Holocaust denier bishop smh

BERLIN — A bishop who faces a Vatican demand to recant his denial of the Holocaust said he would correct himself if he is satisfied by the evidence, but insisted that examining it "will take time," a German magazine reported Saturday.

Richard Williamson is one of four bishops from the ultraconservative Society of St. Pius X whose excommunication was lifted by the Vatican last month. The decision sparked outrage because Williamson had said in a television interview he did not believe any Jews were gassed during the Holocaust.

On Wednesday, the Vatican demanded that Williamson recant his denial before he can be admitted as a bishop into the Roman Catholic Church.

Williamson made clear he does not plan to comply immediately, and rejected a suggestion that he might visit the Auschwitz death camp, the weekly Der Spiegel reported.

"Since I see that there are many honest and intelligent people who think differently, I must look again at the historical evidence," the British bishop was quoted as saying.

"It is about historical evidence, not about emotions," he added, according to the report. "And if I find this evidence, I will correct myself. But that will take time."

The magazine suggested that he could make a personal visit to Auschwitz, set up by the Nazis in occupied Poland, which stands as the most powerful symbol of the Holocaust. More than 1 million people, mostly Jews, died there.

Williamson replied: "I will not go to Auschwitz," Der Spiegel said.

Der Spiegel said Williamson, who lives in Argentina, insisted on having questions faxed to him and sent his replies by e-mail. It said their authenticity was confirmed in a phone call by Williamson and a lawyer for the Society of St. Pius X.

Williamson has apologized to Pope Benedict XVI for having stirred controversy, but has not repudiated his comments, in which he also said only 200,000 to 300,000 Jews were killed during World War II and none was gassed.

"I was convinced that my comments were right on the basis of my research in the '80s," Der Spiegel quoted Williamson as saying. "I must now examine everything again and look at the evidence."

Real talk: if the Jews were really gassed, how come the gas chambers at Auschwitz had unsealed doors and feature windows

Who cares, at least the catholic church a few days ago declared intelligent design as just a "culturally phenomenon" and not an actual fact backed by the church, that evolution is the vatican's official stance.

So catholic church still beat protestant church in being slightly less distinguished mentally-challenged.

MUCH MORE IMPORTANT THAN BISHOP GUY:

Quote
The Vatican gave the Creationist lobby a left right sign of the cross today, announcing it would stage a conference on Darwinism next month and declaring that it was one of the Fathers of the Church that thought up the idea in the first place.

At one point the conference at the Pontifical Gregorian University wasn't going to give Creationism or Intelligent Design a hearing at all. But apparently the organisers have relented, and will consider Intelligent Design as a "cultural phenomenon" rather than as a valid scientific theory, giving US-based IDers the chance to be smirked at by a room full of Monseigneurs, Cardinals and Bishops.

Previewing the conference yesterday, Archbishop Gianfranco Ravasi, head of the Church's Pontifical Council for Culture, conceded the Church had been hostile to Darwin on occasion. But, he said, the Church had never formally condemned Darwin, and he noted that in the last 50 years a number of Popes had accepted evolution as a valid scientific approach to human development.

Indeed, he said, evolution could be traced back through Scholastics such as St Thomas Aquinas to St Augustine in the fourth century, who had noted that "big fish eat smaller fish".

Augustine is probably more famous for praying "God, make me good - but not yet." Which also has some evolutionary overtones if you think about it.

Marc Leclerc, a natural philosopher at the University went further, saying Creationists were mistaken in arguing that that Darwinism was "totally incompatible with a religious vision of reality".

The conference, and the Church's endorsement of Darwin, represents another curve ball from the Holy See at other, arguably more fundamentalist, streams of Christianity. In December Pope Benedict tipped his hat to Galileo - who definitely was condemned by the Church - while simultaneously going all New Age by blethering on about the Solstice.

Last May, the Vatican astronomer really went out on a limb, claiming there was nothing incompatible between being a Catholic and believing in Aliens. He even suggested Aliens could be free of the stain of original sin, the stubborn blemish that has condemned humanity to a progressive decline from the Garden of Eden, through slavery, the dark ages, religious strife, atomic war, and now, the credit crunch and Simon Cowell.

But a wholesale worldview rejig this is not. Other branches of modern science get shorter shrift, with genetic manipulation fairly high on the Vatican's current don't-like list. ®

Maybe you should stop pulling information from that fetid asshole

Quote
In an October 22, 1996, address to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, Pope John Paul II updated the Church's position to accept evolution of the human body:

"In his encyclical Humani Generis (1950), my predecessor Pius XII has already affirmed that there is no conflict between evolution and the doctrine of the faith regarding man and his vocation, provided that we do not lose sight of certain fixed points....Today, more than a half-century after the appearance of that encyclical, some new findings lead us toward the recognition of evolution as more than a hypothesis. In fact it is remarkable that this theory has had progressively greater influence on the spirit of researchers, following a series of discoveries in different scholarly disciplines. The convergence in the results of these independent studies -- which was neither planned nor sought -- constitutes in itself a significant argument in favor of the theory."[9]

Oops, 5 decades

Galileo was a friend of the pope, and his research was sponsored by the Vatican. He just made a lot of enemies, especially with Jesuits. His book had some sections that came off as what we'd call "trolling" today, so people got pissed off at him. Geocentricism vs. Heliocentricism was actually a debate in church circles, and Galileo asked the pope beforehand if he could write a book about it.

No, literally. The Pope was like, "okay Galileo, but make sure you don't just say, 'earth goes around the sun, ur dumb', cuz technically we don't have any concrete evidence, and I think it's the sun going around the Earth."

So Galileo went, "okay lol" and wrote a fictional dialog between Dumbfuck and Super-Genius, in which Dumbfuck made geocentrists look like right distinguished mentally-challenged fellows. Suddenly everyone was all up in Galileo's grill, even though he was just doing it for lolz.

tl;dr, galileo liked to troll people who were wrong, but he was still breaking the tos by flaming and trolling. tos were harsh as fuck though, so we eventually said "sorry about that, we overreacted g".

The phases of Venus, discovered by Galileo decades before his dialog, is pretty hard evidence.

The Pope didn't allow Galileo to advocate heliocentricism at all. As you said earlier, people were allowed to debate heretical claims, but only if they maintained that these claims were advanced only for the sake of argumentation. They weren't allowed to actually advocate heretical positions, like geocentrism. This is a phony form of intellectual freedom, and barely makes the Catholic Church look good.
