Like stated in the Evilbore podcast about people maxing shit out having assburgers, I think I've gone too far. I've spent a good couple of hours raising funds and buying a bunch of tri-Emblems (the real ones) from the 2nd Bonus Dungeon. Lots of grinding as far as the money went but I came back with an assload of kickass gear (and synth material in the form of tri-Emblems)

So is there a lot of sci-fi in this game, or does it quickly become generic loli fantasy like the last game?

There's a lot more scifi than any other Star Ocean game. I'd say that it's about average Star Trek episode level. As in: planet-hopping with your ship, underdeveloped worlds, other space-faring races, a few developed worlds, and some alternate realities.

(Image removed from quote.)

There were Star Trek episodes that had the crew interacting with underdeveloped planets and races. There were Star Trek episodes where they interacted with other space-faring races. There were Star Trek episodes where they went to alternate realities. On AVERAGE the amount of scif-ness in Star Ocean 4 is similar to the average Star Trek episode's amount of scifi-ness.

Beat the game, I swear Edge Level 80 skill (Edge skill something) was a godsend, the final boss is really a fucking HP whore, though at level 80 i had no problem other than his HP.

as for the whole game, 5/10.

shit voice acting, shit story, shit characters, outdated gameplay (long ass dungeons and fields everywhere for no goddamn reason , few save points and just not fucking fun), weak battle system (can't target, few learned skills, distinguished mentally-challenged rush mode, distinguished mentally-challenged beatwhatever system) and whatever i missed.

tl;dr buy Lost Odyssey or/and Vesperia instead of this Tri-Ace bullshit or heck just buy Star Ocean 2 PSP if you really need your Star Ocean fix.

No, but he is an annoying kid character that serves little useful purpose.

That was the weirdest and most unexpected disc change ever.  Just walking around the overworld and bit doing nothing really and suddenly I'm at disc 2!

BlueTsunami

 • The Muffin Man

:lol I had the same reaction. If your just in it to complete it, you won't have to worry about disk changing (back and forth between 2 and 3). But Post game shit and when you hit the final planet (and need to go back to Roak), you'll need to change the disk.

my god the folks responsible for the cutscenes in this game should be fucking ashamed of themselves

they're supposed to be badasses saving your bacon but the scene falls so flat :lol

god the laser sound effects are so fucking lame :rofl

I posted this in the GAF thread but I had gotten to the last boss in the 2nd Bonus Dungeon and got knocked the fuck out. Cheapest boss ever. The whole fight involves you res'ing you characters and hopping they can take a bite out of her. I wasn't ready for it either (I was planning in returning topside, making some better armor and weapons with shit I had acquired, then returning). The whole dungeon setup and progression fucking sucks (so much so that I never want to return to that repetitive hellhole).

If tri-Ace really want to pull a dungeon like that (randomly generated, survival based and getting crazy loot), do it like Lufia 2. That post game dungeon fucking ROCKED and didn't have gimmicky ways to progress through each level (just fucking survive and find the warp point).

where are the bonus dungeons? are they hard to find?

and even though most of this game is laughably bad (graphics, cutscenes, sound design) i still find the exploration, dungeons, and battle system to be enjoyable

although i do like the cutscenes. in the they're so bad they're amusing kind of way

You do have to do a bit of looking to find the first one (which when completed will allow you to go to a certain spot to get into the second one). You first need to beat the game, save after the credits then reload that save. It'll throw you at the last save point with a warp point to the right and a Dragon Boss to the Left (that will give you a certain item). Your then allowed to go hog wild from there.

The bosses in the Bonus Dungeons are actually fun and challenging. The regular enemies are ridiculously hard at first, so a sense of accomplishment is actually felt when your able to wipe them out with your newly created gear. There's also an area, with a bit of grinding and IC'ing EXP factors on your equipment will allow you to level up all of your characters to the max level (relatively easily).

The first dungeon is actually labyrinthine in its setup, so its not bad at all. Its the second one that's a total pain in the dick. If you actually pursue both of them, you'll find out why.

Wait, why not?  SO3 is one of the best selling j-rpgs of the last ten years in the US.  X360 owners buy a shitload of games.  SO4 is scifi, non-cellshaded and has SquareEnix name on it.  I figured it was a lock for 500k-1 million.

just skip the cutscenes. you won't be missing much and you get a nice little synopsis when you skip'em telling you what happened

that space battle looks pretty cool to me.  i guess it is stylized rather than realistic or whatever, but i don't understand why someone would care about realistic explosions.  i'd rather see pretty colored lights.

I don't get how they can actually get the voice acting to be that bad. Are they trying to emulate the Japanese voices, or something? I really don't get it. Even shit VA directors working on a dime would have it in them to get something better even out of a shit group of voice "talent."
