i was getting 25-30 fps in fallout 3 on high settings, now i get between 35-45 and a lot of the microstuttering has stopped

COD:WaW was around 25, but i get a pretty consistent 40 now with drops in the huge set piece battles - it has also helped in mp quite a bit

Left 4 Dead still drops into the 20s during swarms :( but the less-populated areas jumped by about 10fps

i was pretty shocked, tbh - none of the other driver updates i'd installed had an effect this drastic

keep in mind that i am playing at 1360x768 on my HDTV, though

What are the chances I'd see much difference with a 7600GT?

I wonder if this will help with Mirror's Edge?  I get 60 fps on every other game (outside of Crysis), but Mirror's Edge with PhysX enabled results in drops here and there (nothing serious, but I would like a perfect framerate).  With PhysX disabled it's a solid 60, but I love those physics.  Anyone tried it out to see if there was much of a difference?

So, do you think they solved some long-standing idiot bug in their divers?

Speaking of silliness in code, I've got a friend who is making this terrible front-end for some emulators. Basically it scans two directories for ROMs, lists the ROMs in the directories, and then you can choose what you want to play.

Well, he's got the list of filenames in an array. Problem is, he obviously doesn't know how big to make the array before it pulls in the list of file names, so he basically does Directory.GetFiles() to return an array of the files in the directory. From there, he has a for loop hat goes through each element in the file array and increments a counter. He then resizes his array to the counter after it's done counting 1,000 or whatever roms, and then goes back and populates his array with another for loop.

His code made me feel dirty. So dirty.

How big are the drops?  If the drops are drastic, then you might need to uninstall PhysX and reinstall it again.  On the old setup, I had problems with PHYSX scenes dropping down to less than 20FPS.  They were gone once I reinstalled Physx.

If that doesn't solve the slowdown, then you probably need another GPU as a dedicated PhysX processor.  Having a dedicated PhysX processor improves performance quite a bit.  That's why, even with 4 GPUS, I got another GPU just for PhysX.  With the current setup, the framerate never drops below 60 in Mirror's Edge with maximum settings in 1920x1200, 16x AA, 16x AF.

I'm pretty sure it's a Vista drivers problem.  I noticed some drops to like 40 FPS on my current setup so I knew it couldn't be a hardware issue.

I switched to XP and all the framedrops were completely eliminated.

COD4 and COD:WAW also perform better in XP.  Even in Vista, they run at well over 60fps so I don't bother switching over to XP for them.  However, if you're only getting about 30-40 fps in COD:WAW, it's worth checking it out on XP to see if you'll get an extra 10-15 fps.  More importantly, there'll be less slowdown.  On my old setup, COD4 will have pretty big framedrops whenever there is a lot of smoke but that only happened in Vista.

Just minor drops (mid 40s).  Nothing serious.  Most people probably wouldn't be bothered by it, but it does annoy me a bit.

The new Nvidia drivers are awesome. I decide to load up Crysis again and with everything set at high, a few things set at very high, 1680X1050 resolution, and 2X AA I'm getting 30fps are better in most situations.

Every day that goes by I keep regretting that I got a 4870. It's a decent card but ATI's drivers are ass as they've always been. NVidia provides so many updates and constant tweaks with ForceWare that it's frankly embarassing when you're stuck with Catalyst in comparison.

I'll never buy an ATI card again.

Isn't the GT120 a freaking Geforce 9500? I'm pretty sure you can run some stuff with that.

I don't have a clue about the cards and what they can do. I'm not really a PC gamer. I can run Deus Ex in max and Peggle with it though.

You should be able to run pretty much anything just fine with a GT 120, unless there's a bottleneck somewhere with a slow processor or only a gig of ram.
