Ideally, you would have been very young.

This should be good for a laugh. I was just reminiscing about how when I first played King's Quest on a PC it seemed incredible to me. Like a painting come to life, compared to what I was playing at the time.

I thought the leaked Doom 3 alpha was insane when I first saw it, but it wasn't the first thing.  I honestly don't remember what the first was.  I know Mario 64 also did when I first played it.

It had a girl that turned into a tiger, a man made of fire, an alien that that's liquid...holy shit!

My brother came home talking about having played this game at a friend's place and it convinced me to get a SNES just based on his words.  It was so cool seeing that game in action then.

yeah, I think that, Prince of Persia, or even something like The Lion King made an impression on me because they had really nice animation to them.  Flashback also had really smooth natural looking animation.

The first game to wow me with its graphics? Shit, I remember Sonic being pretty cool, but I guess that was more the speed.

Donkey Kong Country and Yoshi's Island both looked amazing. SM64 (for its 3D) and OOT later on.

Soul Calibur probably is the game that amazed me most when it came out, though. I doubt I'll ever be as amazed as I was when I got Dreamcast.

there's been lots of others, but that's the one that stands out most strongly for me.

honestly, I think it was Mortal Kombat.  I didn't really care about the technical graphics until the PS2 generation but Mortal Kombat had the most violent style at the time.

It's weird, I honestly can't remember a time before the PS1/N64 era that I was like 'holy shit!!" at the graphics for any game. I mean, I was like 'hey, that's pretty nice', but that's about it.

The first instance I could recall was with SM64 and then Ocarina of Time.

Probably Sonic the Hedgehog.  I was never actually impressed with NES visuals, but when I first saw Sonic running at a local store, I was completely blown away.  I had an obsession with parallax scrolling back then and seeing it used in such a fast, colorful game was highly impressive.

It wasn't until the original Doom that was once again truly blown away by visuals.

However, the game that probably left the biggest impact on me was Daytona USA in the arcades.  I didn't understand framerates back then (it was 60 fps), but I KNEW the game was smoother than any other 3D game I had played to date.  It just looked insanely impressive in motion.

One of the early King's Quest games absolutely floored me when I was a wee lad.

Later on in life, Mario 64 amazed me, as did the original Zone of the Enders.

Yeah, I never really got a "holy shit WHAT" feeling until the 3D games came along. Heck, I think the most amazed I ever was a single game was probably the demo for Outcast.

I loved it so much that I asked for it for Christmas, then got in trouble when Cutter Slade said "HOLY SHIT!" in the intro. But damn, those voxels were beautiful. I thought Outcast 2 for "Dolphin and PSX2" would be like real-life. :rofl

:bow "ULUKAI!" :bow2

After that, it's a tie between Rogue Squadron: Rogue Leader and MGS2 for biggest "wow."

I was lucky enough to play the worse Killer Instinct on the Gameboy, so going up to the SNES game was a slight improvement.  That is the only positive memory I have of that game.

Probably Super Mario Bros. when I saw it at my cousin's house. I had never heard of Nintendo before that moment, probably in 87-88.

Later on, Wayne Gretsky hockey on Nintendo 64. Hadn't been gaming in a while, saw that on kiosk while I was working at Blockbuster.

can't really remember being blown away by any early arcade games (of course) or NES games, but I can still remember when my dad told me he saw a screenshot of Super Mario World that had a bullet bill that was as big as a fourth of the screen :o I was floored when I first saw the game myself.

Altered Beast was my first. I remember playing the game at one of the Genesis stations at Service Merchandise. The large characters and the first level boss blew me the fuck away.

The next time I was equally impressed was when I was about 8 and played Ghouls n' Ghosts at the arcade and made it to the crumbling stone statue of the giant cyclops boss. That was probably my most defining moment of gaming.

The 3d era of PS1 and N64 had an opposite effect on me. I hated the way the games looked and played. Yes the games finally made a leap into 3d but they were so clunky and ugly that I had a hard time playing them.
Even the highly regarded Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time I had a hard time getting into. That wasn't a plesant era for me.

megaman 2 -- i saw a shot of the dragon boss in nintendo power and was like 'i have to have that'

This and most of Ninja Gaiden 2 defined the 8 bit era for me.

Super Mario 64 used to have a gigantic 20 tv display showcasing the game being played on a demo station underneath. Really awe-inspiring. I hate OOT now but my first playthrough was life-affirming. Jet Set Radio commercials were the next :o :d for me, but I didnt get back into gaming until 2003. There was this game you may have heard of, Viewtiful Joe. The graphical presentation and VFX powers blew my mind and meant I had to have a gamecube.

Seeing Gears in its gory glory was another highlight, and now Oboro Muramusa is my next venture in shallow approval based on aesthetics.

Wow, yeah. My friends and I used to sneak off to the arcades to play it.

I also vividly recall the first time a friend showed me Shadow of the Beast on his Amiga. Pretty sure I had to change my pants after that, although it was a combination of graphics and music that really floored me having only really played NES games at that point.

Mega Man 2 - seeing the Dragon boss in NP, much like drohne
Phantasy Star - seeing the pseudo 3D dungeons and monster graphics
DOOM - smooth scrolling 3D and lighting
Soul Calibur - running on a friend's import DC, the 3D was leaps beyond the PS1 and N64

I must admit that I wasn't "OMG: impressed with the SNES, even during Donkey Kong Country. I was still young enough to expect 16 bit games to look good. There were a few that made me shit because they looked fucking horrible, but that's about it.

Super Mario 64 was probably my first WTF. I didn't really shit myself until Ocarina of Time though. I remember playing Perfect Dark, frame rate problems and all and thinking that nothing could top that game.

Back when the 64 came out, there wasn't one time that I didn't open up Nintendo Power and get blown away by screenshots. I remember seeing a picture for NFL Quarterback Club and thinking "that looks exactly like fucking real life football" which is funny because now I don't even think the 360 games look that realistic.

I can't remember the first since I pretty much started with Pong, but the last one that blew my mind was Gears.  It was dramatically better-looking than anything else on the PS360.  Before that, I was really stunned by the scale and occasional beauty of Oblivion.

I don't remember being overly impressed with anything on the NES, but here's a short list of games that I remember being impressed by in subsequent generations:

Out of This World (rotoscoping was the shit)
Donkey Kong Country (seriously, who wasn't impressed with that VHS tape NP sent out?)
Star Fox (I didn't play PC games at the time, so this was my first experience with 3D)
Virtua Fighter (the animation was amazing at the time)
Unreal (that intro flyby was mesmerizing)
Jumping Flash (I'm not sure why this is the early PS1 game that sticks out for me, but moving around the 3D environments was just amazingly fresh and unique at the time)
Super Mario 64 (who wasn't impressed?)
NFL2K (I already had an import Dreamcast but seeing NFL2K in motion convinced me to get an American system on day one)
Soul Calibur (those katas....damn)
Halo (people forget how much of a leap Halo was over anything on the PS2 at the time...great scale with a rock-solid frame rate and great detailed textures)

I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot of games, but I wanted to throw my list up before reading the rest of the thread.

EDIT: I completely forgot Metal Gear Solid 1/2 and Final Fantasy 7.

Halo was pretty stunning at the time.  I remember doing coop with a friend and on the second level he would just stair at the grass because the textures amazed him or something.

I still think Halo 3 is a nice looking game and all, but neither Halo 2 nor 3 really matched up to Halo 1 in terms of being a beast at their releases.
