Blast from the past: Dreamfall The Longest Journey
« on: February 09, 2009, 06:18:39 PM »
I remember like 3 years ago or something, playing this game in my old pc, and i couldn't run this game with decent settings, but i played it and enjoyed it nonetheless.

So there i see it, and i'm like "holy shit i remember this game, man it must look like shit now", and i install it, and set it to maximum graphics settings, cuz i got a new pc.

And i'm surprised, this game looks awesome, it's impressive how the art and the textures hold up, really shows how smart the devs were with the visuals imo.

Check it. Gonna do a full replay on the game, i wonder what happened to dev house, and if more games like this one are coming? I hope so.

Now we're talking.  EB generally has a problem with it 'cause there's not a lot of gameplay but it's one of the few games out there that really does have a good story, and not just videogame good but genuinely good.

Story-wise, I think Dreamfall is better than TLJ. The gameplay ranges from non-existant to crap (the troll cave, ugh) but if you're looking for a good interactive movie, this is your game. However...

...it took 7 years for them to release a sequel to TLJ, then it ends on a major cliffhanger, are you kidding me Funcom? Die in a fire, plz. ::)

I still have to play this.... :(
I skipped it when it came out because I heard the stealth stuff was distinguished mentally-challenged and I'm not one of those "OMG TLJ WAS A+++++++" people.

That being said I did enjoy TLJ and want to see what they do with a sequel so I should really play this one of these days.  Should run on my PC ok at this point.

I also need to play Broken Sword 3 ^^;  I'm pretty behind on my adventure game sequels.

I agree. The story in Dreamfall is exponentially better than TLJ.  I couldn't give a crap about what happened in that game the first time around and I especially hated all the fairytale bullshit spread throughout.  Dreamfall is the Empire Strikes Back to TLJ's Star Wars - but may be  too generous to TLJ....perhaps TLJ is The Phantom Menace.  I loved the darker tone in Dreamfall and the split perspective from the 3 main characters.  It's just flat out great storytelling and it made me want to go back and give TLJ another go.  It really is, imo, one of the best videogame storylines ever and I usually don't give a damn about that sort of thing.

And while I thought the gameplay could've been beefed up a bit, I still had a great time with Dreamfall.  People complain that it wasn't as solid game wise as TLJ but what the hell was TLJ anyway?  Just another old school point and click adventure wrapped around a bunch of bizarrely esoteric puzzles.  Seriously, some of the solutions in that game are so freakin' out there that I don't know how anyone could find much fun in it.  It reached Myst-level obscurity at times.

I haven't played Dreamfall yet but i've wanted to. I feel that the original was good, but overrated.  But I've wanted to play the sequel..

It doesn't look bad, but the animation (especially during conversations and cutscenes) can be extremely poor which is a bad thing for a story driven game.
