My wife is going to Peru for 3 weeks. I am going to take that time to gorge myself on a video game. I'll either end up playing WoW with some buddies or going Japafag and buying Star Ocean 4. Game Informer kind of dislikes it: http://i39.tinypic.com/1gmwwy.jpg , but this is out in Japan tommorrow, right? Someone tell me whether I should like it

Sounds like SO3 and almost every Tri-ace game lately: Horrible narrative with fun, but ultimately broken, battle system.

I think if you go in with low expectations it'll probably be a fun romp. I'll be playing it mainly for the graphics once I finish up Yakuza 3.

The problem with most RPGs for me, and I KNOW this'll happen with SO4, is the super sloooooooowwww intro chapters. The only reason I made it through that section of Persona 4 was because I had basically unlimited time over Christmas break. I know I'd play it a bunch if I just got past that point, but right now I just don't feel like I have the time, especially after reading that GI review. I'll still pick it up, but like I said, I'll probably have to wait until summer to actually play it. Might as well just buy it then, because the price will undoubtedly drop.

Why would you expect that to be any better?

It's pretty clear that the resolution was dropped in order to hit 60 fps. Only the battles are rendered at such a low resolution (the rest of the game is near 720p). I think the loss in resolution is acceptable when you consider the framerate. I mean, their previous 360 game ran in full 720p but constantly dipped below 30 fps during battle. It was unacceptable.

i don't have a problem with multidisc games when done right, but constantly having to swap out the discs is pretty shitty

True. The way multiple discs have been handled with SO4 is pretty awful.

The installation methods used for MGS4 were pretty bad too, as you said (fine during the initial playthrough, but annoying if you wanted to go back and enjoy certain segments). It seems to me that a lot of Japanese developers are struggling with data streaming.
