Or does Eliza Dushku simply suck this much as an actress?

I didn't hate the 1st episode, but i reckon it was a pretty poor start for the season. Next episodes better be better.

I am already getting this sense that the basic plot form revolves around women being manufactured with limits and seeing if they can get around their imaginary identity to be more than what they were programmed to be.

But I can't tell because Hulu stopped buffering.

Obviously Whedon didn't fucking learn his lesson with Firefly. They fucking DEBUTED this show in the same fucking time slot as Firefly, and it will do just as well. They don't call it the "Friday night death slot" for nothing. Friday is a night where people go out with their friends to have a drink or catch a movie.

I heard Whedon give the brief outline and it sounded way too stupid for me to accept.

Why can't Dushku not be in shows with the stupidest plots imaginable?  She was some sort of ghost investigator in her last outing.

I'm pretty sure he didn't choose the timeslots, Fox did.  Fox is just screwing him over once again.

X-Files spent its early years on a Friday timeslot. It's perfect for the geek market. The question is more about Fox having patience.

Watched the rest of the pilot. Interesting premise, but it had some bad lines and just lacked some of the qualities that keep Whedon shows out of the syndicated saturday afternoon sci-fi realm.

The martyr complex Whedonites have is hilarious.  Joss against the world!

I'd say its

Angel > Firefly > Buffy> This Dollhouse pilot

If we break it into chunks

Meat of Angel > Early Buffy > Firefly > very start of Angel > Dollhouse pilot > middle years of buffy > last years of buffy

I'm not a Whedon fanboy, in that I follow any Whedon net sites or the subculture of Buffy or the fanfic travesties, but I have certainly enjoyed some of his shows. My worry is that he thinks he's a feminist, but has horrible female leads or major female characters, and then does things with his female characters that make them completely pathetic and compromised. Angel was probably stronger because he had to deal with a male lead, and Firefly stronger for the same reason. Also, even though Firefly revolved around a buffy jr character, she was more a narrative device than a strong character that overtook episodes. Whedon makes interesting nerdy hot chicks that provide good subplots. Once he goes with focusing on the female psych, shit falls apart and you hate his shows.

Dollhouse and Eliza Dushku as its main focus seems doomed for those reasons.

Actually, what I meant is that he is stupid for settling on having a show on Fox AGAIN to begin with.

My only Whedon experience has been Firefly, which fucking deserved more than just one season and a shitty movie.

As a movie it works well, but individual episodes of the series were much better for one, and a lot of the characters deserved better sendoffs than that. I'm also slightly bitter because it destroyed my hopes of a possible revival.

I'm long overdue for a rewatch, however.

Buffy is actually not all that bad if try not to take it seriously, and ignore it when it takes itself too seriously.

I actually agree: Buffy was at its best when it was funny and used the-monster-of-the-week to explore overdone teenage themes.

The second episode was better than the first one. It was still disposable entertainment, but maybe it'll be better than Fringe, and I needed something to watch before BSG came on. Plus it has Helo in it.

Yeah, the second episode was a lot better, but still not great. I'll give it a couple of more episodes. You normally have to wait a couple of episodes for a serialized drama to see if it will be good or not.

Holy crap, the 2nd episode was just as bad as the 1st one.

This is cheesy as hell, and the whole episode felt like some Ranger Texas episode. I can see Buffy lovers liking this show, since that show was cheesy as hell also, but this is far from having the quality of other shows going right now.
