Xbox 360, 4th and Down
« on: February 14, 2009, 10:28:08 PM »
Started up Rock Band tonight, 3RL

3rd one since launch (got this one - an Elite - in September 2007)

I dunno, getting pretty tired of it, might just shrug off the 360 entirely

Hopefully I'm under warranty, but I can't seem to get hold of an actual human being

oh well, at least I'll get a fuckload of gamestop credit by trading everything

I'm thinking about buying another standalone console, just because I need a working console around when ODST comes out. Given how cheap standalone systems are right now, it even seems like a plausible way to go.

I'm on my 2nd X360 now. A Falcon.

Works like a charm thus far. But it still feels like I'm playing on a timebomb.

A 5 year cycle would be nice, we could use some new consoles sooner rather than later. One-console future, preferably. Well, ignoring the Wii of course.

i'm just seriously getting tired of it, and this is going to fly in the face of certain recordings i made recently

i can understand electronics breaking after a couple years or so since most electronic equipment has the build quality of toothpick house, but goddamn, this will equal out to a replacement a year, and that's bullshit no matter how you try to spin it

this will certainly make my decision over which system to purchase sfiv on a lot easier, that's for sure

Where do you keep your 360?

I keep my 360 in a pretty well ventilated space for itself, and i always have it vertically positioned. It took care of all the problems i had 1st time around, and my friends had.

Considering how these latest consoles are supposed to be much more reliable than the one i have, i always have a hard time understanding how so many consoles crap on one's hand.

But if you already have the console vertically positioned, and in a well ventilated space, then there's nothing else you can do.

You have it vertically positioned? Not kidding, the console becomes way more stable in that position.

My first X360 was vertically positioned, had enough breathe space and I even removed the dust with a frikkin vacuum cleaner once a weak.

And still it broke down.

Don't think it's just shitty luck. X360 is the worst build console hardware out there.

I also hope that for the next generation of systems, all disc media will be scratch resistant.

Anyway, at least these days there isn't this massive wall of denial to make the situation more sour than it already is. The problem is accepted as a legit issue, which is a lot different from issues reported within 6 months of launch.

"Dude what's your GT? Yeah, well, anyone can make up a GT! I bet you never owned a 360"

"Mine hasn't broken and 200 of my friends have 360s and they aren't broken either, you're a liar"

Or the best one, "I bet you just bought one so that it would break and you could talk shit about it"

Just stick without one for a while. There isn't a flurry of must have games coming out any time soon anyway, is there? Not that mine is a good example to follow for a life of sensible money management, but I tend to just buy one when there are a few new hot games worth playing, and then sell it for as little loss as possible after I'm done with said must haves.  :-\ The PS3 has been allowed to stick around because it's a good BR and media player, and because I don't feel like downgrading from my launch system to some no-BC-having step-cousin.

Just got another 360 because ODST made me hot for Halo 3 again.  :'(

the worst thing is, i spent the extra $50 at best buy for extended replacement warranty - twice

i used the first one when ms was still in denial phase over 360 shittery, and wanted to charge me $129 to repair my launch 360

i paid another $50 for the second replacement plan thinking ms was going to continue along this track of "nu-uh, ain't nuthin wrong with our stuff," and used it when my second 360 ate it because, well, you know, i paid for the coverage

by then best buy was all like "heh, yeah, we don't do that anymore with consoles since they break when you blink at them" so i passed on the new $50 "repair" warranty (they send them in for repair now instead of just letting you take a new one home)

so, basically i spent an extra $100 just to keep a working 360 for two years

i'm extra pissed since my friend only comes into town once every couple months or so, and after we were denied rock band we ended up playing the wii  :'(

see, you can kick the wii down a flight of steps and it'll still work

i hate doing it, but

This is purely an emotional decision.  The company will replace almost any unit with legitimate red ring issues and, quite frankly, saying that the PS3 is a viable replacement is laughable.  Microsoft's build quality is still suspect, but the company also delivers the best gaming unit on the market in terms of current library and future release.

I most definitely understand the frustration, but hawking all your stuff out of spite doesn't hurt Microsoft - it just ends up hurting you.

Speaking of build quality, I was playing my Wii, and it was going in and out of sync like every so often. It made my gameplay experience horrible and I'm seriously considering dropping my Wii.

On the other hand, my 360 controller was rock solid, and I played a nice hefty 6 hours before turning it off.

Eel, when did BestBuy tell you they don't do it anymore? When my 2 years were up (in September 08) I took my 360 in for a swap. They still had the replacement plans and they were actually $10 or $15 cheaper than the one I'd originally gotten.

Yes, what. That is how aghast I would be if my Wii was stolen, or broken, unable to recover all those products I purchased. What.

Well, disregarding the obvious lols re: purchase, I wasn't aware that this was their policy. Isn't that shit tied to some online profile or some shit?

No. You can link your purchases to a MyNintendo account, but it's optional and it's only to get NintendoBucks online or something. The only way to transfer downloads is to ship the Wii off to Nintendo.

Which incidentally I will have to do someday, when my Wii displays a white screen there are black specks visible on the screen, the shit ass GPU is fried.

I don't get the beef with MS' DLC standards. All you need to do is activate your gamertag on someone else's XBox and they let you redownload all of your shit no questions asked. Obviously they need to do something to prevent you from doing that with everyone you know, so they make you be connected to LIVE. Seems like a common sense approach to me.

I almost gutted my first wii once in a night of epic stupid. I lost the sd card slot and it had trouble reading some games at startup, but I was surprised at how for the most part it still functioned as is. Nintendo build quality isn't really debatable, although I think I had two ds systems with wonky touchscreens (small deadzones+ouendan=fail).

Anectdotaly, two people I know at work have replaced their 360 system's at least once. The other two are roomates and I lost track after the fourth or fifth time. Then they bought a second console because COD4 didn't have splitscreen. That one started eating discs and they sent it in.
Is the failure rate in the high 90s? Its crazy to think.

There was a change in February of 2007 that would drastically change their return policy. Are you saying it doesn't apply to video game systems? If so, I might have to return the PS3 before KZ2 comes out. It's been working alright (no freezes), but it still gets the red dots and in-game stretched polygons. KZ2 will probably kill it right off.

360 hardware is crap.  But the choice was essentially:

1.  Buy a shitty designed product in 2005, and live with duct tape solutions and hassles as they come up, or

2.  Have MS wait an extra year to fix design flaws then launch in 2006

I would chose #1 every time.
