Started a game of RE2 Claire disc on my psp.

I haven't played the game in 10 years and so far, I'm finding it way harder than the original and I'm at the beginning of the game. This is due to a few factors, most notably the zombie count far higher in RE2 right out of the gate. In RE1, you'd typically face off against 1-2 zombies in a room tops, and you only had to fight more than a few at once until the end of the game; even then that was only in a few rooms.

To make matters worse, in RE2 you're in a city traveling through alleys and tight corridors. With the higher zombie count, it's really TEMPTING to go all out and shoot these fuckers, but my philosophy in RE is to save as much ammo as possible making this so much more tough on things.

Beat Claire A.

Took me 5 hours and fifty five minutes to beat. I got a D ranking. :(

Review of Claire A:

+ Nice difficulty balance, for the most part, because I only got three weapons in the game.

+ The ability to choose whether or not to recieve the submachine gun and extra inventory should add to replay value.

+ I thought the story was really good, with an interesting set of characters and villains. You have the feeling that you're just one small story in the grand scheme of things, and that Raccoon City's citizens are trying their hardest just to survive. Because the story has a larger scale, the story comes off far more morbid and depressing than RE1's.

+ Fun sense of adventure and puzzles. Although not as good as RE1's or from what I remember in RE3. The puzzles were tame, but still fun as hell.

+ I think the game is far more scary and tense than all the other RE's I've played, with the exception of 4.

+ In RE1 I mostly stuck with the handgun, magnum, and shotgun the entire game. I didn't use the bazooka once. In RE2, not only do you get more grenade launcher ammo than you did compared to RE1, the game is designed so that every single weapon should be used at one time or another. I had to use the grenade launcher on Lickers, for example, just to survive their encounters.

This is a part of the reason I feel RE2 is a better survival horror game compared to the original. Unlike the mansion in RE1, at almost no time in RE2 where you feel safe. When you feel safe, the game slaps you in the face and makes you face reality. A room that was once safe suddenly has zombies crawling through the windows; you get an item in an interrogation room and all of a sudden a Licker jumps through the damn window; the shutter in the autopsy room suddenly opening, with a zombie crawling out. RE2 constantly plays with player expectations, forming an extremely cohesive horror game experience and I always had to make sure I was packing enough heat to kill em all.

+ Excellent atmosphere, use of music, and graphics (for its time). I first played the game a bit when it came out, and I was impressed then, but I'm even more impressed at how well it has aged graphically. Small touches like light reflecting on Claire's clothes/skin, the different sounds as she walks on different textures, the amount of GORE in the game. Holy shit. The top half of an alligator's jaw EXPLODED. When the G-Virus embryo's hatch or whatever, they tear their victim in HALF, Alien style.

- Sherry. Fuck. Fuck Sherry. Okay, I don't mind that Sherry follows you, that's good. But when she's infected with the G-Virus? My God. You'll run a good amount, and suddenly she stops following, head balled into her crotch. The only way to make her move again is to go back. When you're in a sewer full of giant spiders, that's the LAST thing you want. FUCK SHERRY.

I'm only half way through the game now, may start on Leon B later but this is shaping up to be a survival horror classic. Shame I couldn't beat it when I was 12 years old for various reasons.

in defense of Himumu, downloading the game could have been legal and simple if they put the PS1 games on PSN

does Gamestop sell PS1 games anymore? I know they could have sold the gamecube version, but I'm just curious.

You should play the Gamecube Resident Evil, it does this pretty well.

RE2 was easily my favorite RE before 4.

I played the shit out of that game. Unlocked all the extra stuff and weapons.

I think to get the gatling gun you had to beat the A and B game in under 3 hours (so like 90 minutes per game), no saves except for the one to switch discs, no first aid sprays, and sparing use of power weapons (which I think meant hardly any magnum or acid/flame rounds.) That's what got you the S rank, which unlocked the gatling.

When I tried it, I went Claire A and Leon B. Did pretty great all the way to the very end, when for some reason the Tyrant, who I had beaten up a bunch of times, just kicked my ass. And I had a fuck terrible time trying to pick up the rocket launcher. My little brothers were watching me do it, and they were screaming their heads off about how I was fucking up, I was screaming at Leon to pick up the Goddamn launcher, it was madness. But I took him out and got my rank.

One of my most intense gaming memories.

It's funny.

