surprise of the month: DQ5 DS
« on: February 08, 2009, 09:14:36 PM »
Forgot they were doing more after 4, didn't realize this was coming so soon. Game will be shit hot

Shall we talk about it, or just argue the differences between GAF's DS and PSP fanboys?

This is my favorite DQ. It's amazing. It's so epic and grand and the story still manages to stay intimate and personal across generations. It's so great. Best DQ.

Really? I'm even more excited now, I've never played it.

I started off with DQ3 on GBC, then DQMonsters, then I somehow played DQ1 on NES. I got DQ8 but it put me to sleep. Then DQ4 on DS gave me da ill boner.

If DQ5 is better than 3 and 4 then I will have mad orgasms. Did you import the DS version?

Yes. I've been using the Japanese DQ games to practice my Japanese. They are written on the grade school level.

I prefer DQ5 to 4 and 4 to 3, but they are all really good. And 3 has some things about it that make it the most famous I think. But I love 5.

I was going to bypass this game for the time being, but on kev's recommendation alone I will try it day one.

Is it longer than 4?

Is there postgame new content like 4? Is it not shitty like 4's?

It's my favorite DQ as well, although the DS version is total downgrade from the gorgeous PS2 remake that SE was too lame to release in the US ;_;

My clear save for DQIVr was like 20 hours and DQVr was either 30 or 40.  So yeah, it's longer but it's still paced ultra-quick and nothing like DQVIII.

It was 2 parts grinding to 1 part new content.

DQ5 is the best DQ game, I am glad to see the over-the-top accents from DQ4 DS aren't in this version.

So how sexy playable by modern standards is DQ3?  Now that DQ9 got delayed and I'm totally depressed I want to either play DQ7 or DQ3 instead.

EUR version is out, but there are issues. Make sure you're not a fgt noob and know what you're working with.

I got it fixed for my card.

This is way better than the DQ4 remake, which I found unplayable. I forgot how much I adored this game- Just the first 2 or 3 hours have such a fun variety of locations and characters. It looks killer, too. BUT STILL NO TEXT-SPEED OPTION. What gives? Even that Retro Games DQ clone has a B-button insta-text option.

Yea, I wish they let you adjust more than just battle speed. Especially since I have a habit of talking to NPCs twice to make sure they don't have something else to say.

OK I think I'm close to the end, and I don't understand why the game is so revered, it plays like every Dragon Quest game ever. Same repetitive grinding and relaxing pace. Only the two dramatic scenes that you're shown when the hero ages were any different. You get to marry and have kids but I don't understand why everyone goes apeshit about this, it doesn't change the fact that it's still plain ol' vanilla DQ.

Dragon Quest VII had a much better plot and better NPCs.

The story is awesome though for an rpg even by today's standards.  I mean you
spoiler (click to show/hide)
are a slave who gets freed; you are turned into a stone statute and watch as years go by; You re-visit characters from when you were a kid and see where they are now.

.  It's an rpg about growing up and living an actual life and watching as the world inhabitants do the same.

The part where
spoiler (click to show/hide)
you're turned into a statue was soooooo sad. You have to sit there watching some kid grow up while you miss your own children growing up. It's so :(
