I still remember getting this tape in the mail and being blown away by the size of the levels and enemies:

I watched it like five times and then begged my parents to preorder it. So worth it. :heart

It also had my first glimpse at OoT, which was pretty cool.

The Last Ninja,C64 :heartbeat

(Image removed from quote.)

It was not just graphics, music :omg

Last Ninja was probably one of the best looking C64 games I had. It was also the one videogame me and my dad played together. It took us FOREVER to figure out how to get past the dragon in the first level. Eventually we caved in and called the hotline and figured out about the smokebombs. After that my dad gave up and I continued on to try an beat the 2nd level (which solution was even more insane than the first stage's). And yeah, the music in that game was godly.

megaman 2 -- i saw a shot of the dragon boss in nintendo power and was like 'i have to have that'

This was the first game to wow me too.  It looked like I was going to be playing a cartoon, and bar some horrendous flicker that's exactly what I felt like I was doing.  The bosses in this game were epic.  Soon after, Blaster Master wowed me as well.

Probably Vectorman on Genesis. It had faux-3d character models, at the time I remember being amazed

Doom and then IIRC only a month or two later Descent.  Descent just floored me with it's 6 degrees of freedom.  This was 1995, descent was amazing for the period.

this thread is making me feel like an old twat, rather than just a twat.

Don't worry, you're a relatively young twat, all things considered. :-)

The first game I thought "Wow, it's like I'm really there!" Was Jet! running on an 8086, and again when I ran it on an 80286 possibly with the math-coprocessor -- better framerate but suddenly unbeatable enemies. But that was after high school.

The other game which really wowed me was an Apple ][ game (well, an Apple //e game) which took place entirely on the surface of a vast ocean. I remember it played in hi-res or "double hi-res" and felt incredibly fluid. Wikipedia's list of Apple games is not showing it. The Jordan Mechner games Karateka and Prince of Persia's mocapped animation also blew my mind.

Descent will make most people toss their cookies.