If there is one thing I really miss from the old style REs, it's how you had to play to get S ranks. Which was juke and jive all over the damn place, hardly ever shoot a monster, and have an old school schmup style knowledge of the enemy placement and attack patterns.

RE4 is great, and I wouldn't want the series to regress. But damned if I don't miss doing clean runs through those goofy ass mansions, baiting zombies then busting a 180 turn into a pattern and zipping towards the door like a wide out.

Beat Resident Evil 2 yesterday with Leon B, got rank B, took 4 hours.  Got me some sub machine gun unlocked in the process. I should be starting Nemesis later today, and I can't wait because I love the game and this time I don't have to worry about beating it too fast because it's my friend's copy.

Overall review of RE2:

+ Excellent, excellent story. It is entirely simplistic, but what it makes up for simplicity is an amazing sense of atmosphere, dread, amazing moments, and fun characters. I completely sympathize with the antagonists (aside from Mr. X of course) in RE2. The Birkin's just wanted to continue their research, and if it were not for Umbrella what happened in Raccoon City wouldn't have happened. Seeing Birkin transform from his more human Tyrant form to more traditional Tyrant form, and finally into fucking LAVOS from Chrono Trigger was awesome.

Sympathizing for a villain in a horror game, or story period, is a rarity for me. And it is because of this simplicity that RE2's story shines. You constantly wonder about intentions; Ada's intentions, Anette Birkin's intentions, why the fuck is Mr. X chasing me?! Although the story isn't full of absolute mind fuck worth moments like Silent Hill, and I'll be first to admit the story ain't that deep in a SH or Jacob's Ladder sorta way, the story is still full to the brim with memorable moments. Mr. X; the giant Croc, Ada slapping Anetta in the face and pushing her off a platform, fucking Ben, the last quarter of the game entirely including Ada shooting Mr. X in the FACE.

+ The dual scenario concept is pulled off extremely well, aside from the first half of the game, which is full of doing the same puzzles as you did in Scenario A, which makes no sense.

+ This is survival horror to its fullest. I truly felt like I was trying my hardest to survive, especially at the end of Leon B in the lab. For some reason, that was friggin hard. There were a bunch of enemies that were easy as well with Claire because she had the bazooka, but with Leon my weapons barely made a dent and I had to go out of my way to use special weapons, which I was planning on using on the final boss. I had no more shotgun ammo, handgun is pretty much useless at that point in the game, and using my Submachine Gun and Flamethrower or Magnum would spell bad news for me later in the game.

I kept dying on Mr. X in the room with Leon, until I could evade him soundly. But I only brought herbs and a magnum because I didn't see a point in bringing too many weapons when all I did was dodge him and use the rocket launcher. By the time I got to Birkin's final form, I had exhausted all of my rocket launcher ammo, and I just had my trusty magnum with only a few bullets. I didn't think I'd be able to kill him with that, but I somehow did. The pay off was worth it.

+ Amazing music and atmosphere. RE2 completely outclasses the original in this regard, well, except music.

+ Insane incentives to replay.  I like challenging myself. One of the perquisites to get an S rank is to not use any First Aid Sprays. So I didn't use any as Leon. I tried my best not to use many special weapons as well. I ended up with a B rank, I think, because I didn't beat it under 3 hours but I did well for a first time. I want to get an S rank with both characters someday to get the Gatling Gun. On top of this, like RE4, there's are extra modes after beating the game. Extra Battle mode is fun as hell, btw. I wonder what you get if you beat it. It's really tough too.

- Sherry is the one big negative for me. Stupid kid.

- I didn't like doing some puzzles all over again in B scenario. It ruined any belivability for me. For example, in the police station, you have to get those red jewels...AGAIN. Claire already put that crap in, so why do it again? There are far too many moment in RE2 where you're repeating what you did in Scenario A. There should have been more unique moments. Thankfully, there are times when the puzzle solving connect both scenarios. In order to get the last Chess Plug, you have to wait for Claire to explode the door to the chief's office and then go and get it. This complaint seems moot because it's really only present in the Police Station. Once into the sewers, factory, and lab their scenarios are vastly different, which was great.

As for ranking..even though I really enjoyed RE2, I still like RE1 and RE4 more. Maybe this will change as I play it more.

he says that after disliking RE5 to this degree, he really wants to play RE4 to compare. so no. what bothers me is some of the scenarios he describes. Apparently there are 2 on rails parts. I asked: 'what, not some jeep + turret shit right?' after which he replied: exactly that :( one of the on rails bosses is el gigante with a beard
