EB: Let's play Super Mario World
« on: February 18, 2009, 03:23:54 PM »
Been about a year or so since my last playthrough, and this game is just as awesome as it ever was. :D One of the few games I can actually go back to and enjoy at any point.

Let us pay tribute to possibly the greatest 2D Mario of them all. Though try not to let the cape overpower you and force you to breeze through the levels  :'( :'( (goddamn distinguished mentally-challenged gaffers)

It's great, best 2D Mario, though I haven't played through it since I was a kid.

great game, but I just recently played the Virtual Console one.

btw, SMB3 is way better than SMW.  I'm shocked when I see people who think otherwise.  It's almost like when people think Banjo is better than Mario 64.

:bow Best Mario game ever :bow2

I do this every time I replay - go through the game in the shortest # of level possible, and then go through the game with all 96 stars.

I disagree.  I prefer the play mechanics and level design of SMW.  They are both fantastic games, however, but I think World is better designed overall.

I'm shocked

and yeah, doing a playthrough of Mario 3 or World is great.  When I was younger I would just get double whistles, finish world 1, go to world 8 from there.  That or go to World 4.

Both SMW and SMB3 are fuckin awesome. I like that SMW has more of a focus on exploration, and I would have to say it just barely edges out SMB3 for me. However, they're still my two favorite Mario games.

Though YI prolly has the best level design out of all of them.

I liked SMB3 a heap more.  That said, when SMB3 first came out I wasn't too keen on it - I felt like Nintendo had crammed in too much 'stuff' compared to the simplistic perfection of SMB1.

How disappointed were you with Yoshi's Island DS?  :-\

After playing New Super Mario Bros, I went back and played the older ones. I was surprised at how short all of the levels were. Especialy smb3.  What seemed like grueling gauntlets as a kid were easy breezy anticlimatic affairs.  And then Super Mario World introduced a save system. Problem was it didn't reset your lives on powerdown (gba version at least), so eventually everything became a mad dash to the exit, coins and 1ups could be ignored. And flying powerups never need to be in a 2d mario again.
I still like smb1. Yoshi's Island is easy but provides a lot of incentives for general dicking around, favorite platformer ever.

I'm not sure if I've ever actually played SMW all the way through. I know I've never played all the secret levels. SMB3 was the one that made me cream my jeans, I didn't get that excited for Mario again until 64.

Same.

I like SMB1 more than SMB3 and SMW these days.  played SMB3 last summer for the first time since I was maybe 10 and fuck, do I think it's ridiculous. Shortttttt levels, and SMW...has too many levels and it's not that hard in the first place. Yoshi's Island ain't tough, but it is fucking fun throughout.

I loved playing 2 player with my sister back in the day. There was some trick you could use on the overworld that let you steal lives from the other player. I pissed her off soooooooo much doing that.  :lol

To be fair the reason New Super Mario Brothers will sell forever is because its so forgiving like some of the older games.  If I had to choose between suiting the difficulty preferences of seasoned gamers or outselling Smb3, well I like money.  The two things I would want from a hypothetical NSMB 2 is no item storage and lives reset to 3 upon powerdown.  Alot of nerds bitched about no flying powerups but I thought it was for the better.

NSMB2 needs more power ups, especially a flying one.  I think it would even be cool if they worked in the water jetpack from sunshine as that power up,

What I liked about the racoon tail was the slow descent controls. Flying over entire levels is game breaking.

1. If you don't want item storage, just don't take the dadgum items!
2. In this day and age, there's really no point in having a lives system, period.

What I liked about the racoon tail was the slow descent controls. Flying over entire levels is game breaking.

Why bother with platforming once I found a strip juuuust long enough to take off from? Even small flat areas could be exploited for a takeoff point if you press the buttons fast enough.

edit: and lives offer an incentive for not sucking. You lose your checkpoint.  They also encourage coin collecting which means you have to do more than reach the exit.

Although you are technically escorting baby Mario throughout the game, it's not really like an escort mission. In escort missions, you have to take care of an NPC, slowly escorting his or her slow, pathetic ass around a level, painstakingly protecting his sorry ass--making the gameplay a chore. This isn't the case in Yoshi's Island; baby Mario plays no part in the gameplay until your character, Yoshi, is hit. Losing Mario is the equivalent of losing health, or rings, or a power-up. He serves as a gameplay mechanic: a reason to avoid getting hit. Outside of that, he doesn't affect how Yoshi is controlled or how levels are attacked.

edit: What kind of nintendo fanboy doesn't like YI?

I am this guy.

SMW seems like a fully realized SMB3.  The concept is similar but the items are better, the secrets are a bit more challenging and rewarding, and the mid bosses were better.

Banjo is better than Mario 64 because it is larger, more difficult, and a darker title.  I just like it better.

Just for the record, Super Mario World is indeed better than Super Mario Bros 3, although a real 16 bit remake of the latter would be fucking awesome.

Yoshi's Island is better than both and the true best 'Mario' game, even though it's not a Mario game.  It is titled Super Mario World 2 here and that's good enough for me.

How about SMB3 is better then SMW

but

Banjo is better then Mario 64

If you think SMB3 is better than SMW, then saying Banjo is better than Mario 64 is acceptable.

All 4 games mentioned are great

I just recently played Banjo Kazooie on the 360 (the original mind you), and it's a surprisingly well made game, and the camera may even be slightly better than Mario 64's.

Why bother with platforming once I found a strip juuuust long enough to take off from? Even small flat areas could be exploited for a takeoff point if you press the buttons fast enough.

I'm trying to wrap my brain around this rationale, but it doesn't seem to be working. Hopefully you don't get an opportunity to go on any field trips to the Pentagon and see a giant red button that says "DO NOT PUSH".

I had a ton of fun with SMW when I was a kid, but there are lots of other Nintendo games (including a few Mario games) I prefer to it. I think I enjoyed SMB3, SM64, and SMG more. I didn't play Yoshi's Island till last year IIRC--I was old enough to appreciate its marvelous design but also at the age when video games in general are less fun. I think I stopped around the fifth world.

And since Banjo is being brought up, I thought it sucked and I still do.

OK, I rarely agree with EmCee and I don't really here either, but he has a point. Any move or skill that breaks the game makes it less enjoyable. In God Hand I figured out that I could dodge a stupid number of attacks with the drunken twist move and forward evade (rinse and repeat). When I was playing through the game on Hard Mode on a KMS run (no God powers) and was faced with a twentieth consecutive game over screen, it was tempting to fall back on spamming a ridiculously cheap--but still legitimate (i.e., not a glitch)--move. But at the same time, I feel guilty for doing it. What's fun about spamming the same combo over and over?

SMW never presents the same difficulty as God Hand so the temptation isn't really there, but it's still a little annoying just knowing it.

SMW is OK, Star Road secret levels and some of the castles are the best parts. Hard levels  :pimp

I liked Yoshi's Island more as a game, great imagination in this and very nice bosses. Also some of the extra levels were nice and hard. The transformation parts were a bit dumb though (car, digger, train :teehee and helicopter)

Japanese SMB2 (Lost Levels) is my fave 2D Mario game.
