They're clones, really. I did a game called "Cosmic Gate" and it was basically Galaga

... unless there is a game called Cosmic Gate that plays like Galaga out there

No, they're all made up parodies/clones of 8-bit games.

The Arino guy is like "GO THROUGH TWO WARP GATES, DO YOU KNOW HOW!?" which is cool but you really don't know. But the little kid Arino (in the past) is like read this magazine I got, it's sweet! And as luck would have it, it has cheats and tips on Cosmic Gate, including how to activate warp gates.

Pretty neat.

It's a game about 1980's gaming. You play as two little Japanese kids playing made-up Famicom games, and you get magazines as the time goes by showing tips and hints and previews and news for upcoming games (which you may get to play later).

There's parodies of platformers and shooters and RPGs, and top-down racing games and sequels that are completely different from the original game.

the RPG is like one of the last things you unlock, unfortunately

Better than the Sonic Megacollection?

I think they compliment each other. Parodies on the go, and classics in high definition. Both have "achievements" (one is story related, one is optional)

the rpg is 2nd to last.  The final game you unlock is the Ninja Gaiden clone, which is actually probably the best game.  Most of the games are a bit crappy, and at the same time charming, but the Ninja Gaiden, Dragon Quest, and shoot em up game are all awesome.  The sequel does look way better and I'm probably going to import that instead of picking up the localized original.

That trailer is pretty cool.  I actually kind of want to get that for the kungfu game.  I think that trailer might have sold me on the US version of the first one and if I dig that I'll import the 2nd.

GameFan magazine was just a rename, it hasn't really been modified all too much so it still resembles Famitsu a bit. Also, Dave H. is just a reviewer (he reviewed Cosmic Gate in the first magazine you receive) while Dan Sock (Dan Hsu) is the E.I.C..

Kind of... but not really. Wario War is like YOU HAVE THREE SECONDS TO PLUG THE NOSE

In this one you can take as long as you want (well, maybe that changes in the later challenges) but they're general achievements that you would find on Xbox 360 - "Reach Level 5!" "Go through 2 warp gates!"

I really dig this so far.  Although I was dumb and didn't realize you had to QUIT to save and had to redo a few challenges >_<

These games play better than anything on the Sonic Genesis Collection.  Then again, maybe 8-bit/16-bit games just look/feel better on a tiny screen like the DS than on a big HDTV with smoothing filters and a PS or Xbox pad.

I love the little jokes and references to classic gaming culture... chatting with kid Arino and him talking about how he doesn't eat when he plays games b/c he doesn't want to get the controllers all greasy is something I would say. So far I'm on the final challenge of Haggle Man, will play more today.

How many games are there?

Rally King SUX.  Ruins the game.

Weak.  It's definitely the game that requires the most effort (aka, memorizing the tracks like hmmm...a real racing game!) but it controls pretty well and is fun when you know the tracks and are passing everyone through shortcuts and not spinning out.

I'm on Star Prince and I've very much enjoyed every game so far.  They don't feel retro at all to me.  They are like modern playable and fun videogames with good game design but with a nice 8-bit visual front.

It's not that difficult once you get the hang of it. Getting caught in a back n' forth bounce and having your car turned around is aggravating. I just finished the last challenge in Rally King SP and that was probably the most annoying one so far. I don't know why they felt the need to include two Rally Kings though. I guess after playing something as fun as Star Prince they felt they had to ruin the moment somehow. Hopefully RK SP is the last of them.

Edit: Ooh, a new Haggle Man is next  :heartbeat

for what it's worth I HATED Rally King until I got hang of drift-boosting; after that it wasn't so bad. Still it's the weakest game (same goes for Rally King SP) of the bunch, but it's doesn't drag down the game by any means, especially because you get badass games to play (Star Prince and Haggleman 2) after you're done with them.

I'm at Guadia Quest right now :hyper

Wow, the Rally King challenges are cake. Why do they have to make the drifting one so distinguished mentally-challenged? The rest are crap like "dur finish course 1" "finish course 2 above 5th" "reach 15,000"

but no, the want you to drift twice in a stage at the beginning.

huh

Drifting takes 2 seconds and you can do it at any time even on straight-aways.  I got the drift challenge cleared like 10 seconds into the first race.  It's EXACTLY like Mario Kart snaking.

The hardest for me was coming in 5th or higher on course 2.  Took me a bunch of tries to learn the course so I could avoid spinning out on all the quicksands.

That is true. The way the manual describes it is completely wrong. I was doing it their way. But it's just like drifting in Mario Kart. I still hold that Rally King is a horrible, horrible game.

Star Prince is much better. It's still ridiculously easy. I beat Haggleman's 8 stages without dying, and I did the Area 2 challenge for Star Prince without dying.

The last one in the next Rally King is the real nuisance. If you screw up just once (and it's pretty easy given the way the 3rd course is laid out) you'll probably have to replay the whole thing over again.

I just finished Haggle Man 2 and am now on the RPG. I was really impressed on the effort they took to make Haggle Man 2 feel like real sequel. New rules, better graphics, better music, new items, enemies, larger levels, and other tiny details. I can wait to sit down and play through it once I get done with the challenges. The RPG so far is looking a bit more full fledged than I thought it was going to be. Think somewhere in between Dragon Quest I and II and you'll get an idea.

I'm on the last challenge in Guadia Quest but I can't figure out my way through the dungeon.  I keep going in circles and ending back at areas where I've been :(  At this point I'm really overleveled and have all the equipment from the shop, but I just can't find the damn 4th floor (or even the 3rd floor for that matter most of the time).

I need auto-mapping in my rpgs :(

Is there an online map for the game somewhere?
