shoulder button, and 3P works well enough when I need it (for who I play that's pretty much just Zangief).

But I am still having a more difficult time playing it with the standard pad versus the Mad Catz pad, no question.  I am still winning but losing a lot more life due to fuck-ups with the controller...when I want to do a move in the middle of a match, sometimes it won't come out as easily as it does with the fight pad.  Add lag and it creates problems.

Pad or stick preferences aside, SF4 NEEDS a six button face layout.  It's just not meant for triggers/shoulder buttons.  You can't set everything to one button because you NEED to be able to do 3P, 3K, throw, and focus attack easily.  That leaves you with two extra buttons, best served for 3P and 3K, on a standard controller.

In some of the previous SF home ports, they simplified things and made it so you only needed two buttons instead of three to do moves like Zangief's lariat, but they can't do that now because of EX attacks.  I do wish that they took a page out of HD Remix and simplified some moves to make it easier to play with a standard pad.  This and the lack of any kind of real training mode (it doesn't show you how to do anything, not even demos in the challenge levels, WTF?) are my biggest complaints with the game.  (Next would be the lack of new characters)

Seth is pretty fucking cheap at times, and at other times, he's really easy.

You just gotta figure out which attacks take him down.  There's always a pattern that works for everybody, and may just be basic punch and kick stuff, no specials.  For example I am not a Dhalsim player and had the HARDEST time beating him.  Just wanted to clear it with everyone to get Seth.  Anyway, here's what worked:

Round 1- Spam the shit out his hard punch spear (down and punch), land and immediately do headbutt (back and hard punch).  Worked every time, I was perfecting Seth's cheap ass.

Round 2- This is where it took me a bunch of tries.  In the end?  Spam standing and jumping hard punches, and hard kicks.  Dhalsim can also dash right under his Sonic Booms.  The end.  I beat the game with 'Sim the first time when I got the PS3 version today.   :D

I hate be one of those "shoto scrubs" that people over at GAF complain about, but Ken has always been my favorite character to use. I played some guy online and beat him six times in a row. It's not like I'm good or anything, but I wondered why he didn't log off, he just kept coming at me and getting killed.

There's nothing wrong with using Ryu or Ken if you play them WELL.  It's the guys that just pick them and do nothing but FB FB FB FB FB FB FB DP FB FB FB DP SWEEP SWEEP SWEEP JUMP KICK SWEEP DP FB FB FB FB that people are hating on.  It's boring as fuck fighting them, and if they're low-ranked (likely have 0 BP), you don't get jack shit for beating them once you have enough BP in ranked.  I only enjoy it when it's some trash-talking distinguished mentally-challenged fellow that you just murder, and watch as they scream and bitch the whole time.   :lol

But one definite weakness with Ryu and Ken, perhaps more than any other character, is that because they are so popular, they are also much more predictable.

For you guys just getting into this game or back into fighters after a long time, one piece of advice I can give you that will work WONDERS against these "shoto scrubs" is to simply NOT JUMP.  Just walk up to them and be amazed as they do endless dragon punches, which you will block or avoid, leaving room to punish them for this over and over and OVER again.  It's uncanny that after all these years, some people just cannot fathom another player not jumping into their "invincible" dragon punch.

Pretty much everyone I know around in RL and would actually enjoy playing against online got the PS3 version, so yeah.  The controller thing is nice for 2p too.

Though really, after I spent a couple hours unlocking characters I realized I was bored playing the cpu and for me personally fighting random people online is kinda boring, so I put the game away and went back to playing other stuff.  I'll still play it once or twice a week against local friends offline 2p or online 2p, but VF really has killed my interest in other fighting games :|  It's the only game where I enjoy 1p because of the strong and varied AI's plus all the costumes and constant money/item gaining for your guy + challenges and the item system + costumes makes online w/strangers just as fun.

I just played some matches against Haunts (he's the one doing the guide for 1up); he kicked my ass expected (his Sagat is BRUTAL.  BRUTAL!!), but I shocked myself with seven wins against his 16.   :lol  Anyway, he's been playing the home version for about three months now, and he said the general opinion is that Gouken and Seth really aren't much (Seth in particular kinda sucks; don't be expecting to do massive damage like the boss version does when you unlock him) and probably won't be banzored by the hardcore, so whiney tourneyfag worshippers (y'know, the guys who take everything said on the internets as gospel yet never actually go to or play in tourneys) might not be bitching about using them online.  Haven't come across any Seth players yet, now that I think about it.

Did you guys get into Street Fighter Alpha 3?  I ask because it seems like a lot of people are drawn to SF4 for the "SF2 factor," even though Alpha 3 did the same thing about 10 years ago, having all the characters from SF2, and even SF2-style game play mode settings...

Alpha 3 rocked because it had like 8,000 characters which was amazing for the time.  Plus the alpha series had a lot of interesting originals like Cody, Gen, Rose, Adon, Sodom, Birdie, Rolento.  Even Charlie, like Remy, was a more interesting Guile.  Also I liked how Alpha introduced having multiple supers to choose from instead of being stuck with one predictable one.  Not a fan of how SFIV went back to one for 99% of it's characters.

SFIV's roster is a good size but too many familiars and Gouken is another shoto.   :punch

Alpha 3 is one of my all-time favorite games, period.  Alpha in general, really (yes, even the original).  I never got into SF3 very much; I loved that they started over with brand new characters (and I wish Ryu and Ken had stayed CUT like originally planned), but I was never a fan of a lot of the 3rd Strike designs and just didn't really enjoy the parry system.  2nd Impact is probably the highlight of that series for me.  I had an arcade board for it briefly and played the shit out of it, but kind of lost interest when 3rd Strike came along.  I love using Chun but I hated what they did to her in 3s.  So boring to use.  Hugo was fun to use and so was Elena, but it just didn't grab me like the other Street Fighters did.  I'll take SF2 or Alpha over SF3 any day.

SFIV's roster is a good size but too many familiars and Gouken is another shoto.   :punch
