Tell me about House of the Dead Overkill
« on: February 05, 2009, 05:13:56 PM »
I see people hyping it up as the first real Wii game worth owning since No More Heroes a year ago.  Why is this one good when there hasn't been a good HoTD since 2 and Wii controllers are inferior to real light guns?

Someone explain.

I've got my pre-order in and I'll be in a better position to discuss it at length next week.

I put money down for it because I'm manic about light gun shooters and this does appear to be a fine one.  Its playable as a real light gun game, and uses a similar calibration method as was seen in Sega's excellent HOTD2&3 package on the Wii.  Honestly, that was all I needed to know going into it.

from the Eurogamer review
Quote from: EuroGamer says its 8/10
Most of the levels are dense and interesting enough to survive plenty of replays. And they'll have to - Overkill is maybe three hours long, an epic in light-gun terms, but small beer in anyone else's. Headstrong is well aware that this isn't an arcade cab, however, and it has made a plethora of clever concessions aimed at extending the game's longevity and accessibility, turning in the ultimate smart-casual console blaster in the process.

Rather than eking more out of a short game by ramping up the challenge (and so the frustration for the non-hardcore), Headstrong has surprisingly decided to make the Story Mode a pushover. It's fairly forgiving, with infinite continues - but every continue costs you half your score. Score earns cash, which buys new guns and upgrades for the game's small but thunderous arsenal, which will take a couple of playthroughs to complete.

Buying continues with points is a great piece of design, simultaneously generous and motivating. You can also choose to add more enemies to any level in Story Mode to add variety, challenge and scoring opportunities. But the real carrot - and the answer to any light-gun veterans who might be questioning the game's hardcore credentials by now - is the Director's Cut, unlocked when you complete Story Mode. This is an extended run through the entire game, with new sections, different routes, tougher enemy patterns - and a strict three-continue limit per level. At a stroke, it more than doubles the game's lifespan.

Still not sure that Overkill represents good value? Then there's an achievement system (offering meaningless memorabilia unlocks instead of gamerpoints, but still), three decent mini-games that support four players, both campaigns playable with two of course, and an unlockable dual-wield mode for a single-player if you complete the Director's Cut. For a simple on-rails shooter, it's a handsome package; the only serious omission for a score-attack game is of course online leaderboards, but that's hardly Headstrong's fault.
oh man, that all sounds a little too awesome.  Consider me properly hyped for this.

Fuck, I hope that's not true :( Based on what little I've read of the game, everyone seemed to praise it, but that could be crazy Wii fanbois, no way to know for sure as I don't keep tabs on GAFfers/sites and their system loyalties.

The only real previews that talk about it mention early bits where scrub enemies stand around as you find ways to kill them multiple times (sign, tire, spike wall, etc.).  Don't know if that will hold throughout the entire game, but at least in the trailer they show enemies in the Road Rash segments fighting back, same with the boss battles.

I doubt it will be as good as God Hand, but it should still be fun unless something goes horribly wrong, like Tenchu 4 and shitty controls.

I read "shake controller for special kills" and wrote MadWorld off, although i'll still by it.  House of the Dead should be decent, though.  It's fucking shooting zombies.

Have you played Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles? they managed to fuck it up.

Eurogamer gave Umbrella Chronicles a 7/10? wow

Umbrella Chronicles is the worst light gun game I've ever played.  The way they made it ridiculously hard as hell so you had to GRIND old levels for better grades to get better weapons to make later levels more beatable is PADDING IN A LIGHTGUN GAME which is totally inexcusable IMO.  Plus the levels and enemies weren't even that good and the aim wasn't perfect.

It's really hard to make a light gun game so bad that I won't even bother finishing it.  RE UC did that.  I think I got to like RE2 or something and bailed cause I'd already spent like 8-10 hours and still wasn't anywhere near finished.

Madworld was being demoed. demoed. Its common practice to tone down the difficulty when providing the first hands on.

The only bad thing about Overkill will be its occassionaly wobbly framerate and bad dialouge, but the developers of Overkill did make Geometry Wars Galaxies, probably one of the objectively best games on wii.

Hey, the Wii has...uh...it's got um, what's that...oh yeah!  No wait, it's got uh...um...er...

No really, 2008 had Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom, Tenchu 4, Oneechanbara (lolz), and Samurai Spirits Rokuban Shoubu.  Plus Smash, Warioland Shake, and Mario Kart if you endless Nintendo rehashes.  That's more than I would have expected from it.   :P

Of course all those third party games were Japan-only releases, and out of them, two are available on other platforms (Tecnhu 4 and Samurai Spirits) and Oneechanbara is just a waggle version of the PS2/XBox 360 releases, so really it just got TvC.

So never mind I guess.  Carry on!

I remember the God Hand demo being fuck awesome when i played it.  fuck awesome.  I want to believe, but waggly crap :(

The reason to have faith is because it's still Clover.  The reason to be worried is the Wii and no Mikami.  It is still the Wii game I'm most looking forward to.

So frame freezes when using certain weapons are problems.  I'll just pretend thats intentional.

Game received an 8 in Edge.
Tenchu gets 6 and Deadly Creatures a 5. So we have the cases of average games getting hyped for the wii on other sites because...you know... and the actual standout.
You guys fail as the proud nerds you claim yourselves to be if you let Overkill fail.

They gave Let's Tap and 8 though and the game is not very good (I wanted to love it!).  Let's Tap is very much a 6.5/10 on the IGN scoring system.

Edge is really weird a lot of the time.  They're almost as random as Famitsu IMO.

I would like to see one review that shat on REUC praise HotD Overkill, then I can start looking forward to it.

You probably don't like minigame collections. Edge's philosophy is usually to rate a game on how well it succeeds at what its trying to accomplish.  So they give points to Let's Tap based on it being a minigame fest with good presentation and unique approach to the controls.
Their 9 for No More Heroes completely dumbfounds me. There is so much objectively bad aspects of that game.  Horrible framerate, overworld, controls, combat...UGHH.

edit: And famitsu isnt THAT random.  Will the game sell alot? Is it coming from a big publisher who has moneyhats? If the first two are fulfilled and the game is shit then you can expect at least straight 7s.
